Pocket PC question?

Just got a pocket pc and want to use it the online from anywhere I go..

What is the best way to do this? Is it to sign up for cell phone wireless?

Also what is the best wireless deal if that is the case!

I was going to do the same thing at the beginning of the football season, so that I could access my offshore from work and keep up on the action. I signed up for a 15 day trial with VERISON
wireless. They gave me a windows based pocket pc that doubled as a picture taking phone. At that time I thought the technology would have been better than what it was. I had nothing but trouble (getting kicked off line...little to no support...outrageous expenses.) I quickly dropped it after the 15 day trial. I decided to wait until better technology became available.

I have been wrestling with this decision myself for quite sometime, wireless phone access still seems a bit on the expensive side, I am basing that on the fact that I want to use it to play horses during the day and alot of my wagers are based on the CURRENT odds, so real-time access is a must. The vast majority of pocket PC's (which one did you get btw?) have bluetooth wireless enabled in them, this is a great feature if your near a hotspot, but as far as personal access thats unlimited, I think this is just way too expensive to be reasonable for personal use. Please let us know what you find though.

If your work has a wireless system installed then any pocket PC with bluetooth should be able to get access, and I don't think they can tell your using the signal, I may be wrong on that though, any idea?

I'm not sure if they could tell or not. We have access to the INTRANET (within the company system), and supervisors have access to the entire internet. Of course guys have been known to "procure" a supervisors password and access the net. The company has come out with several WARNINGS to the effect that their system must be used for company business only. Naturally I wanted a system that was totally independent of the company to take care of my business. VERISON was the best I'd come across at that time (last Aug), but price and access fell far short of my expectations.

Here is what I found out but still more ?'s..

Wireless service is to expensive!! So I found out that there is a cable you can buy to hook up your Pocket PC and phone together and the phone acts as a modem!

Here is what it says:

How does the Pocket PC cellular cable work?


Pocket PC's are equipped with a section under settings called "connections" where you simply type in your current Internet Service Providers (ISP) Name, User Name, Password and phone number. This is the same ISP information that you use for your other computers. Same account, nothing changes. When you tap on "connect", the Pocket PC dials your ISP though the cellular phone and connects you to your ISP and the internet. You do not require software drivers. Everything is built into the operating system. You get connected in less than 10 seconds.

Once online you simply tap on Internet Explorer or Avantgo to browse the web. To send/receive email simply go to your Inbox and set up your email info. You will in all cases continue to use your current email address, user name and password. Nothing changes. No software is required other than what comes standard with your Pocket PC.

AOL users may download the AOL for Pocket PC software from the AOL web site, however AOL will only support higher connection speeds. Please contact America Online directly for more information.

The reason you don't need a modem is because your phone acts as a modem. Your phone is a digital device and so is your Pocket PC. You only require a modem when connecting to a land line with a computer because a land line is an analog signal and computers are digital. So a modem is used to convert the digital signal coming out of the computer to an analog signal which your normal land line requires.

Because your phone is now digital, no conversion is necessary. Your Pocket PC easily communicates with any digital cellular phone that is "web enabled". Web enabled means it has the ability to transmit data as well as voice calls. Most cellular phones produced today are web enabled. However there are some which are not. Therefore it is important when purchasing a new phone to make sure it is a data capable, web enabled phone and a data cable is available for it.

Some cellular carriers may charge a monthly fee of $5.00 or so to use your phone as a modem. It is very important to check with your cellular provider to make sure you have this feature enabled if it is required.

There is no extra charge when using your cellular phone as a modem. You are only charged for the time you are online, just as you are when making a voice call.

So my ISP is road runner and you dont dial in, but can I still use Road Runner as my ISP??? I might have to call these guys but this might be they way to go!

BUT we still got to find out if this works under the Road Runner ISP and if not do we signup for MSN or AOL and does it take min's off the phone etc..
