baseball needs to ban players from throwing balls into the crowds. its bad enough when they go after foul balls. they should also have protective guards around all ledges in baseball stadiums so if people lean over to catch and ball at least they have a chance if they lose their balance and/or fall.

twice this year people died at baseball games, falling over a ledge. that's insane, although i'm suprised it hasn't happened more. going after a ball when you are sitting in the 1st row is more than dangerous, bad shit can happen

Couldn't agree more, Sley. I'm not sure when the thrill of getting a ball at a game left me. Probably over 40 years ago. Really what's the big deal  Even less of an accomplishment once the players did start throwing them in the stands. It's like an achievement and tradition that's been carried on forever. Just my opinion. :0008
The throwing in the stands by outfielders probably started to keep the "boozers and assholes" from tauting them during games. Kind of a "peace treaty" symbol.

The practice of throwing the ball into the stands has gone from almost nonexistent to accelerating greatly as a direct result of the strike in 95, kind of a goodwill gesture to get the fans back on baseball side. Talk about a well-intentioned gesture going horribly wrong. Just terrible.

Nice job ESPN.

During the Rangers press conference Nolan Ryan asks the media to stop showing the video out of respect to the widow and her request.

What does ESPN do?

They show the still video of the fall minutes after Ryan says it and during the press conference.

the ball wasn't intended for him. he reached in front of the guy to his left who had a glove who was going to catch it.

Yep.. He reached way out over his son and over a guy whom the ball was thrown right to.. Plus he had on sandles. He had zero traction at all. Recipe for disaster.

Its been on the radio all day here locally in Dallas. You guys might find it interesting that originally they thought the guy was fine. He was talking and moving his arms. They were taking him to the hospital to treat a broken arm when he suffered a massive heart attack. We wont know what really went wrong until post mortem exam

Sad sad sad day for that poor kid... And Hamilton is especially broken up. Hes a guy who is walks such a thin line of sobriety... Got to wonder if this will push him over the ledge

Tragic

Go to a game with a kid and you'll see that it doesn't matter where the ball came from. I took my son to the Ranger's minor league team in Frisco, one of the players threw him a ball as they where leaving the field and entering the dugout. It was two years ago, he still has the ball and still tells all of his friends the story. Baseball has a hard enough time drawing in the youth but this tradition is one of those things that makes it hard. It's the ONE thing that separates baseball from other sports.

I pray it doesn't...Our sobriety can be such a tool of strength most of the times..and then the course of living reminds us everyday to remain steadfast and not throw it all away.

Hopefully there will be those in his circle who understand the need to cast a glancing eye his way and also a reassuring word of his accomplished path.

Layinwood, I understand where you are coming from, and I've gone to games with plenty of kids. but in most cases it's crazy adults fighting over these balls, some even snatching them from kids. Certainly it's something kids think are special just like autographs and cards use to be, but adults have ruined it for most. I don't think kids get the same thrill they use to from batted balls into the stands. Just an opinion, I could be wrong in the eyes of some. :0008

Great input.

Can you spell out what you are really trying to say?

This act of reaching on front of another fan, is justifiably punishable by death.

:0008 Thanks for explaining this fucking idiotic post.

you oughtta be careful there woody...i think you might just throw a shoulder out patting yourself on the back........

"the ball wasn't intended for him. he reached in front of the guy to his left who had a glove who was going to catch it."

you really extrapolated your response from this post?.....that nickcage thought the guy deserved "to die" for reaching over to snag a ball that might not have been intended for him?....i kinda thought he was just providing more info...some context.....feel like the guy is taking more heat for his post than he deserves...

but that`s just me....

carry on...:0074

not a shot at woody,he`s a good guy.....it`s an emotional issue......especially with the little boy sitting there....

i think it`s just a natural,instinctive reaction to reach out for a ball at a ballpark...very tragic....
