"the bunker"
There were some eye-opening remarks from Bryant Gumbel on the most recent episode of HBO's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel. According to a transcript posted by a television columnist named Seth Frelich, Gumbel said the following in his closing monologue last week :

"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games..... Count me among those who don’t like them and won’t watch them ... Because they’re so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try too.

Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing.....

""So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention."" Try not to point out that something’s not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what’s called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won ... So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they’re done, when we can move on to March Madness — for God’s sake, let the games begin."

is there a more condescending sports p-ick on t.v.?...other than maybe jim rome?...

this strikes me funny because i still can`t figure out whether gumbel is a very "white" black guy or a moderately" black" white guy......

he makes wayne brady seem ghetto....

actually,i haven`t watched them either...but,i can`t even imagine the shitstorm that would occur if these remarks were tweeked and aimed at a minority....

how is this guy a bigger celebrity than his much more talented brother?

I agree....Gumbel's an idiot. Lack of blacks??? Hello!!!!...this is the WINTER olympics! Lots of Scandinavians, not very many Nigerian distance runners here.

BTW, I am a Wayne Brady fan. Too bad his talk show got cancelled. Guy is a pretty damn good singer, too.

he might be the most arrogant idiot on television. I hate to agree with him about anything, but I find myself concordant with a few of his comments. Many of the 'sports' are a joke, that's for sure.

If the sport isn't dominated by blacks it's not a sport I guess eh Mr. Gumble... I'll tell you what is laughable, his NBA, now that is a JOKE of gargantuan proportion.. Hey Gumble strap on a pair of double runners and have a skate by Kevin Stevens so he can do a Lindros on your sorry ass..
What a Jackass.........

i agree with 6`5"...some of this stuff is off the wall....

the guy`s just so condescending and arrogant...

steven g. smith (or whatever his initial is) and gumbel show that you can be a white/black yuppie or be a real " street homey"and still be pretentious to the nth degree...

to be politically correct, jim rome has the honky contingent covered like a blanket...

I have to agree with his assessment of some of the "sports" featured in the Winter Games. Not the black/white part, but when there is subjective voting taking place, I don't consider that a sport. A sport should have some objective method for determining a winner, e.g., points based on the achievement of observable tasks (crossing the goal line, putting the ball thru the basket, etc.) or who runs the fastest or jumps the farthest, etc. It's not a sport if the winner is the person whose performance was judged "prettier" than the others.

I hope Gumbal loses his job over that. Extremely unprofessional comment given that his show is supposed about sports, not just black dominated sports.

No secret he's been a pompous jerk for like his entire career, but he has talent and I've been fascinated by a lot of those HBO stories.

If this is not considered going too far, then the next white journalist who makes a similar statement should also be given a free pass.

With the likes of jesse jackson, julian bond, and al sharpton no white person let alone journalist will ever get a free pass.

and goes full circle to that thread about blacks and racism. i wouldn't worry about the equity of this in the long run. some things like this will have sort of a reverse-racism for a certain amount of time. we happen to be here during that time. i can see things changing already though. would be nice to see gumbal take a hit.

Essentially I agree, however whenever we have an umpire, boxing judge, referee, football official or whatever, there is a whole lot of subjective decision making going on.

Oh sure, there's going to be some human element involved, but the lesser the better, especially when it comes to how the contest is scored. Which guy crosses the finish line first is pretty objective. Which team has the most guys cross home plate is pretty objective, even if maybe one of those guys should have been out earlier. Boxing is getting fuzzier all the time - if they just counted punches, it wouldn't be so bad, but the judges are making a mockery of it.

i don`t think he should be fired...but,i didn`t think jimmy the greek or campanis should have been demonized and had their careers ruined....

i posted this to draw attention to the double standard that exists in this country...

campanis and the greek were old men... ....you could argue that they`re comments were born of the mindset of another era....

stupid comments?...sure...insensitive?....yeah,probably to some...

but, what happened to them was cruel and unusual,imo...

an apology wasn`t good enough...

i doubt either guy was a harvard alum....

what`s gumbel`s excuse?...a very contemporary fellow...he knows the game...

the media dogged the issue until the powers that be had no other option than to shitcan these guys...

so be offended...vent your spleen......and move the f-ck on...

there`s such a huge double standard in this country...unless you`re not an objective person,it`s pretty obvious...

it`s obvious that free speech is a myth...there`s only politically correct free speech...

we`re seeing that,once again,in the abu gharaib/piss christ/elephant dung mary/mohammad cartoon controversy....

and i`m sorry to say it...i know the media police will jump me again...

but,in large part,it`s the media that decides who gets the axe....by the sheer focus of their considerable power and influence...

you can have free speech if you have your own special interest group that is willing to drive your agenda down the public`s throats....

gumbel`s not going anywhere...nor,should he,imo....

you can`t go back and unring that bell(the greek and campanis)....

it`s really pretty sad..

I don't know, GW. I don't care much one way or the other about Gumbel, but I'm not sure his situation is comparable with the Greek.

My memory is that the Greek's comments were to the effect that a lot of the best athletes in America were black because their slavemasters somehow bred them that way (like horses, dogs, etc.). I can't blame the network for not wanting that kind of theory put out on their stations.

Gumbel's comment that you can't claim to have the greatest collection of athletes without any blacks included doesn't really strike me as offensive to anybody. I'm white, and I'm not offended at all by the notion that some of the world's best athletes are black. Maybe I'm missing your point, but I don't see how this is comparable to Jimmy the Greek.

you think the g.o.p. convention remark was a little uncalled for?.....

wasn`t that racially insensitive to black republicans?...reinforcing the uncle tom stereotype?....

heyward...i honestly think theres some basis in fact for what the greek said...as distasteful as it may be...

shouldn`t have said it...and was vilified...and i believe,apologized....but,it wasn` good enough...

the media never let it go...

should everyone that says something racially insensitive be fired?...

you see the same thing happening on radio stations all over the country...with comments about islam...

is there really free speech in this country?...or just politically correct free speech?...

as far as the world`s greatest athletes being black?.....i don`t know...alot of great black athletes out there...

long distance runners for sure...

but, aren`t most of the world`s "greatest black athletes"americans?.......based on an american perception?...i.e. football...basketball...etc?...

does nigeria have a great basketball team?...is their soccer team exceptional?...

why are american blacks so exceptional?..opportunity?...yes......and maybe some other considerations......was the greek maybe even partially right?...

i don`t think the thought police(i.e. media)are fair....
