Just my humble opinion:
I need to ask a question first. When cappers in message forums refer to the 'public' just whom exactly are they referring to? WE ARE ALL THE BETTING PUBLIC. I think The public is an internet buzzword that was born a few years ago, that tried to make certain posters make themselves appear sharper than every other Tom, Dick, and Harry sportsbettor.
I would be very wary of these consensus sites.
They are only a small sampling of what the entire 'public' is betting.
Does sharp money still exist? I believe so, but not to the extent that many people who are labeling others 'The Public' want to believe. Many of these lines have been trimmed so bad by the time we get them. Steam players, groups etc are still not hitting 60%. The proliferation of information on internet message forums have made 'the public' much sharper. I have not kept a record but it seems that many more of the 'easy' or 'square' sides have been hitting; particularly in high-profile NFL and college football and basketball games alike. Contrarian handicapping just for the sake of it will destroy your bankroll just as fast as laying 300 chalk every time the Red Sox play the Royals.
I just have a hard time believing many books want you to know what they are betting etc. Furthermore if 75% of players are backing a side, what is the money differential? What if they have what they label a 'sharp' player, which in my opinion is someone that consistently beats them or gets the best line on a game, has a large play on that other 25%?

I never look at the "public" or "concensus." I was just giving him a link that he asked for. I searched for it...
Basically, when making selections, I prefer to look at weather,matchups,graduation, and styles and make my picks. I could care less who the public is on and who the media hypes up. For me, it's all about the analysis of the 2 teams.
