I have a childhood friend that was raised in foster homes and had a pretty rough life. While most of us went off to college he didn't and ended up working odd jobs here and there. He had a tendancy to be pretty violent and ended up doing something bad to someone and it had to do with drugs. He ended up going to prison for it. He was 20 at the time. I saw him 4 years later when he just got out and he was a totally different dude. A friend of mine from college was with me and came walking up, my friend was bald so he shaved his head, and my old high school friend immediately said "Aryan Brother?" We all were like what the hell and then my old friend realized he wasn't so he didn't say anything else. Later in the night we got to talking and he told me about how rough it was in prison. His 3rd day there he was walking around and some black guys approached him(sorry to any black guys not meant towards you but it's how it is in prison) but they told him that he was going to give them his cigs every week. He told them no so they kicked his ass and raped him. He got out two weeks later and the same thing happend. The guys came up to him and said the same thing. His reply was the same and this time they broke his job and did some other things. After he finally got out of the infirmary the first people to approach him were the Aryan Brotherhood. They told him that they liked the way he stood up for himself and they would take care of him from now on. Not once from that point on did anyone mess with him. So when he got out he was full Aryan at that point. The kid I knew from high school was gone and he was totally different. He was the kind of guy that you just hoped nobody looked at wrong because he would react and it was never good.

Move to the present. He was busted in the spring in a big bust here in DFW and West Texas area for Meth distribution along with several Aryan Brothers. He's now in prison for a longggg time. I've always felt bad for him because he didn't have the life I had and really didn't have a chance. He was in two foster homes while I knew him and was beaten by one of his foster dads. By the time he was a senior in high school he was living on his own just trying to make it thru life. I know it's bad but I really believe the Aryan Brotherhood was the first and only family he really felt like cared about him. Because of that he was willing to and did everything for them.

Thanks for sharing L-Wood

Sorry your friend has had such a rough go. I've always been on the side of nurture in the Nature v Nurture debate and this seems to be another case of the environment molding the man. I can't fault your friend for joining the gang because his options for survival were severely limited. There is no doubt that he felt a brotherhood like most of us did on a football or baseball team, except these guys kept him alive.

There are many movies that show people over coming great odds to make the life that they dream of, but in reality, those are miracles and the majority end up walking a similar path as your friend.
