Similiar Situation

Similiar Situation

Nick's story reminds me of a similiar situation I was in is St. Maarten about 7 years ago... it was college hoops season, so I dropped by the local casino that had a sportsbook....

They posted a line of Ohio State -8, who was playing Iowa at home that night... this was back when Ohio State was very, very bad... I knew IA should have been favored in that game.... I asked the clerk at the counter about the line, and he assured me it was correct...

Still having my doubts, I drove across the island to the only place I could find a USA Today - checked out the daily line - and sure enough, it listed Iowa -8 - so the book had the lines backwards..

Headed back to the sportsbook and asked for the manager of the sportsbook. I again pointed out the error, but his response was "Oh, no sir - we get our lines direct from Vegas - I am positive my line is correct". I asked him how large of a wager he'd taken on the game (it was 2K), so given that I had done all I could to tell him, I made the wager (praying that there wasn't something weird going on, like the whole starting 5 for Iowa being suspended or something like that)

So, I had Iowa +8, and they ended up winning outright by 15 or so. The next day I stopped to get my $$$, and the manager was hopping mad! I asked for my $$$ - he said "You knew the line was wrong" - I told him that I REPEATEDLY pointed that out to him - and he said I could bet it anyway.

Basically, he agreed to pay me since Iowa covered the "correct" line anyway... but I get the feeling that if they would not have covered the -8, I would not have seen my money... and being in a foreign country, I don't think there was much I could have done about it....

After I got my money, I did give him about 3K in action on various games that evening as a "thank you"....

Just thought I'd share my experience ;)

OMG, this ended up being an odd situation.

Some of these huge favs, including a -300 fave, lost outright or drew so if I would have bet the board of wrongly priced favs acting as dogs I would have gotten killed.

As far as the Dogs vs. Eddie thing, I too disagree with Dogs on most stuff but in this case I don't find it being a tattle tale. I did inform them via email but got no response. Reason was not so much for the reward (though one book once did reward me with a $25 free wager when I did this some time ago) but because one of the games I legitimately wanted to bet at the real price and I didn't want them to cancel my bet or do anything screwy if I made the bet at +300 instead of -138.

As a side note, my former producer used to post here as Rockpyle25 and he used to bet bad lines all the time and even posted here once ticked off that the book refused to honor the bets. I kept telling him that the book would catch up to him and then it kind of made me laugh when he posted here and instead of sympathy people ripped him a new one for trying to cheat the book. Good luck all.

Eddie This may come as a shock to you but I do not consider most of the linesmakers I have dealt with over the years as an enemy but many have become friends.

Try to make a few(friends) and you'll understand where I am coming from.;)

Only enemy is this biz is fellow players not the linesmakers.

In any case the word "enemy" may not be the right way to state the conjecture.

Recently I placed a wager with a local on an over in a Yankees game. The local prefers to leave his lines on an answering machine at which time you leave your wager. He likes to do this as it then has a record and time stamp of the wager. I am friends with the guy and have voiced my displeasure with the machine system. He assured me that it is "foolproof" !!! His words. He had the line at 7 when it should clearly have been ten and a half or eleven. I called him at home to discuss it and he stated, "I told you to use the machine"! I therefore placed a max wager of $2000 on the over in the Yankees game of 7. In the fifth inning the score was already 5-4 Yanks. This guy calls me at work and tells me that he is not going to honor the wager due to the mistake. Since he is a friend of mine I calmly assure him I will not be booking any more bets through him and since I generally have about 45 -60 friends a day wager through him, he gets pissed. Tells me it was a mistake and etc... I told him I called you and gave you warning and then you wait until the middle of the fifth to call me to try to back out , heres an idea, how about tomorrow I call you in the middle of the fifth on any game and place my wager according to opening lines. I also offered to let him out of the game at $1500 my way he refused. He paid, it was his fault, hazard of the trade. I no longer book with him though. What everyone seems to forget is that this is a business and you are responsible for the proper operation of your business...NOT the consumer.
