NCAA Betting: Georgia Tech vs. Miami

A big ACC battle kicks off the third week of NCAA football betting action. Tonight?s feature Thursday night game is a Top 25 battle between the No. 14 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the host No. 20 Miami Hurricanes.

The Canes are currently a 5.5-point favorite and this number might still go up (it opened at 4.5 points). We could see 6 by game time if the betting action continues as it is. Sports bettors are lining up solidly behind the home favorite right now, with online sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.com reporting 70% of the action tipped to Miami.

Miami is coming off an impressive win over Florida State to open the season with a 1-0 mark, while Georgia Tech is 2-0, having played both weeks. Tech picked up their second win of the season last week, beating the Clemson Tigers 30-27 in another Thursday night battle. The Yellow Jackets had a 24-7 lead going into the half, which had their backers feeling good about cashing a ticket, but they allowed the Tigers to come (Clemson took a 27-24 lead with in the fourth quarter). They finally pulled out the win but couldn?t cover the 5.5-points.

The Canes have struggled recently vs. the Yellow Jackets, but then again this team has struggled vs. most decent teams the last several years. That is why this game is so important to both teams, but particularly the Miami program. A win here signals they might be relevant again on a national level.

Miami is currently on a four-game losing streak vs. Georgia Tech, losing both straight up and against the spread in all four games. And in their last 15 games in this pointspread situation (favored by 6-points or less), they haven?t exactly delivered for their backers, putting up an unimpressive 5-10 ATS mark.

In their last nine when an underdog of 6-points or less, the Yellow Jackets aren?t sharp either going 2-7 ATS.

However, Over/Under bettors take note: in their last 13 games when listed at +6 and less, Georgia Tech has posted 1 Over and 12 Unders, including 8 Unders in a row. Those are pretty compelling numbers.

The Total is set at 54, but the betting action has favored the ?Under? and this betting trend appears to be increasing as of Thursday morning. The ?Under? has 57% to 60% of the volume at a few online sportsbooks.

After defeating Jacksonville State to open the season, then beating ACC rival Clemson from the Atlantic Division last week on national television, the jackets now face their first Coastal Conference challenger, the dreaded ?U.? The Canes come into the game riding high after defeating their bitter rivals from the sunshine state, the Florida State Seminoles 38 to 34 to open up the season. As usual, the FSU v. Miami game had its drama. No wide right this time, but the Noles did drop a potential game winning touchdown pass in the end zone as time expired.

A closer look at the FSU victory over Jacksonville State deserves some mention as we expose the reality of what Miami has actually accomplished in their opening game. Florida State was actually trailing JSU 9 to 7 with 35 seconds left in the game when they scored on a 1 yard touchdown run making it 13 to nine after missing the extra point. Not certain if it was wide right. Then the JSU quarterback fumbles the football with 21 seconds left in the game and the Noles take it back for a score, and miss yet another extra point for a final tally of 19 to 9.

So the issue becomes how come Florida State can only score 2 touchdowns on a division II JSU team, yet put up 34 (a dropped pass away from 41) on the Canes? No one really knows, but let me make this observation; At this juncture in the season, maybe the Canes and Noles just aren?t what they used to be. We will find out in a couple of days if the ?U? is really back, as everyone in college football so desperately wants. While Miami has the usual array of outstanding athletes on both sides of the ball, one game is not enough time to get a sense of where they are headed as a football team. Certainly they have made good hires in upgrading their coordinators on both sides of the ball. Now they will face their first serious challenge of the season in Georgia Tech.

In conjunction with the outstanding special teams play, Coach Paul Johnson has purposely been keeping the offense rather vanilla ahead of our upcoming 2 coastal conference foes; The ?U? and North Carolina. Folks, expect to see quite a bit of misdirection with the option plays in the offense this game. It?s coming. Now that the players have a better grasp of what they are doing in this offense, these plays will become more effective especially against a fast pursuing defense like the Canes. That in turn will open the door for Dwyer making more positive yardage up the middle.

Jacory Harris is a very good quarterback and I expect him to throw quite often against our defense. But I don?t see the playmakers being as effective this game as Spiller and Ford were last Thursday night. Our defense has played pretty well against the run to date, but we need to be able to get a better pass rush going beyond just Derrick Morgan. We?ll see who steps it up this game along the front line.

So while all the articles were heaping the praise on the Canes after their season opening win against the Noles, it now appears that win wasn?t as special as everyone thought. Just like our 33 to 3 victory at Notre Dame a few years ago to open the season. While everyone was crowing about the worst opening season loss in South Bend history, that turned out to be much less than what it first appeared as the Fighting Irish?s season evolved into a woeful 3 and 9 record. All things being equal, the few extra days the Canes have had in preparing for the Georgia Tech offense and defense will be negated by what we learned from the Clemson game.

I?m not into predicting final scores, but I do believe that Coach Paul Johnson has been holding back a lot offensively and saving it for our Coastal Conference opponents. Frankly, I would rather see a special teams touchdown off the fake field goal last week, as opposed to having to open up the playbook prematurely. Those kinds of wrinkles only add to the game preparation time needed to get ready to play against these very well coached yellow jackets.

Now for my final comment on the passing game; this offense is not intended to be a west coast offense with a high completion percentage type of passing game. 125 to 150 yards per game through the air is a bonus. Yes, Josh needs to keep the ball in the field of play to give his receivers a chance to make a catch, but remember, he completed them when they matter the most in the 4th quarter to move the offense into scoring position. As far as spreading the ball around to other receivers, all that matters is that we have a completion when the ball is thrown. Whether it?s Demaryius Thomas or someone else, at the end of the game, so long as we move the ball and score points that is all that matters. What did show up prominently against a very stout Clemson defense is that there were no sacks on Josh. The offensive line played very well in protecting Josh in the passing game.
