Gambling ... such a wild ride

Monday night, I have Dallas +7 in the NFL. They are up 15 going into 4th quarter, they are down 10, win by 3. This all happens in acrazy 15 minutes.
Tuesday NBA
I miss read my notes and take NJ-Clev under. I know I am in trouble at the half. Being the chaser I am, I take Hou-NO over 166'. At the end of 3 quarters, I need 55 pts to be scored (typical NBA game 50 pts in a quarter) so I chase again. I take Charlotte +16'. As the 1st quarter is ending with Charlotte up by 6, Hou-NJ have combined for 58 pts to give me the over.
As Paul Harvey says, you can guess the rest of the story... The Sac game is at or near 16 pts for the last quarter and a half. Bickerstaff gets a technical with 2 and a half minutes left, Bobby Jackson hits a three with 2 minutes left and Charlotte misses 3 shots in the last 24 seconds and you guessed it I lose by the hook, 109-92.
Chase again, playing BJ. Luckily I pick up the 355 I was down plus another 75.
Why am I telling you this story? Just maybe one day I'll get my head out of my a** and realize a loss is a loss and just move on.

that's a hard lesson to learn, especially with sports betting and lots of games on the board.

It's so important to understand that gambling is a long term investment, not only in time, but funds.

In in other terms, it's simply too easy to get caught up in the ups and downs of missed calls, instant replays, nears misses by the hook, etc. So many things can happen in a game that can adversely effect the outcome, that you can drive yourself crazy fretting over each and every bet. It's easier on the mind to evaluate success over a longer period of time than game by game.

I actually learned my lesson from golf. At the club, anywhere from 10-15 players would all show up and play. The usual bets were $25 nassau, automatic presses at 2 down, with everyone, even the guys in different groups. Being a low handicap, I had to give strokes to most players and I felt the exposure was too much, so I tried to play only the guys in my foursome.

A veteran of the group took me aside and explained that being the best player, I would eventually win most of the bets. The idea would then to make as many bets as possible and forget about each individual one.....just concentrate on the overall outcome. He was correct.

It was always interesting to see some 12 handicapper come up and be chortling about having beat me out of $200. for the 2nd week in a row. Little did he recognize that while he won his little bet, I won much more money overall by looking at the bigger picture.

If your a decent 'capper, or at least a good 'tail-er, using good money management, you'll prevail in the long run.

Yes, gambling can be a rocky road, but using the right attitude and seeing the big picture makes it a little easier on the mind...
