    Silly question

I feel almost stupid for asking this question
but as a newcomer to betting on americian sports just wondering if say for instance the price for a team is -105 what return would you get for say a $100 dollar wager. If anyone could shed somelight it would be much appreciated(just wont to see if i am getting roughly the same prices with Centrebet)

With a line of -105, you would have to lay 105 dollars to win 100. If the line was the reverse, say +105, then you would lay 100 dollars to win 105.
    Hope this helps.......

    Gloveski,

Certainly not a stupid question to ask when you are not used to American odds.

    -105 = $1.95 (100/105) or must bet $105 to win $100
    -110 = $1.91 (100/110) or must bet $110 to win $100
    -120 = $1.83 (100/120) or must bet $120 to win $100

    +110 = $2.10 (110/100) or must bet $100 to win $110
    +150 = $2.50 (150/100) or must bet $100 to win $150

There may be a better way to explain this but I hope this helps.

You won't be getting roughly the same prices with Centrebet Almost never worth betting on anything American there. Your standard US price is -110, which is 1.9091... etc

Centrebet gives you 1.90, so no need to use them for anything American, barring a half point or something you need (which can happen) or the odd better hockey price.

    -105 is 1.952 something

Canbet, of course, will give you -107 on lots of stuff, which 1.934 or so

as Cartman says, the simple way to think about it is a division, ignoring the negative side, so -105 is 100/105 or 1/1.05 depending on how you like to think about it, and, of course, add 100 or 1 to get your decimal price, depending.

NZ TAB worst of all - -115 or $1.85 is their return for spread bets - 15% juice
They claim it's due to laws ensuring they have to pay a percentage of both profit and turnover to the sport gambled on and because they have much higher overheads than most other books (ie retail outlets). Hmmmm...

Not a stupid question Gloveski; it's only thru playing lots of baseball lately that I've worked it out. Redsfann tried to explain it to me too but the guy was too out of it for me to comprehend more than a few slurred ramblings about Gorbachev and his Huey Lewis Greatest Hits CD

    Well, that's about -117 Anders

    but it isn't 15% A bit over 8.

Well, taxes are certainly one reason, but having retail outlets and a monopoly, isn't, particularly if doing parimutuel racing betting there?

    You're not even trying.

How's this -- when i started betting 2 1/2 years ago i rang a bookmaker to ask them "do you get the dollar you bet back, on top of the odds?" I was thinking $1.85 might have really been $2.85. Thought i was on to a bit of a money spinner (how do i make that embarrassed smiley?) (that's better, ta)

Fred - LMFAO! I'm sure everyone has a Gambling 101 question like that - I know I did
For the faces, see the wee line on the left of the box you're typing in that says "Smilies Legend" - has all the instructions there. I love the little bastards...

Finally an old thread worth "bumping".........

Oh and for the record "Vegas/American Style Odds" is the dumbest form of odds out of all the options. Decimal odds are not only easiest to understand, but the most accurate.

I have never used "Vegas/American Style Odds" and I never will.

Decimal odds are what the rest of the world uses, as usual America gets it wrong, ya know like miles and acres and shit

And I miss Anders and Cartman88, they were high quality Madjackers.......not like these dicks THE_THONG and
    JOSHNAUDI
