Giants ace Lincecum cited for marijuana possession
Giants ace Lincecum cited for marijuana possession
By GREGG BELL, AP Sports Writer
Friday, November 6, 2009 at 9:46 a.m.
SEATTLE — San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum is facing misdemeanor marijuana charges following a traffic stop in his home state. Washington State Patrol spokesman Steve Schatzel said Thursday that the 2008 Cy Young Award winner and former University of Washington star was pulled over for speeding on Interstate 5 in the town of Hazel Dell, about four miles north of the Oregon border, on Oct. 30.
An officer approached Lincecum's 2006 Mercedes and smelled marijuana as the pitcher rolled down his window. Schatzel said Lincecum immediately complied with a request to hand over the drug and a marijuana pipe from the car's center console.
The amount measured was 3.3 grams. Schatzel said police consider that a small amount for personal use, well below the maximum of 40 grams before possession is classified differently and carries a more severe penalty.
The incident was first reported by The Columbian in Vancouver, Wash.
"It's not really out of the ordinary. It happens every day," Schatzel said of the volume of marijuana Lincecum handed over. "It was about the size of a thumb, the whole thumb."
Lincecum could face potential fines totaling $622 for the misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia counts plus the citation for driving 74 mph in a 60 mph zone, Schatzel said.
The 25-year-old All-Star starter entered a plea of not guilty through his attorney on Monday, according to records in Clark County District Court. A hearing that had been scheduled for Friday morning was canceled, pending a pretrial conference between Lincecum's attorney and a county prosecutor on Nov. 23.
Lincecum is currently scheduled to appear before a judge on Dec. 22.
The Giants said they were aware of the situation but did not immediately have a comment.
The native of the Seattle suburb of Bellevue went 15-7 with a 2.48 ERA in 32 starts and 225 1-3 innings in 2009, his third season in the major leagues. He is 40-17 with a 2.90 ERA in his career, and could be getting a multimillion-dollar raise from salary arbitration this offseason.
Teammates consider the smallish right-hander a quirky perfectionist. They also consider him the "Franchise," the nickname they gave him when he broke into the big leagues only a year out of college. Others see his boyish face, shaggy dark hair, his diminutive frame – and his dominance – and call him "The Freak."
San Francisco chose him 10th overall in the 2006 draft out of Washington, and he instantly became the organization's top pitching prospect since Hall of Famer Juan Marichal signed with the New York Giants as an amateur free agent in 1957.

What is it with these athletes??????? Isn't having the God given talet to play a kids game for a living and get paid WELL enough, my mistake obviously not! I know it's such a small amount, but even if you don't want to be put on the athlete pedestal and be looked at as a role model YOU ARE !
You make enough money HIRE a damn car service or put a friend to work as your driver to remind you to use a fan or open the wiindow. Sorry for the rant I just don't understand.

They are human, people normally do not change drastically just because they have more money or fame. Lifestyles typically do not change until you have kids, get hitched etc. Bottom line is when I was under 25 I did a ton of stupid shit and if I had money i would have done even more!

The ONLY thing I don't like about it is the kids who look up to him...other than that give the guy a frigg'n break. I'm sure many, many pro athletes smoke the pipe. Him and Wilson probably smoke after every game....I heard on the radio that weed isn't even on the MLB drug policy. Just roids. I could of heard wrong. If MLB tested for pot on a regular basis the fines/suspensions would be outrageous.

imagine if the NBA tested for pot there would not even be a league
Lincecum is an idiot, because he is going to salary arbitration this year and a huge jump in pay, hopefully they hold it against him.

I don't think he's an idiot....just got his hand caught in the cookie jar. Not one person on this planet is perfect and DO make dumb decisions whether you admit or not. He just got caught....he'll be fine, but this will be on his resume now. Michael Phelps got bashed for a couple weeks then it blew over. Same thing here...He's still a stud no matter which way you slice it.

Pot
My point is that there is a persona that professional athletes are stuck with. I don't think anyone is asking to much of them to stay out of trouble while playing ball. I wish they would legalize good old mary jane but until they do...try not to get busted.

hummmm..lets see ..fire up the one hitter and approach 75 mph in a 60 mph zone..
DUMB ASS...
when you are hired by a major corporation you are expected to conduct yourself in certain ways..this means accountability and responsibility for ones actions..
the monies paid are for performance and representation of your talents along with that comes an obligation to conduct yourself in a professional manner..
Thus the term..
Professional Athlete
the dumb-ass isn't working at Joe's Sub Shop..
should be though..
$100.00 a day buys ones of his old flunkie stoner buddies everyday and twice on Sunday..
these guys have corporate and personal lawyers drilling into their dense heads all the time about the importance of their conduct on and off the field..It all equates to more $$$$$$ down the road..
now he can do the woe is me and please forgive my slip-up..
F...U...BRIGHTEN UP
