i heard on espn radio:

an eye witness reported that he flew over the handlebars hit a car's windshield then he hit the ground.

i guess they closed the roads and surrounding roads where it happened.

he has been taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

that was all that was reported at the moment.

Watching local news now which is all over the story. Witnesses say his face was covered in blood, nurses at the hospital say he didn't know his name.

He is in the trauma unit, which is standard for this type of accident.

Witnesses say they saw a woman turn left in front of him while he clearly had the green light.

That broad better move out of town immediatly. People around here throw garbage in Tommy Maddox's yard for losing a single game, if she ****ed up our QB long term, wow, I can't imagine the retrebution.

Roethlisberger hurt in motorcycle crash
Monday, June 12, 2006

By Michael A. Fuoco, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured when his motorcycle was involved in a crash on the 10th Street Bridge today.

Roethlisberger was injured shortly after 11:30 a.m. at the Second Avenue side of the bridge near the Armstrong Tunnel.

Steelers' spokesman David Lockett confirmed Roethlisberger was involved and is being treated at Mercy Hospital.

An eyewitness said she saw a motorcycle headed outbound on Second Avenue as a car was coming inbound. The car made a left turn toward the bridge in front of the cyclist. The motorcycle hit the car and the operator flew into the windshield and then hit the ground.

The witness said she went to the aid of the motorcyclist and asked his name. He said it was "Ben" and tried to get up, but she told him to stay still.

The victim was bleeding heavily from a head injury.

Roethlisberger has been known to refuse to wear a helmet when operating his cycle.

Agree, but it is what it is, kid should wear a helmet, everyone should. It doesn't matter who's at fault, it still hurts when your head bounces off a windshield.

Too bad, he should wise up and wear a helmet - it doesn't take much sense to know that motorcycles can be dangerous even if you have a lot of experience riding (because of the other people on the road). I like Big Ben, totally awesome QB and hope he is all right. Hopefully its just a mild concussion with a few scratches.

Now they are reporting a head injury and a broken jaw.

Investigator on the scene says he had almost zero time to hit the brakes so the accident probably happened at about 40-45 MPH.

Should you start to worry when the PR guy from the authorities uses words like "Critical injuries" and "Being investigated as a vehicular homicide"???

Why would he say that?

i think their comments are hopefully stretching to keep fans glued to their tv's. once again i hope its just a small incident blown out of porportion to get ratings. if it is, these schmucks should be called out on it.

Paper: Roethlisberger Involved In Motorcycle Accident

Clipped from the link:

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle accident, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said.

According to the Tribune-Review's Web site, the accident happened Second Avenue near the 10th Street Bridge.

Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet, according to the paper.

Police have closed down the bridge, Second Avenue and the Armstrong Tunnels.

Roethlisberger was taken to Mercy Hospital. There is no word on the extent of his injuries.

This is obviously one we'll watch for you. We're hearing reports that Roethlisberger was conscious but groggy. He reportedly could answer simple questions like what his name was, but he was unable to spell his last name. This is not necessarily indicative of a concussion however, as hardly anyone is able to spell Rothlsb... Rothisbe... Rothlesbur... Ben's last name. He was reportedly bleeding from the head.

ESPN's John Clayton has just reported that the injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

A witness told Channel 4 Action News that Roethlisberger went over his handlebars, hit the windshield of a car and then fell to the ground.

The witness said she saw the accident and went over to help but did not recognize Roethlisberger. When she asked him what his name was, she said he replied, "Ben."

The woman added that Roethlisberger asked her a series of questions, including where he was and what state he was in. He attempted to stand up but the woman said she encouraged him not to move until paramedics arrived.

The bike and the car, a silver Chrysler New Yorker, have been towed to a police facility in Troy Hill for investigation.

The driver of the New Yorker is not believed to have been seriously injured.

Local news stayed on the air till 2:00 EST and at that time Ben was in surgery for head injuries and possibly a broken jaw, serious but stable condition.

Ben is a decent kid and even if he wasn't the Steelers QB I'd be rooting for him to be OK, but even though he is our QB I still think he is a stupid ****er for not wearing a helmet.

He always says he'll be careful when on the bike, well Ben, you can't be careful for others who do stupid things in front of you leaving you no outs.
