I have often wondered about this.
How does one choose between:

-Giants
-Jets

-Yankees
-Mets

Also, which team would be more popular in their respected sport. Is it possible for a Met fan to cheer for the Yankees when playing Boston in the playoffs for example?

While there are obviously exceptions to the rule, it seems like the Yankee and Giants fans come from Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island and Brooklyn while the Mets and Jets fans are concentrated in Queens and Long Island. Fans from north Jersey are split for the most part.

While obviously not everyone fits into this stereotype that's pretty much the origin of the teams' fanbase.

huge yankee fanbase upstate, if you like the mets people look at you like there is something wrong with you....the fan base is closer in football, with a lean toward the G-men, but I grew up in a Giants household so i could be biased

Bookie, who you cheer for is usually a "generation" passing the torch....[ie.] If my father was a jet fan so will I.
Blackman is pretty much on target with the boroughs of NYC.Westchester,Rockland,Orange are all divided equally except for the Yankees.Southern Conn is big time Giants. That goes back to the blackout days and everyone had to drive to Conn to get the games on TV.
Diehard Yankee fans would never cheer for the Mets. But Met diehards aren't as bad and if they had to would cheer the Yanks in a WS.
Now Jets and Giants fans...ha, I can't wait till school starts.Being a Giants fan I have all my lines ready for monday morning.I'll walk into the teachers room monday morning with all the Jets "smack" talkers and with 2 pots and pans, clang them together and say..
"that was the sound of Brien's 47 yarder when it hit the crossbar...clang". ahhh I love it.
Have to think about the other missed FG hooking left in OT.
Got so much ammo after watching this game."Curtis Martin.."theres blood out there on the field and its ours"...Chad kneeling to set up a FG and loses a yard or two.
Lordie,lordie...clang.....
Now I might seem cold to some but my Gaint buddies and I take so much abuse from these Gang Green smack talkers all year. And the sad part about it is most of the things they say are true.
Hard to defend my Giants.
But the way the Jets lost leading 17-10 vs the great Steelers. Not sure if I could script it like that.
And I got 3 telephone calls during the game from my Jet boys. After the game I called them all back and hit 2 pots together..clang,clang"what the hell is that box? "The sound of Briens football hitting the crossbar"
But the last laugh isn't mine.I freak'in had Pitt -8.5.Will make it up with the Colts +2.5 today.

Headlines today in all our NY area papers
"Booted".."Kicked in the Teeth"..."Briens Song"..."Gang grief".."His fateful Foot Doug Jet Grave"..."From hero to goat"...Brien's misses are agony of the feet"..Hope goes wild left'

And whats really nice about this.It will last till July and pre-season...clang...

Basically, the blue collar folks support the Mets and Jets. The white collar types follow the Yankees and Giants.

I'll chime in on this topic since I'm a diehard Met and Giant fan from Long Island and give a little inf on my observations. I am rare in that Long Island and Queens are much more Jet country than Giant country. Westchester and Rockland the yuppies there are much more Giant fans, long Island as a whole is more blue-collar jet fans especially when you go farther away from manhattan, and of course north jersey is basically all Giant fans. Yes, the combos are almost always Giants/Yanks and Mets/Jets, I went to Giant games for years we had season tix so I bucked that, but mostly all my buddies are Jet fans. Everyones a Yankee fan it seems, I doubt you'll find many Met fans outside of LI Queens and maybe part of North Jersey, the Yankees dominate NYC, Bronx, Westchester obviously. Jets and Mets really draw from LI and Queens though no question, and in general the fan base of the Yanks obviously b/c they win and get band wagon people, and the Giants b/c of tradition is much stronger in pure numbers than the Jets and the Mets, and also b/c theyve been around longer, but good thread
