Injury Report

Injury Report

Martin Lapointe, sidelined because of an aggravated hamstring, is lobbying to get back into the lineup tomorrow against the Red Wings. Lapointe, who hates missing games, played his entire career with the Red Wings prior to signing with Boston as a free agent last summer. ''Marty skated pretty hard [yesterday],'' said Ftorek. ''He's going to be a son of a gun to try to keep out [of the lineup].'' ... Ftorek said Joe Thornton(shoulder injury) is not close to returning ...

Haven't seen anything in writing to confirm Wigs' post last night (Friday's Bruins) about Thornton needing shoulder surgery. I have heard it on the radio but didn't want to put something in writing here without some written confirmation.

=====

Martin Lapointe (hamstring) appears closer to making a return, though he's still a question mark for tomorrow's clash against his old team, the Detroit Red Wings, at the FleetCenter.

For the last 15 minutes of the skate yesterday, strength coach John Whitesides donned pads and worked out with the winger in the corners, driving through Lapointe's checks along the boards.

``I've been skating the past three or four days and it feels pretty good,'' said Lapointe. ``The trainers and Johnny Whitesides have helped me a lot in trying to strengthen the hamstring. It's doing pretty good, so it's just a matter of getting the green light.''

Samsonov shakes off shot

Bruins winger Sergei Samsonov took a puck off the foot in the third period and hobbled to the bench, but later returned said afterward he expects it to be fine. . . .

Along the forward lines, Mike Knuble, who missed five games with a bruised back, was back in the lineup against the Maple Leafs.

P.J. Stock and Jarno Kultanen were both healthy scratches against Toronto.

Wigs....Nice call.

Joe's on schedule for surgery

Joe Thornton will be playing hockey again before the season is out, but any plans for a fun-in-the-sun summer for the Bruins center have taken a major hit.

Thornton said yesterday that he'll definitely have surgery on the left shoulder he injured in practice a week ago in Atlanta - after the season. He suffered what's believed to be a subluxation of the joint, which is similar to the injury to his right shoulder incurred two seasons ago.

The B's leading scorer (22-40-62 totals) knew pretty quickly after he crashed into the boards in Atlanta that he'd have to go on the operating table at some point.

``We're going to do it for sure,'' said Thornton before the Bruins dropped a 2-1 decision to the Toronto Maple Leafs at the FleetCenter. ``I kind of knew what the feeling was like from the first one and I had a general idea. They said if it didn't get better in two weeks we'd have to get it done, so it's just one of those things. The other one feels great, so I'm sure this will probably make it stronger.''

Thornton was sure he'd be back this season, though coach Robbie Ftorek expects he'll be out ``at least'' another 7-10 days.

``In a couple of more days I think it'll feel better and I'll just wear the harness to get through the rest of the year,'' Thornton said.

But Thornton did say there hasn't been a lot of improvement in how the shoulder feels. Working out with a handful of other players during yesterday's optional morning skate, Thornton did a lot of conditioning, but still had to refrain from shooting the puck.

``It's pretty much the same, so I just have to keep icing it and get some strength back in it,'' said Thornton. ``Hopefully by next week, it'll be all right.''
