Have heard it works, but hey I have never used it? For those of you that don't know, it goes like this: When checking into a hotel, pay for the room using a credit card, then ask for a very nice room and say this is for you and hand the receptionist $20 or $50 (as a tip). I have heard (in Vegas specifically)that people get upgraded to suites and much nicer than "standard" rooms when trying this. I may give it a shot in Vegas, because I can't get room discounts at the hotel/casinos down there. Anyway, worth a try, especially in a service industry town such as Vegas:D

sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. i guess it depends on the person checking you in. you don't need to offer money because, if you ask nicely, they will do it for free if they can. then you can tip them whatever you are comfortable with.

I tried the $20/50 trick to upgrade from a handshake to a reach around and it didn't work, but I did get a firm handshake

congrats franky, that's awesome!!

i hit a brick wall and have weighed between 212 and 215 for a couple weeks now. i might have to use the treadmill or abs lounge to make any more progress, although i'm happy now, really, and as long as i can hold this weight i don't need to lose anymore. went from 40 waist pants back to 36. wore those 40 bastids for close to a year and they were just beginning to get tight and had to do something. UGH!

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
I've used $20 trick many times!

I've used $20 trick many times!

$50 if you're staying a week or at swanky place.

Jack is right, you should politely ask first and try to get upgrade free.

If that doesn't work, then give 'em the $20 and plead if they could "look furthur". All of this very tough on a big holiday weekend.

but trying $20 after asking first for free one I find bit awkward (my buddies think I'm crazy!) and I just give 'em the bill right off the bat---give them ID and credit card first, then move $20 over, with most of my hand covering it. Works most times, esp at fancy strip casino/hotels. Some local casinos, like Orleans, it's much harder to pull off.

If you are there for special event, like wedding anniversary, birthday or such---you mention this and get upgrade free most times, no trick needed.

be very polite and sunny. Smile when you see clerk and say how you love being in town and at hotel.

It works best with old guy clerks, least with young gals.

be specific as you can for upgrade you want (strip view, jacuzzi, suite with bar, etc). You can look up what rooms available at hotel website. But reasonable--don't try for upgrade to presidential jacuzzi suite if booked for $59 room!

Clerks love efficiency and helps to have ID, credit card and $20 bill, and specific request ready to go before you get to window.

style counts for a lot, don't be overbearing or bring any attention to the folded $20 sticking out between your cc and ID (way most folks do it) or under your hand....reminds me of "la mordida" (the bite, or bribe) in Mexico. A buddy of mine once tried to get his documents back from traffic cop and go on his way with a bribe (very standard thing there), but in his ham-fisted attempt--waving the bill and asking if it's enuf---ensured that he would go to jail for his minor accident! tho the quantities of tequila consumed meant we didn't exactly have all our wits about us... :142smilie

Good post...thanks for the info.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but your part about "la mordida" brought back a funny memory. I was on a trip to Alcapulco and had to drive from there to mexico city (long haul) in a van of 9 of us. We had to leave at 2am and I didn't see a light and ran a red. Sure enough the policia was right there to pull me over. Of course I play the dumb american and pretend I don't speak spanish, all the while my columbian friend up front pleads with the guy. I start squirming when I know he's telling her he is going to take me to the station and I will have to miss my flight. Sure enough, all it took was 150$ american to change is mind. To be honest, I was more than happy to pay it!

You gave him at least $100 too much. I have bribed my way out of a traffic stop at least a dozen times in Mexico. Usually $20 is sufficient.

Probably so but he named his price and I wasn't about to try to bargain with him..not at 2am when i needed to drive 6 hours to make a flight! Money well spent.

Historically, when Jack and I have stayed together, he dominates the powder room.

More importantly, are you gonna be available to hang out some, Lanny?

You gonna miss another gathering, Freelancc, even though you're right there? I promise that nobody will think it's weird that instead of talking, you communicate with signs.
