Sisters try to sell Illinois-shaped corn flake online, eBay cancels auction

March 19, 2008

FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Two sisters from Virginia who are selling a corn flake shaped like the state of Illinois on eBay say the online auction Web site canceled their listing.

But the flake is back. The sisters say the Land of Lincoln twin is still available after all.

''Something really dramatic just happened with our corn flake,'' Melissa McIntire, 23, of Chesapeake, Va., said Tuesday night, explaining that the sisters received an e-mail from eBay saying the state-shaped cereal was in violation of the site's food policy.

''We're not exactly sure how we're in violation of it,'' McIntire said. ''We don't want to violate any policies.''

McIntire said they received a standard notice from eBay after hearing from auction-watchers that the famous flake was no longer online.

The listing ''was removed because it violated the eBay Food policy. We notified members who placed bids on the item that the listing has been canceled,'' the eBay e-mail read.

A telephone message left with San Jose, Calif.-based eBay Inc. after business hours on Tuesday was not immediately returned.

Emily McIntire, 15, a sophomore in high school, pulled the cereal from a box of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes on her way to school. The sisters listed ''The Great Illinois Corn Flake'' eBay auction on Sunday, saying they hoped to create family memories and maybe earn enough money to buy more Frosted Flakes.

But the corn flake drew much attention and had dozens of bids, some at nearly $1 million, which the McIntires deemed fraudulent. They were forced to cancel some bids and narrow the number they could accept.

Then copycat items started popping up on eBay, including corn flakes shaped like Hawaii and Virginia. There's also a potato chip shaped like Florida and Illinois corn flake paraphernalia like T-shirts and buttons.

The McIntire sisters said they've relisted the flake on eBay, but this time they're auctioning a coupon redeemable for their corn flake, instead of the cereal itself. Bidding is set to start at $102.50. The family says they'd like to use the money for a trip to Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

Bidding on the 2-inch-by-1 3/8-inch flake was to end on Thursday.
