Heard on the radio that the B's and Bryan Berard are very close to a 1yr deal with a club option on the 2nd yr. When I get to see something in writing, I will post it.

Bruins Sign Defenseman Bryan Berard

BOSTON (August 13, 2002) - The Boston Bruins have agreed to terms with defenseman Bryan Berard, it was announced today by Bruins General Manager Mike O'Connell. A former first-overall draft pick and Calder Trophy winner, Berard was an unrestricted free agent. He agreed to a one-year contract plus a one-year club option and, in keeping with club policy, terms of the contract were not released.

"We feel that Bryan will help our team," said O'Connell. "He proved a lot last year by playing in all 82 games after being out of hockey for a year [due to an eye injury]. He is still an excellent skater and he has offensive talents that will blend well with our defense. I met with Bryan recently and was very impressed at his focus and dedication and he will bring that in addition to other leadership qualities to the team as well."

Berard, 25, returned to the NHL last season when the New York Rangers signed him as a free agent on October 4, 2001. His season debut came on October 5th vs. Carolina, his first NHL regular season game since March 11, 2000 when he suffered a serious right eye injury in a game vs. Ottawa while with Toronto. He played in all 82 games with the Rangers last season and ended the year ranked third on the team among defensemen in scoring with two goals and 21 assists for 23 points while adding 60 penalty minutes.

The 6'2", 218 lb. native of Woonsocket, Rhode Island will enter his sixth professional season in 2002-03. He played three years of high school hockey at Mt. St. Charles in Rhode Island and then played two seasons of junior hockey with Detroit of the Ontario Hockey League. Drafted by Ottawa as the first player taken overall in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, he was traded by Ottawa to the NY Islanders with Don Beaupre and Martin Straka for Damian Rhodes and Wade Redden on January 23, 1996. He turned professional with the Islanders in the 1996-97 season and won the Calder Trophy that season as the League's top rookie with a career-high 48 point season.

Berard played two-plus seasons with the Islanders, including scoring a career-high 14 goals in 1997-98, before he was traded to Toronto with a draft pick for Felix Potvin and a draft choice on January 9, 1999. He played one-plus seasons with the Maple Leafs before suffering what was thought at the time to be a career-ending eye injury on March 11, 2000 vs. Ottawa. He remained out of hockey while undergoing eye surgeries and rehabilitation before making his NHL comeback with the New York Rangers last season.

His career NHL totals entering this season are 36 goals and 145 assists for 181 points with 295 penalty minutes in 372 career games. He has also played for Team USA in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan and in the World Hockey Championships in both 1996 and 1997.

I think the B's got a hell of a bargain on Berard. The guy's a solid defenseman and they got him at a great price.

On another note, the Stars signed veteran goaltender Corey Hirsch to a one year contract. Insurance in case of injury to the top two guys?

Hey Texas, Wigs...Nothing better than hockey talk in mid-August.

I agree he's a decent pickup. At only $850K this year (02-03) and a club option of $1.3 million next (03-04) unless he scores more than 36 points. If he makes that number for total points then I think he becomes a restricted free agent for '03-'04.

For God's sake, if he gets 36+ points this year, all the guys in the NHL that have 2 good working eyes better call him for some pointers.

58 days until Bruin season :D
