Copa America (soccer)

I hope you don't mind me posting my views and recommendations in your thread. Just thought it was better to keep all views in one tidy package than spread out all over the forum. If you wish to have this thread all to yourself let me know and I will start my own. In the mean time I have quite a bit to post and will spread it over four messages.

The eyes of the football World switch their attention this week from Portugal to Peru who host this years Copa America. The South American showpiece kicks off this Tuesday (6th July) with the final taking place on the 25th July. The competiton starts out with three groups conprising of four teams with the top two going through to the later stages along with the best two third placed teams.

As expected Brazil and Argentina head the outright betting markets. The Samba boys have won the Copa America six times since its inception and are of course the reigning world champions. Argentina, although not being the same formiddable team that graced the world stage in the 80's still command alot of respect. Both countries are priced at 3/1 (+300) favourites to lift the silver trophy.

A word of warning to those that wish to wager on tne boys from Brazil. They will not be at full strength. Their coach Alberto Parreira has taken the view to rest many of their stars, Carlos, Ronalado, Ronaldinho, Gilberto and Kaka will all miss the tournament. Parreira recently quoted "the competition is too much for Brazil’s schedule and they need a break before playing Bolivia in their next qualification for World Cup Germany in 2006".

Brazil pin their Copa America hopes on youngsters Adriano, Diego and Renato. They should progress from their group containing Chile, Costa Rica and Paraguay. However, they do not have the depth or quality to go all the way and 3/1 about a young side without many of it's stars does not warrant support to be the winner of the competition.

Argentina have a record in this competition second to none, registering 14 tournament victories. They missed out last time in Columbia because of safety precautions. Clearly the Argentineans record in the Copa America has to be respected, but doubts remain. The boys in Blue and White have failed to win a major trophy since 1993, they continually have to perform beyond realistic expections from their Countries expections. Their form lately has been anything but solid. Their last two qualifying games for the World Cup in Germany 2006 have seen them lose 3-1 to Brazil and draw at home 0-0 to Paraguay. These results are on the back of some other poor performances since their lack lusture performance in the last World Cup in 2002. Like Brazil, Argentina have to make do with the loss of some key players. Crespo (top scorer), Aimar, Samuel and Riquelme are all taking an extended holiday. At 3/1, Argentina like Brazil have something to prove before I could recommend an outright wager. I am not saying Argentina cannot win the tournament and they do have a point to prove, but a waiting brief is advisable to see how they perform in the group stages.

Host nation Peru, tournament winners twice, appear to have a good chance to win the tournament at 6/1 (+600). History has shown that Home advantage has proved a key factor in this tournament with the host's winning 21 of the 41 tournaments held. In Peru's favour is clearly the ability to play at high altitude and spured on by their fanatical home fans. They have a settled squad which is huge in a competition of this nature. One player I am looking forward to seeing is striker Jefferson Farfan who has been a prolific goalscorer at club level. Peru come into this tournament off some solid results in their World Cup qualifiers. Wins over both Uruguay and Paraguay and a draw against a full strength Brazil.

One of the dark horses for success is The Concacaf Gold Cup winners Mexico. Their recent exploits in the Copa America has been good. Runners-up twice and finishing third on two occassions. Their world Cup qualifing games have yet to get underway, however, any side that is ranked 4th in FIFA's South American rankings must clearly be respected and the Mexicans have enough talent to possibly win their first Copas.

Recommendations:

PERU @ 6/1 x 1.5 points

MEXICO @ 10/1 x 1 point

Group Recommendations

GROUP A

Only two teams are in contention of winning this group, Peru and Colombia. The tournament hosts (Peru) are 11/8 (+137), the defending champions (Columbia) are 15/8 (+187).

PERU: Home advantage has proved a key factor in this tournament down the years with the host nation winning 21 of the 41 contests. Ideally suited to high altitude levels and boasting a settled side that have the quality to make an impact. Opening game against Bolivia should see a comfortable win and provide the platform to come out on top of Group A

COLUMBIA: It would be a major surprise if the Copa America holders can repeat their feat from 2001. They have not been at their best in the World Cup qualification games. The Columbians recent 5-0 beating of Uruguay says more about the current state of Uruguayan football than it does of the quality of Columbia. Qualification is possibility but not as group winners.

VENEZUELA and BOLIVIA: A lack of goals and an average defence makes live difficult for Venezuela. Bolivia are currently in bottom place in the South American World Cup qualification table. These two countries will be fighting it out to finish third and a possible shot at the last eight.

Recommendation:

Home advantage and a settled team make PERU the sensible option to win Group A.

PERU @ 11/8 (+137) x 2 points

GROUP C

According to the books prices for this group, this is all about one team, Brazil. The current World champions are 8/13 (-162) to top their group with Paraguay, Chile and Costa Rica given little chance.

BRAZIL: With coach Alberto Parreira taking the decision to rest the majority of their World Cup stars, taking such a short price on these propostitions leads only to the poor house in the long term. Brazils price is on the back of past results and pedigree when fielding a full strength side.

PARAQUAY: Draws against a full strength Brazil and Argentina see's Paraguay moving forward in World football. The 0-0 draw in Argentina was a great result as they played the last third of the game with ten players. 9/2 (+450) to win the group looks tempting and make no mistake, there is enough talent in this squad to qualify for the latter stages and a good opportunity to qualify as group winners.

CHILE: A settled side who also boasts recent draws with Brazil and Argentina. Recent run of form entitles them to challenge the likes of Brazil and Paraquay for qualification and at 7/1 (+700) to win Group C, Chile looks worth a saver.

COSTA RICA: The outsiders for the group with an unsettled team and new manager is likely to see an early exit from the tournament.

Recommendation:

With doubts surrounding Brazil, the opportunity is there to try and capitalise with wagers on Paraguay and Chile.

PARAQUAY @ 9/2 (+450) x 1 point

CHILE @ 7/1 (+700) x 0.5 points

Columbia vs. Venezuela (Group A)

The opening game of the Copa America tournament starts Tuesday and see's Columbia meet Venezuela. Columbia are the present holders of the Copas and are odds-on to start their defence of the trophy with a win over Venezuela.

Venezuela have the worst record of any South American team in Copa America history. Their performances in the tournament show one win, six draws and a whopping 35 losses. Clearly these results would have everyone clambering to back Columbia in this one, however, I can tell you that over the last few years the standard of football in Venezuela has hit new heights and this present squad are without doubt the best this nation has ever assembled together. Three wins, a draw, and three losses see Venezuela in sixth spot in the World Cup qualifying group. It's worth pointing out that one of those three wins was a 1-0 victory in Columbia last November.

Columbia is currently re-building their squad after winning the Copa America four years ago as the tournament hosts. Columbia come into the Copas off a 5-0 win over Uruguay but before this result, their performances have been less than useful.

Recommendation:

Columbia vs. Venezuela ..... Venezuela (+0.5) asian handicap @ 1.85 (-117) x 1.5 points

Peru vs. Bolivia (Group A)

KsYas, I notice you are from Mexico and I wish your country all the best both in the Copas and the World Cup qualifiers. I don't rate argentina has highly as some South Americans and the sports books. I may be proved wrong (it won't be the first time), but to me they appear under strength with the loss of several key players that are not easily replaced. Anyway lets move onto my next post.

Peru in the land of Incas hope to start their campaign off with an empathetic win over Bolivia on Tuesday. Hopes are high of overall success with Brazil under strength and Argentina missing several key players and scratching around for some form.

Bolivia find themselves in a difficult situation. Their World Cup qualifying chances have all but dissappeared. Coach Blackutt has had a falling out with Baldivieso and they come into the Copas with a number of key injuries to Ribeiro, Sanchez and Pena. Bolivia won't be concerned about the altitude in Peru as they play their football at high altitude in La Paz. What will concern Bolivia is their recent form losing five of their recent World Cup qualifing games. Peru have held Brazil to a 1-1 draw and beaten Uruguary leading into the Copas.

I don't think it will be to difficult for Autuoti and his Peruvian team to achieve that opening win. Peru are at full strength and have enough quality to comfortably beat Bolivia who are rooted to the bottom of the South American World Cup qualification table. I look for Pizzaro (Bayern Munich) and Farfan (PSV Eindhoven) to cause Bolivia plenty of trouble in around the 18 yard box.

I know 8/15 (-185) for Peru to win is short and will not get us rich, however, it does give us an opportunity for a winning start and add money to the betting account.

Recommendation:

Peru to beat Bolivia @ 8/15 (-185) x 2 points

Peru to be winning at HT/FT @ 13/10 x 1 point.
