i have an article about 2009 revenue from Vegas casinos, the breakdown on how the casinos make their money are:

25% Hotel rooms and accomodations
23% Slot Machines
20% Food and Beverages
15% Table Games
14% Casino Entertainment
6% Casino Miscellaneous:0008

i'm guessing Sportsbooks fall into the misc. category:mj07:

LOL. I left off part of your quote!

Is it because they feel like you've already put your money in, so you're not going to be betting anymore?

That is the major part of it. They want you to gamble! Let me put it to you like this:

If you put $500 through a slot machine, the casino KNOWS you are risking that $500. If you bet $500 on team "A", you could easily have bet $500 on team "B", too. They have action all over the board on these games, and make a very small % on them. You ask any casino guys, and they will tell you, to a man........they would just as soon get rid of the sportsbook.

Now, with the handle being small there, compaired to the slots, you can bet they are far more willing to hand over free drinks on the slots than on the race bets.

Slots still covet close to 70% of the money taken in by the casino. Table games close to 30%. That doesn't leave much room! It should be easy to see where the freebies go from there......

If you're not getting a drink in the book.....you just might wander over to the machines and play/drink!

Gotcha. Despite the disparity in drinks to dollars spent, I see what you mean. I wasn't even factoring in the possibility that the guy who bets in the sportsbook could, you know, win! :mj07: In that case, they would be giving you free drinks to take money from them. As horrible as the odds are on slots, I'm sure they're pretty confident that they're getting that money... so let the drinks flow!

Although I have to say... if anyone is actually spending $500 on slots they need to have their head examined. :142smilie But I don't doubt for a second there are people who do spend that much, and probably even more. :scared

Good info. Jeebus, slots account for almost as much money as the rooms! :142smilie

Does anyone have Operational Expenses outlined handy?

I would bet the slots maintenance comes in lower than hotel room services so maybe a higher net profit?

Right about the slots. If used to make me mad because I had friends that were big dollar slots players and they got treated better than I did playing BJ for $50 per hand or more half the day and night. Casinos can basically control their take on slots which pretty much means they know how much of every dollar they will make over time. At least that is what I assume.

Last time my wife and I stayed at the Mirage we couldn't find a waitress let alone a drink. Played blackjack several hours a couple of times and got 1 free drink. Was hoping to get the wifey drunk for a little fun.
Nothing.

many ppl play slots because it does not even seem like your gambling.

Here is how they make money.

You got a 100 to sit down wth. After a hour
you have lost 40 bucks.

You stick in 20 and hit a 80 dollar winner

Stuff the money in again and you lose 60

After about a hour you are down to 10 bucks and you say fawk it and put the 10 in the slot machine.

Thats it. A few hours of fun. Lost some, won some

Everyone is happy. Especially the 23% casino take.

i've got stacks of free drink tickets to the venetian/palazzo sports book sitting in my desk...and i live in sd

just keep betting thru the same teller, and asking for drink tickets, esp if betting horses....and before you know it, you'll have 20-30 tickets in an afternoon......and i dont think i really bet more than 100-200 on any single event when i'm there.

someone said it before....make a 50-100 bet get about 3-4 drink tickets...not too hard....25 win/place/show on one horse race.....plus they actually will take your card and rate you at venetian on any horse bets.

I guess I like to wager at the Stratosphere. Lots of room and you do get free drinks. The odds are a little bit better down there. I don't think Vegas owes anyone free drinks for making a wager but I sure as hell am going to go to a book that I know will give them out. Worst sportsbook... Riviera and the shitty part is that I have to play there because of the national dart tourney.. No time to leave.. Definnitely will try the Venitian next time..

Back to the original question, as I have posted before, the sportsbook at the Palazzo is off the hook. It is also an Emeril Legasse restaurant but I don't know about their policy on free drinks.
Formerly, JayZ's 40/40 Club, the sportsbook at the Palazzo is by far my favorite. It is at street level directly on Las Vegas Boulevard with a nice patio that opens right on to the Strip. Pretty pricey menu but absolutely the best venue to watch the sports that I have ever seen.

Palazzo is very nice that's for sure.....and it is one of the very few books in the world that let you parlay MMA.

Downside of Palazzo bar/sportsbook is that it is very expensive. But I guess worth the money.

As I have said, it all depends on what you are looking for.

For example I like the Luxor sportsbook because they are one of the few books that have every NHL game on TV. I have watched a ton of hockey there. At most other books hockey is never on. See what I mean, all depends on what you are looking for:SIB

they are part of the venetian so the free drink tickets i get from the venetian sports book can be used at the palazzo....and i've done it as recently as a month ago.

a very cool place to watch games...but....its a different vibe....more of a trendy upscale sports bar, not a sports book feel.
