I took some time to go down and see my Dad in Tampa and as most of you know there was a Hurricane down there. I had no idea it was hurricane season or I may have stayed home.
My Dad is older and rather stubborn and set in his ways. When they reported the Hurricane was headed straight down Tampa bay my Dad said he was staying and riding it out. The house is right at the end of the Bay and about 1 mile inland. We were in the evacuation zone along with about 900 hundred thousand other people.
I could envision the storm surge rising 15 feet and slaming into the Bay flooding everything. When it hit the winds were at 145 Mph. Holy crow !
I am used to Tornados in Georgia. That is usually only 30 minutes of fear even when there is a warning.
During hurricanes I found out, they tell you the thing is going to hit about 1 pm with Tropical winds of 75 MPH and then the real storm would come in about 8 PM. 10 hours of that !
I was not looking forward to it.
I must say the emergency people there in Florida were very professional in informing the public about what would happen. They would turn the power off about noon they said, so it would be easier to get it back on when the storm passed. That was all good but then we would only have the radio to listen to and no air conditioning.
My Dad still refused to leave. His idea was that he didn't want anyone stealing his stuff after the hurricane was over. He would get his gun and guard his home and property. He felt we wouldn't be able to get back home to guard his property. I told him the winds are 145 miles a hour Category 3 or 4 " There won't be any property to guard, lets pack up and leave now"!. No way Jose he said.
Friday morning, I could hear the fire dept over a loudspeaker, riding through a trailer park about 2 miles away telling everyone there to get out now. The worst part was waiting for it. The hours passed so slow, I just wanted it to be over. If I was going to die I had alot of time to think about it.
In the end Hurricane Charley turned at the last minute towards Ft Myers and missed Tampa Bay by 50 miles.
After the initial sigh of relief I thought about kosar and worried that the eye of the storm which is ten miles across , might take our beloved kosar to an untimely early death there in Ft Myers.
Then I come back and find out kosar is lounging in Vegas with madjack, safe as a bug in a rug. That rat bastid. To think during my time of trama, I was worried about him !
Life sure is funny.
Did I mention that KOD was almost killed !
