After testing market, Domi agrees to three-year deal

TORONTO -- Enforcer Tie Domi agreed to terms of a three-year contract Friday to remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The 32-year-old Domi, who became an unrestricted free agent July 1, received offers from at least four NHL teams before deciding to re-sign with the Maple Leafs.

Last season, Domi became Toronto's career leader in penalty minutes with 1,777. His 3,027 penalty minutes rank ninth on the NHL's career list.

"Tie has been an integral part of our team mosaic for eight years. We fully intended to re-sign him,'' Leafs executive Bill Watters said.

"It was a matter of him testing the free-agent market for the first time and making up his mind. I know there were three other teams that wanted to sign him.''

Watters declined to reveal financial details, but said the deal was worth less than $2 million per seasons.

Domi's agent Pat Morris said the total value of the deal was "between $5.5 million and $6 million.''

Dallas, Anaheim, Chicago and Toronto made the most serious offers to Domi.

"There were benefits of playing in each of those cities,'' Morris said. "But in the end, his loyalty to the Toronto organization and his desire to stay here outweighed those options.

"He's relieved. It was a long, very interesting process, and one that was done methodically to allow him to see other opportunities.''

Domi had nine goals, 10 assists and 157 penalty minutes with the Leafs last season. He has 77 goals and 103 assists in his career.
