(Reuters) - A fan fell to his death at Rangers Ballpark on Thursday after catching a ball tossed by one of the Texas players.

The man was reaching for a ball thrown by Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton during the second inning and toppled over a railing after making the catch.

He fell some 20 feet (6 meters) from the outfield seats to a paved area behind a scoreboard during the Rangers? 6-0 win over the Oakland A?s.

?We are deeply saddened that the man who fell has passed away as a result of this tragic accident,? Rangers President Nolan Ryan said in a statement on the Rangers website.

?Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.?

Replays on Oakland?s television broadcast show the man reaching for the ball and apparently catching it before falling.

The visitor?s bullpen at the stadium is in left-center field. Athletics reliever Brad Ziegler(notes) was in tears after the game when he found out the man had died.

?They had him on a stretcher. He said, ?Please check on my son. My son was up there by himself.? The people who carried him out reassured him. ?Sir, we?ll get your son, we?ll make sure he?s OK,?? Ziegler said. ?He had his arms swinging. He talked and was conscious. We assumed he was okay. But when you find out he?s not, it?s just tough.?

There was an audible gasp in the stands when the man tumbled over the rail, eerily similar to an accident last July when a man fell about 30 feet from the second-deck of seats down the right-field line while trying to catch a foul ball.

This is just horrible.
The little boy watching his father fall to his death. I feel for that child.

Just imagine the call to his wife. How can anyone expect that call?

Thoughts and prayers with the family.

Nolan Ryan said that Josh Hamilton is taking this pretty hard. Makes you think every time he catches a ball and goes to throw it in the stands that this will replay in his head.

I don't think he'll be throwing anymore and wouldn't doubt MLB puts an end to the practice.
Rough year for Hamilton

Fuck this.

I saw this thread late last night, I still can't get it out of my head. The whole situation is unbelievable.

The Guy who was just trying to catch a ball (probably for his kid)
The kid who had to watch it all happen in front of him.
Hamilton was just doing the usual nice gesture ....
The wife who just thought her son and husband would return with smiles on their faces. She never saw him again.

Sucks. Makes you think about your own life and how fortunate you are to avoid unusual circumstances.

I have tickets for my son and I to go out. It will be his very first big league game. I'm 39 and he's 7(I think this is the same ages of the father and son). I have no fears of death but I do have a fear of leaving my children before they're grown. I feel horrible for the young kid losing his father and it makes me feel weird about going to the game.

I think there will be a strong bond between Josh Hamilton and this kid. I have a feeling they will both need each other.

Been thinking the same thing......Sad situation all the way around. Poor kid having to witness his dad falling to his death over a ball. Hamilton must be a wreck over this as well.......Very Sad.

A terrible thing. Just goes to show you never know. I remember as a kid in Fenway Park and Frank Robinson teasing us by bouncing the ball off the wall just out of our reach as we stretched from the centerfield bleachers to reach it. Very sad for all involved.

I had the exact same thoughts. Guy just trying to get a ball for his kid. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I actually wonder why this doesn't happen more often. Not so much with sober fans with gloves but drunks near those 2nd and higher deck railings.
