Great person and ballplayer....first the fuked up eye now this....bless ya little Kirby :sadwave:

He put on a face that made him seem like a jolly, great guy, but from what I've heard, behind the scenes, he was most certainly NOT a great person. Frank Deford of Sports Illustrated did a fantastic story about this a few years ago.

Yea, I agree. Total shame that a man dies so young.....but if anything that happened on the road with this guy is true......spare me the long drawn out tributes about how great a guy he is.

I'd agree with you, however, I have never cheated on my wife or done anything that would subject me to being a "bad role model" I think it is laughable how "most" professional athletes use the going on the road card as their ticket to unlimited sex with strange women.
I am by no means a perfect person.....all I am saying is that for the next few weeks all we are going to hear is how great a person Kirby Puckett was....when in reality he probably wasnt all that great of a family man, and probably hurt a lot of people along the way.
The media would be better served to just report is death, talk about his great playing days, and let the personal stuff be left alone, and not lie about what he really wasnt

One thing not really mentioned here is all the good he did for the fans and general public. I agree, there were some dark times for Puckett, and those should not be glossed over. He was in a bit of a downward spiral after leaving the game. But after listening to the call in shows here for the past three days and how he touched so many people in a positive way, it does give some more positivity to Puckett the person.
Some confuse great ballplayers with good and decent people. Puck had his downward spiral not because of leaving the game or the eye problems. Kirby was who he was long before he left the game. Great player, gave something back, to me it's easy to give money. When the game was over,Kirby was Kirby and there was no foundation to stand on. When you take away the game you see the man. In some cases there is little pleasure in seeing the men we glorify.

Would you agree then, that Yankee capt. Thurman Munson has no business being in the Hall of Fame? His offensive #'s pale in comparison to Puckett's: 113 HR, 701 RBI, .291 BA, .346 OBP and .410 SLG over 11 seasons.

How about Ty Cobb? The man who was once considered the greatest baseball player of all time was an unabashed racist and known to have been at times a dirty player.
Let's not forget that when Kirby Puckett retired following the 1995 season, he had attained the highest career batting average (.318) for a right-handed batter since Joe DiMaggio.
His other accomplishments:
* six-time Gold Glove winner
* named to 10 consecutive All-Star teams
* MVP of the 1991 World Series
* finished among the top 10 in MVP voting seven times
Not bad for someone who played only 12 years.
