I will be moving to Irving at the end of the month. From what I hear, I need to get my car inspected before I can get plates and a DL. What exactly, if you know, does a car need to have to pass inspection?

Not too much, you should be fine as long as your car isn't billowing smoke when it is running.

It's the new emissions laws that made car inspections double from 20 something to almost 50 bucks. Doughboy is right. As long as your car is not kicking out smoke signals, you should be ok. Best of luck to you and welcome to TX...

the inspection is nothing like the folks above stated, but one thing to consider is you will have to pay sales tax (6.25%) on the vechicle when you try to get your sticker. I had a truck and got hit with about 1K in taxes when it came time to register, which I was not prepared for. I cannot remember all of the details, but I do remember that one here is a link for http://www.tax.co.harris.tx.us/ harris county (Houston) I assume it the same in the DFW metroplex.

The new emissions laws DID increase your cost, almost doubling it. Get your chit straight man before you say something...Best of luck.

Relax man, I forgot to put a comma I should have said "the inspection is nothing, like the folks above stated" Nothing meaning no big deal etc. I can see how it would be read the wrong way. But since you did bring a vech. from out of state you had to pay sales tax right? I was bringing that up because when I got my plates for an out of state vech. it was the most expensive part.

lmao....i see lots of junkers driving around in this town with smoke billowing out from them and the way some of them look....they have been smoking for a couple years...

not too hard to pass inspection....after all, YOU pay the inspector..and he may want to inspect your car again next year

Do you know how they determine the cost that the tax is based on? It's only a 92 Lumina, so it's not like it's a high-priced car, but I was curious if they use purchase price or blue book or what?

No harm, no foul man...And as far as what your TTL will run, it all depends on it's worth on the title of your car. I know it's changed, but if my memory serves correctly, it depends on the amount on your title. I had bought my car in Missouri from a friend but when he signed it over to me, I had asked him to write down the price of $1.00, so I wouldn't have to pay such a hefty tax. Anyway, best of luck moving to Texas...the only state where you can wear a pair of shorts and a coat in the same day. You'll see what I mean when you get here. The people down here are really nice and down to earth.

If your car tags and registration are current in your home State, you will not have to pay sales tax in Texas, you have already paid it in your home State. You will have to pay for title transfer, registration and Texas plates $50.00 to $75.00 MAX. DFW may have emmissions testing and if your '92 has the original cat. converter you may be in trouble passing the emmissions test. Check with the Texas Department of Public Safety, in the county you are moving to, before you move, you'll get the whole story from them. If a female operator answers, be courteous and say "Howdy Ma'am! Gettin' ready to ride the trail, cross the Red River, settle in your Great State in a little house on the prairie. Can ya hep me gettin' my 'ol hoss branded!"
