Air Force coach Troy Calhoun gave no clearer picture Sunday evening about the status of injured starting quarterback Tim Jefferson.
But Calhoun did say that if Jefferson is unable to play this coming weekend against San Diego State, sophomore Connor Dietz would start at quarterback for the Falcons and sophomore Asher Clark, who competed for the quarterback job before the season, would remain at tailback.
Jefferson sprained his right ankle on Air Force?s second offensive possession of its 37-13 victory over New Mexico on Saturday. He left the game, did not return and had a protective boot on his right foot when he left University Stadium.
?It could be a few days, it could be a few weeks,? Calhoun said of when Jefferson, last season?s Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, might return. ?It?s one of those where I think it?s a pain threshold.?
If Dietz, who was solid in relief of Jefferson, makes his first career start, Air Force likely would call for more triple-option plays.
?He does a really good job running the option part,? Calhoun said of Dietz. ?He?s got good quickness, and he?s real distinct and instant with the decision making.?
Calhoun agreed there were times Saturday that Dietz and Clark, his pitch-man, were too close together on option plays. But he said that might have had something to do with how quickly Dietz moves after pulling the ball away from the fullback. He said Dietz and Clark would have to improve that by ?working together more.?
