And we wonder why the extreme right wing does not like gambling. Seriously this is probably not the worst thing I have seen offered as a wager, but right now I can't think of anything worse. Let's bet on weather or not a girl was raped, BEAUTIFUL!

i might take some heat for this, but i think theres a lot more wrong with betting on little league baseball like some guys are doing than betting on a court case. to me, theres just something inherently wrong with betting on pre-teen boys athletics. at least with the kobe case, youre betting on the legal system and a case involving two adults.

gman2 any true player/gambler will side with you on that. you are 100% correct. It should start at the university level. Not even high school sports should be plays. LL is just flat out wrong.

Penguinfan, you are giving our legal system way too much credit there :nono: Whether or not Kobe will be found guilty will have nothing to do with if he actually raped the girl, you know that :brows:

Unconfirmed news story

Unconfirmed news story

I was busy today, but i thought i heard on one of the news stations that there was a report that Kobe's lawyers offered the girl somewhere in the neighborhood of $ 5,000,000 and she said no dice, she wants his ass in court.

I can't help myself -- I have to shime in one this.

There was a comment above about the supposed inappropriateness of wagering on a court case (rape trial). Frankly, I see nothing wrong with this, at all.

Why?

Our entire economic system, whether we like it or not, is based on GAMBLING. The stock market, bond markets, futures -- all are forms of gambling.

It's ironic that our society sees NOTHING inherantly wrong from stockholders profiting in the millions when 12,000 workers are laid off fromt their jobs and now must struggle to put food on the table (note: when layoffs are announced, most stck prices increse).

When Unioin Carbide released tons of poisonous fumes into the atmosphere about 15 years ago and killed 1,000 people -- the stock market and stockholders didn't give a flying f*ck about the lives that were destroyed. All they cared about were stock prices.

By comparison, gambling a few dollars on a trial with an NBA star and a psycho girl doesn't seem so disturbing.

Your dead on Nolan. But even you I would guess are against betting on Little League. I mean if we cant find enough already to bet on were just not looking very hard.

I find it hard to accept betting on a possible crime.Nolan, the girl might not be a psycho and Kobe is guilty. The girl could be exactly like that and is out to profit from Kobe.We don't know what went on.But to gamble on that is out of line.Betting the stock market or playing it is comparing apple and oranges.
Your right about Union Carbides incident in India. And companies looking out for themselves. But that has nothing to do with gambling.
And your also right about our economic system being based many times on gambling.
But betting Kobe's guilt has nothing to do with that.
The question is,where do you draw the line.
Do you think an over-under bet on how many US troops are killed dailey in Iraq.Economics is definalty a reason we are over there.
I know you wouldn't agree to that type of bet.But betting on peoples lives, prison sentences, etc are wrong.

In fact betting on the Little League world series to me is less offensive then the Kobe wager. It's ridiculous betting on 12 yrs olds.I didn't even know you could.Damn,I'd be rich if betting was allowed during the Taiwan era.

I've told this story before.Growing up on a US Army base in Italy I played in the Little league playoffs. In 1963-64 Camp Darby beat beat Vicenza[Nato's headquarters in Italy] We then went to France[the next yr DeGualle kicked all our bases out of France] and won.Beat Ramstein[I believe an Air Force base]
in Germany.
We were one game away from going to Williamsport.Pa We were beaten.I led off the game with a bunt single. That was are only hit.
But thruout our regular season the GI's always came to our games to watch.I never knew it back then but they were all betting on us.The 21st Single corp company adopted my team. Our coaches were all E-3's and 4's.I guess they were the ones making odds.
Throughout the yr they always bet. There was nothing to do on a base in Italy on a Sat afternoon. No TV,maybe AFN radio if the Russians didn't jam it. Betting on Little League games was very common.I never knew until we went to Jr High.
I know betting back then has nothing to do with betting offshore today.Just thought it was intresting.
I believe that betting on the Kobe's will really hurt all of us.Like penguin said "lets bet on the weather".
Offshore gambling is an issue in politics.I can see the anti-shore people using this. And those in the "middle" could say"maybe there right".

Nolan, I generally agree with you and enjoy your posts, however even though I appear to be in the minority this time I will stand by my above statement.

***To Penguin: We are allowed to disagree. What I find interesting about this case is that it allows me to learn something and for others (counter to my opinion) perhaps to learns something, as well. I certainly do see your point. For my follow up, please see tomorrow's Daily Report.

***To Box: You wrote......

Do you think an over-under bet on how many US troops are killed daily in Iraq.

***While I personally would NOT bet on such a thing, I have no issue with a website that puts up this proposition. Again, it's a free market and people can either bet on the prop, boycott the site because they are outraged, or whatever. Here are a couple of very interesting dilemmas on this question that I will throw back at you.
Q1: LET'S SAY A WEBSITE HAS AN O/U ON THE NUMBER OF US CASUALTIES AT 100,000 (that is, a very bad line). YOU CAN BET THE UNDER ON THIS PROP (which looks like a lock). Would you do it? Frankly, I would. My bet is not going to influence the outcome of the war, so I see nothing wrong with the wager.
Q2: LET'S SAY A WEBSITE HAS AN O/U ON THE NUMBER OF US CASULATIES AT 10 (another terrible line, this number will certainly go over). WOULD YOU BET THE OVER ON THIS PROP? Here, it is a DIFFERENT ethical dilemma because now you are betting on the prospect of MORE deaths, where it was LESS deaths in the previous scenario. I would have some trouble betting this OVER, but might do it because it's obvious the number is going over the total. The right thing to do might be to donate the win to the US Armed Forces in some form of charity, but I'll let others debate the efficacy of that last point and if it influences the greater moral question.

Economics is definalty a reason we are over there.
I know you wouldn't agree to that type of bet.

***But, I would!

But betting on peoples lives, prison sentences, etc are wrong.

***Again, markets bet (and determine) people's lives all the time. Why is a criminal trial sacred? Frankly, I don't see any issue at all betting on some show trial (I happen to suspect these charges are bogus and Bryant was framed -- but I admittedly do not know enough to draw any conclusions, yet). I'd bet that Bryant is NOT convicted. I'll also bet the accuser gets a book deal/made for TV out of this. Hmmm. Let's see, the supposed victim might PROFIT from her accusation, but it's wrong for me to make a wager on the entire ordeal. Okay, got it.

In fact betting on the Little League world series to me is less offensive then the Kobe wager. It's ridiculous betting on 12 yrs olds.I didn't even know you could.Damn,I'd be rich if betting was allowed during the Taiwan era.

***LOL. Good line. I have mixed emotions about this because minors are involved. But ESPN has already screwed up the good old fashionied integrity of the sport with that ridiculous coverage. Thanks for the healthy deabte.

Well nice post guys here is my 2 cents.

IMO true gambling should be within the sports and then of course we have our stock markets etc...

If ppl can not find enough there then they have some issues, so I do not see a need to bet on someones trial case, that is just ridiculous, go put your money on some good capping in baseball or football etc..

ALSO ppl who bet on HS games or LL is just stupid, and they should go get some counseling, I mean Christ what is next betting on the special olympics?

Go find where your values are at and be true to gambling by placing wagers on the Pro Sports, and if you can not stick with that then go find some help!

haven't had time to post much lately because of family and health issues, but i couldn't resist dropping my two cents worth here.

nolan is right, our entire culture and economy is based on wagering on the outcome of future events, no matter what they are, so the answer is yes, of course, if you believe that wagering as such should be permitted by our society, then wagering on the outcome of the kobe bryant trial should also be permitted. now, whether or not such a wager is in good taste is another question entirely. the answer is clearly that such a wager is in extemely poor taste, but one of the cornerstones of freedom of expression in this country is that it is unwise, and in some cases unconstitutional, to regulate matters of taste. it is in bad taste to permit the american nazi party to parade through a jewish neighborhood populated with holocaust survivors, but our system permits such act in order to maintain the personal freedoms for all that our founding fathers intended us to have.

remember, the ncaa believes it is in extemely poor taste to bet on college athletics.

btw, 6-5 is dead on - acquittal is a lead pipe lock. and box, as i understand the wager, you're not betting on the occurence of a possible crime, you're betting on the outcome of the trial - two completely different matters.

Loophole,

Agree completely. As a side note, in 1922 when Congress approved the first agricultural futures exchanges some of the detractors said they were legalising ?corn gambling?. Sport, current events and legal issues are every bit as important to the US as agriculture is now (as a % of GNP) so why cant people trade these matters in a similar way?

At the risk of being slammed for promoting our business here, these are just a selection of lines that are available on our exchange.

Kobe Bryant Case to go to Trial (lines open since July)
Kobe Bryant to be Found Guilty (lines open since July)
Next Supreme Court Justice to Leave Bench
Saddam Hussein Conclusion
Osama Bin Laden Conclusion
Security Alert Level August 2003
Security Alert Level September 2003
Security Alert Level December 2003
Iraq and Weapons of Mass Destruction
Admiral Poindexter to remain on DARPA payroll by Aug 31

thanks for the concurrence, tradesports. actually, i was jumping back in to be the first to slam you for posting the promotional response in this thread. fortunately, i had enough foresight to check and see that you are a new sponsor to madjack's, which by me makes your input both appropriate and welcome. here's hoping that you do well by your sponsorship, which i'm sure you will.

Short sellers, long sellers, day traders what have you all of them in this economy have a freaking FIELD DAY in the markets when there is even a rumor of layoffs at a big company. A few years back when AOL annouced like 18,000 layoffs the day traders went ballistic. I forget the number of trades but it was one of the highest in history at the time. These a-holes (who the markets welcome and companies open their doors to so they can conduct their business) are betting on the fact that 18,000 people are about to have their lives RUINED. I welcome the fact I have a new perspective on this now, but these were 18,000 mid level folks cast out into the worst job market in the past 20 years.

I ask you - how is betting on 18,000 people having their lives ruined any better or worse than betting on some attention-starved, mentally unstable kook who slept with an overpaid, overpampered diva sports star or betting on whether some dumbass 11 year old doesnt cough up a line drive?

Was there a crime involved in one and not the other? Possibly, we dont know. In my book it is almost irrelevant. People who "bet" by short selling MCI and Enron, do you look upon them any worse? The crimes committed by jackasses like Kenneth Lay in my book are far worse considering the damage he did to the economy in general, the energy industry not to mention the 10s of thousands of employees he has.

Now I'm not saying I would bet on Kobe or any of these other things for that matter (unless it was a dog with reallllly good EV:D) but thats how I feel on the matter. If the country/public/Congress/president/everyoneelse embraces one form of gambling (daytraders and stock sellers), it has to embrace it all. End of story. Anything else is pure hypocrisy.
