The Redskins' defense has been bad in the first quarter vs. Denver. The big part of the problem has come in coverage, mostly by the defensive backs but also on one play by the linebackers. Case Keenum has picked them apart. If the defense wants to improve, then it can't just be about having new guys on the line. The coverage must be tighter

The Redskins wanted to test Adrian Peterson's stamina and they got a good feel for it on their second drive, handing him the ball on seven consecutive plays. Peterson cut well and managed one 13-yard run. His other long carry was for six yards. But the key is that late in the drive he still looked fresh

448/129 carries..........

speaking of fantasy football........

Royce Freeman has had a TD in every preseason game.

Biggest takeaway from the Jets' loss to the Giants: If the starting job is his to lose, Sam Darnold didn't lose it. It wasn't a lights-out performance, but he did a decent job in two-plus quarters. He started off hot with a long TD drive, but five of his next six series went three-and-out. The good: He battled poor field position and unfavorable down-and-distances, thanks to penalties ? but he never lost his poise. Flip side: This was his first extended outing against a starting D and he wasn't as sharp as usual. Chances are, Darnold will end up with the job because the Jets are smitten with the rookie and he's had by far the most work with the starters. But he still has plenty of growing to do

QB Blake Bortles had another shaky outing -- two interceptions -- but he did manage to lead the offense to 10 first-half points before teams began substituting. A bigger concern is the status of WR Marqise Lee, who suffered what appeared to be a severe left knee injury on a low tackle after making a catch. Lee is the Jaguars' most experienced receiver (171 catches) and led the team with 56 receptions last season, so they'll miss his production if he's out for a significant amount of time. He's also the best blocker among the receivers and that will impact the run game some, too. This puts more pressure on veteran Donte Moncrief, who signed a one-year, $9.6 million guaranteed contract, to step up and lead a young group of receivers that includes two second-year players and a rookie. Moncrief ended up catching three passes for 62 yards in the first half

Is Bortles an asset or once again a win in spite of?

Their D will be awesome but will it once again be on the field to long?

In case you're wondering, Taylor Heinicke will start at quarterback for the Panthers tonight at Pittsburgh (7:30 p.m. ET) and play the first quarter. Garrett Gilbert will play the second quarter. Kyle Allen will play the second half. Heinicke has the edge as Cam Newton's backup. The question remains will there be room on the roster for Gilbert as the third quarterback?

Interesting note on the Jets' mop-up quarterback, John Wolford. The recent Wake Forest graduate was planning to accept an internship at an equity firm in Winston-Salem, N.C., when the Jets called with a job offer. Wolford, a non-roster invitee in the Jets' rookie minicamp, arrived in time to get three practices under his belt before facing the Eagles. He's a practice-squad candidate, according to Todd Bowles. He could make a minimum of $5,700 per week on the practice squad. Better pay than his internship, that's for sure.

The Cowboys scored just 43 points in the preseason, which is the fewest since Jerry Jones purchased the team in 1989. But remember this: Dak Prescott played four series in the preseason and the offense scored 17 points on three drives. In 1987, the Cowboys scored 36 preseason points and finished 7-8 that season.
the Cowboys will go as far as their running game will take them..OS

Coach Todd Bowles explained the rationale behind the Teddy Bridgewater trade: "It was a good deal. We love Teddy. At the same time, we had three good quarterbacks. It was a good business deal for us. We had three and got good value back for it. It was something we had to do." Bowles insisted Bridgewater "was truly in the quarterback competition," which is just coachspeak. Frankly, he was the best QB on the roster, but the organization felt Bridgewater and Darnold were close enough to validate a trade. It's Darnold's show and they parlayed Bridgewater into a third-round pick.

NOW........was Teddy the best QB in Minn.

Matt Patricia was asked Thursday night what the biggest reason for optimism is into the regular season. Detroit was 1-3 in the preseason and -- these are my words -- didn't look particularly good in any game when the starters were in. Patricia had earlier praised how his team had finished. But here was his answer in full:
"I mean, look, we're going to come in and we're going to work hard every single day. We're going to get better every day. We're going to try to do the best we can. Those guys are coming in, working real hard and that's a positive from my standpoint. They are trying to do it the right way. They are trying to improve. They understand that this is a long journey. This isn't a sprint that is going to take place overnight. This is something that is going to take a long time to do. This is something that is a change in the way that we're doing things in order to try and make it a sustainable situation. We're not trying to do something that's just going to happen for one day and then not the next. We're trying to do it consistently over a long period of time so that I have seen progress with. We have a long way to go and we'll continue to do that."
