IMHO, society has allowed the drug use/peds to get out of control and it's gone on for quite some time. How is this possible and why would I say this?
In 1970 the average offensive linemen weighed in the 250-260 range, if you were over 300 lbs, you were no kind of athlete in the NFL at all. He we are today, ave OL is over 320 lbs. RB's were in the 5-11 to 6' range and 200 to 220 lbs, now they are over 6' for the most part and over 220 lbs, Adrian Petersen etc., but you also see many smaller backs like CJ (Titans) and Bush, Drew with Jags, etc., Ray Rice. TE's used to be 6'2 to 6'3 and 220 and 230 lbs, now they are 6'6 and 270 plus. QBs are slightly taller and slightly heavier than the 70's, go to the defensive side of the ball, LBs used to be in the 6'0 to 6'3 range and 220-230 range, now they are 6'3 plus and 255 plus.
MLB on the other hand, run an average career chart on all players - for instance, Lenny Dysktra, you see a 5'10 160 lb soaking wet OF with little power but a quick bat, then he's 5'10 and 190 and hitting them out of the park with one swing - that would raise a red flag immediately, A Rod, McGwire, Bonds, Sosa, all had quick bats and were slight of build for the most part of their minor league careers, then wallah, 20 lb muscle gain and HRs increased x 2 easily.
When I scouted, I would see kids that threw in the 80-84 mph range then the next spring they were throwing 90+, I would check their eyes, their behavior habits and 100% of them that got bigger and added that much velocity, I knew in my heart they were on roids this was in the early 80's, then the application of the drug changed to ointments and pills instead of injecting it in their thighs or buttocks. But also younger baseball players that are 18-19 years old are typically going to grow a lil more and add weight/muscle naturally, but not within 2-3 months, usually takes 12 plus months to see those changes physically with a baseball player.
When I played against Lawrence Taylor in HS, he was 6'1 190 lbs soaking wet, played firstbase for Lafayette HS in Williamsburgh, then he goes to UNC and grows to 6'3 and 240, most of it natural growth, but his behavior changed dramatically from his HS days to when he played for the Heels.
There are some freaks of nature that grow crazily during their post HS days to first two to three years in college, David "Admiral" Robinson was 6'7 when he went to the Naval Academy and grew to 7'1. There are some others that grew crazy like that too, Scottie Pippen was 6'1 and soaking wet before he went to Hendrix U in Arkansas. Dennis Rodman was 6'2 and 170 lbs before going to Southeastern Oklahoma U. Those guys on roids? No, but they grew up and filled out, each year at a steady pace during their amateur then pro careers. Rodman just got crazier mentally because he went from rags to riches and enjoyed the limelight and a demon of his own demise.
But MLB? Do they really think they are going to stop PEDS? No!! Is there a way to stop it? No! With the CBA stating when players can be checked, announced or unannounced is crazy, privacy rights, etc., just check them weekly, everyone on that roster must take a urine sample, with the high tech cameras and one way glass, you can see if the player pissed or brought in a sample to taint the urine, etc. Have them undress and take the urine test under a camera - this way no one can cheat in that regard. PEDS will show in urine samples no doubt about it, and why wouldn't they? If you are using something illegal it will show in the blood stream and the kidneys need to piss it out or the poison that's given off by any drug, would eat at the player eventually and they would get very ill.
Pro Rassling I call it, featured pro wrestlers that went on the juice and how many of them lost limbs, hair, got cancer of some sort, from the repeated use/abuse of roids, back then with injections, then it became a pill then an ointment, etc. Rasslers got bigger and stronger and became freaks of nature and their behavior got crazier.
Another drug that baseball players used that never gets mentioned much and it was rampantly used when I was in college in early 80's, used on equine (horse racing) called DMSO, some type of blood thinning agent applied to the skin like sun tan lotion, we had a couple players that used it regularly and one side effect was nose bleeds, and players felt no pain in their pitching arm, but the next day they were so stiff and sore, they had to use the drug again just to loosen up to throw or reach their ass to wipe it after taking a crap.
So in short, as long as their are loopholes with player agreements and the way testing is agreed upon, the insane will continue to run the insane asylum in MLB or in the NFL or in the NBA, without a proper testing program that is used weekly, the drug that they use (PED) will not vanish that quickly and will test positive if they are using it and hadn't for a 3-4 day period, the effects of the drug will stick in the urine or even blood test, even a trickle of it lingers.
Creatin, Andro, etc., all were available over the counter and even on shelves at Walgreens or CVS years ago and muscle building/weight gain formulas are still out, and if they are illegal to use, then why are they allowed to be sold to the general public? McGwire was a big user of Creatin and later Andro, Sammy Sosa too, Sammy was 5'10 160 when he signed as a 16 year old by the Rangers, then he was 6'0 240 with the Cubs overnight? Nope, it took a lil time, but that's a huge change in physicality appearance and his numbers got better in Chicago each year until he was caught.
What will happen next to the players that had used in the past, the Canseco's, Raffy Palmeiro's etc., is their health will deteriorate quicker than most average humans that don't smoke or use drugs, some tell all books will continue to come out and some stupid ass twitter message will leak out from one of the users or providers of illegal PEDS and a list of those names will be public eventually, but ain't nothing the Commishes of Pro sports or Congress can do to stop it, unless a structured weekly test is done for all players is conducted and any player testing positive is THROWN OUT OF THEIR RESPECTIVE SPORT FOR LIFE! If throwing them out is made an example of a GREAT PLAYER, a Braun or A Rod or Clemens, etc., perhaps a message will be sent to other MLB players - ban them from ever playing another game in MLB and see what happens down the line to minor leaguers and amateurs wanting to become MLB players eventually, the abuse/use will get cut to a bare minimum, and make testing at the HS and college level manadatory as well, make it part of their physical and make it in season, a 'checkpoint' if you will weekly and see how many players test positive, if they do, kick them OUT! Don't allow them back in no matter how good they were statisically for your team, etc., make an example of them, then maybe you will see the use of PEDS cut to a bare minimum.
One last case and point, with today's technology, advanced medicine, etc., how do we not know, if players back in the beginning of when baseball was founded, were using anything illegal? No use of twitter, email, iphones, etc., back then, the media was limited to local/major newspapers, not many were investigative enough and with limit of television back then, how would we ever hear of a Babe Ruth or Willie Mays or Satchel Paige ever using illegal PEDS back then?
