Rules Thread

Hello everyone and welcome to the 2011-2012 Hippo-Phart NFL Contest. Listed below are the rules for this year's contest.

Entry Fee
The entry fee for this year's contest will be $25. All entry fees must be received by me no later than Thursday, September 8th in order to be eligible to play. To get my Email address for ways to send the entry fee, please contact Madjack and he will supply my Email address to you.

The Rules:
The 2011-2012 Hippo-Phart Contest has very simple rules. Each Wednesday, a thread containing the lines and totals for the upcoming weekend's NFL games will be posted.

Contestants will select their 3 plays from that list. However, the "Finster Rule" applies. You can't play both sides or both totals of the same game. This means.....if the Vikings are playing the Saints in Week #1, you aren't allowed to pick both the Saints and the Vikings as two of your picks. Sounds pretty basic, but apparently, you can't put shenanigans past everyone.

You also have the option of making one of your selections worth double. This must be made clear in your post by putting a (2x) beside that play. Please make sure this is done. If forced to "guess" as to the intent of the selection, then all plays for that week will be graded as (1x).

Your selections for the week must be posted before the top of the hour prior to the kickoff of the first game. In other words, if the first game has a kickoff time of 1:10pm on Sunday, then your plays must have a timestamp of 1:00pm or earlier. If your post has a timestamp of 1:01pm, you will be graded with 3 losses for that week. Also, all plays must be listed in the same post. No editing to posts is allowed whatsoever. If a play is edited, that player will receive a -3 for the week.

Also, just to be clear....if you plan on playing all 4pm games for a certain Sunday, your selections need to be posted no later than 1pm.

Scoring
Scoring is simple. For the regular season, all games are worth 1 point. Each player selects 3 games and has the option to make one of those games worth 2x. A winning selection scores a +1 and a losing selection scores a -1. There will be no pushes this year. Half points will be on all lines posted.

The maximum score for a regular season week is +4 and conversely, a worst score for a week will be -4. And if you forget to post, are too late with your post, or edit your post...you will automatically receive -3 for the week.

Playoff scoring is slightly different. Please read the following carefully:

In the wildcard round, players will select 3 plays. Each play is worth 2 points with the option of selecting one of the plays to be worth 3 points. So the max score for the week is +7.

In the divisional round, the rules are exactly the same as the wildcard round. Max score for the week is +7.

In the Conference Finals, players will select 2 plays. These plays are worth 3 points each with the option of making one of the plays worth 5 points. Max score for the week is +8.

For the Super Bowl, players will select 1 play. This play can be worth either 5 pts or 8 pts. The player will clearly denote this in their post. Also, in order to be eligible for prize money, YOU MUST POST A PLAY FOR THE SUPER BOWL OR YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

Scoring Summary

Reg. Season - 3 plays - 1 pt each - one play can be worth 2 pt - no post = -3
Wild Card Rd - 3 plays - 2 pt each - one play can be worth 3 pt - no post = -6
Divisional Rd - 3 plays - 2 pt each - one play can be worth 3 pt - no post = -6
Conf Final - 2 plays - 3 pt each - one play can be worth 5 pt - no post = -6
Super Bowl - 1 play - 5 pt or 8 pt - no post = DQ

Scorekeeping
I will handle all scorekeeping this year. I will try to have the scores for the week posted no later than Tuesday.

Prizes
Prize amounts will be determined by the number of participants. There will be 3 people who win money. Those people are: The champion, the runner-up, and last place. The runner-up will win $50. The person who comes in last will also win $50. The champion will win the remainder of the pot.

The winners will need to coordinate with me to receive their winnings. This will be handled in a VERY timely manner.

Extra Rules
To be eligible for the last place prize, you must never receive an automatic -3 during the regular season.

If a player misses a total of 3 weeks during the season (or post-season), they will be removed from the scoring list...thus being ejected from the contest (no refund of your entry fee).

How to Sign Up
A sign-up thread has been posted. Please post in that thread, signifiying your interest in the contest. Your name will be added to the list. Once your entry fee is received, your name will become green, indicating that you are officially entered in the contest.

Again, your $25 entry fee needs to be in my hand by Thursday, September 8th before the season opener.

If there are any questions, please let me know. I'm trying to be as thorough as possible so there are no lingering questions.

And how could I forget this......in the 2011-2012 Hippo-Phart Contest, shit-talking and provocation of your fellow opponents is greatly ENCOURAGED! Have fun fuckers!

Remember....

No editing posts.

Have your picks in before 1pm on Sunday. (If you are playing a Thursday game, all of your picks for the week need to be included in 1 post prior to kickoff of the Thursday night game)

You cannot win the last place prize if you miss a week.

Even if you are selecting all 4pm games on Sunday, you need to submit your plays before 1pm!

Any time stamp of 1:01pm or later on Sunday is counted as a missed week and will result in a -3 score for the week

Never understood why 'MadJack's Biggest Loser' should be rewarded for their ineptness. Isn't repeated "shit-talk" more appropriate and deserving?? Give that extra $50 to the true winner and throw in a 'free entry' for the following year to the bottom dweller. They should also have to show proof of the required reading of "How to Succeed in the NFL," co-authored by Hammer/The Boys before their re-entry.

Having the last place prize helps to keep everyone involved. It's also been a rule since this contest's inception. Maybe next year I'll revisit the "last place" rule.

Not a bad suggestion with the free entry for the next year's contest. This contest will never die

Probably too late to change things this year--and I guess a vote would probably be in order anyway--but I'd like to see separate prizes for the regular season and the playoffs. The scores could roll over even (so the regular season winner still had an advantage going in, and a better shot at the whole pot)... I just think, as it stands, the playoffs, especially the final couple rounds, are too heavily weighted. A Super Bowl win or loss is potentially worth 2 perfect regular season weeks. There are also less games to pick from, so luck becomes a bigger factor since you're forced to make picks you might not love. Just my 2 cents though. Thoughts?

Here are some rule changes I would suggest:

1. You can only participate in the overall contest if you have some sort of side-bet w/ another participant. It could be for who get's their picks in first. Just something.
2. You can make any picks as long as it is before kick-off.
3. There is a prize not only for first and last, but for anyone (including ties) that finishes w/ net 0 for the year.
4. A turkey hat-trick bonus. If you go 3-0 three straight weeks, you get an extra 3 points.
