Julian Edelman faces four-game suspension to start next season

According to multiple outlets, the Patriots receiver, who is returning from a torn ACL he suffered last season, violated the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. He is appealing the suspension.

I would think that drugs used under the guise of ACL internal medicine would suffice.

Substance suspended Patriots WR Julian Edelman used has 'scientists analyzing it'

Julian Edelman was suspended four games, according to reports, for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing substances, but the substance he used isn't one that you typically see.

Edelman, who essentially confirmed the suspension by releasing a statement on it, said he didn't "know what happened." The NFL apparently feels the same way, at least according to a report from MMQB's Albert Breer.

    From Breer:

"I know what Julian Edelman posted on Instagram in the wake of the suspension news (“I don’t know what happened”) came off as a little weird, but there is an explanation for it. I was told Edelman’s result was triggered by a substance that wasn’t immediately recognizable, and there are scientists analyzing it. And as to the timing, the test did happen during the offseason (a couple months ago), which means it’s not for any kind of stimulant. You might remember the rash of players saying they got popped for Adderall—the rules have changed now so that offseason use of stimulants falls under the substances of abuse policy, rather than the PED policy."

The Patriots WR has reportedly appealed the decision, and there has not been a verdict yet.

In his full statement, Edelman said: "I am very sorry -- I don't know what happened. I've taken many, many tests obviously over the course of my career, and nothing like this has ever happened. I apologize to the Kraft family, my coaches, teammates and fans. As this matter is being appealed, I can't say anymore but no matter what, I will be ready to play and pursue another championship with our team and for Patriots fans around the world."

If the suspension stands, Edelman will miss the first four games of the 2018 season against the Texans, Jaguars, Lions and Dolphins. But, as Sporting News' Vinnie Iyer said, the suspension shouldn't hurt New England too much.

"There's no shortage of bodies at wideout as the team extended its flyer on Kenny Britt and held on to Phillip Dorsett," Iyer writes. "Both were necessary because of the uncertanty tied to the knee injury of Malcolm Mitchell. And although the Patriots traded for Cordarrelle Patterson primarily to replace Lewis in the return game, he still can provide offensive pop when needed."

Edelman missed all of last season after tearing his ACL in the preseason. The season before, he led the team in receptions (98), targets (158) and receiving yards (1,106).
