Home loans for illegal aliens?!

August 29, 2003

The American dream of home ownership, complete with the white picket fence, is alive and well for those who break our laws and break down our fences to get in.

Last week, The Washington Post published a rosy front-page tale headlined, "Illegal Immigrants Buy Into Homeowning Dream." The article detailed how illegal aliens in the Washington, D.C., area are successfully hooking up with cunning mortgage brokers and complicit lenders to secure home loans. Despite federal laws making it illegal to violate the borders, overstay visas, and recruit, harbor and encourage illegal aliens, the Post notes that the illegal alien home loan schemes are "legal."

Here we are, nearly two years after the September 11 terrorist attacks underscored the need for consistent immigration law enforcement, and the lesson continues to be ignored in the nation's capital.

The Post's heart-warming story began:

"Gerardo Cabrera fell in love with the house immediately. There was the bay window in the living room, the fireplace in the den, and -- most enchanting to a man raised amid the concrete of Mexico City -- the woods in the back yard. And so the auto mechanic and his wife, a secretary, decided to pay $200,000 for their own piece of suburban Gaithersburg, a classic tale of immigrants achieving the American dream. Except for one detail: At the time, they were in the United States illegally."

While law-abiding homebuyers must supply airtight proof of identity, legal residence and a Social Security number to lenders, illegal alien purchasers such as Cabrera (a visa overstayer who recently received a green card) need only supply a "taxpayer identification number" (TIN) issued by the Internal Revenue Service. No criminal background check is required before applying for a TIN, which many banks now accept from illegal alien customers as a primary form of identification.

Cabrera's broker, Alma Preciado of Metropolitan Financial Services in Silver Spring, told the Post that about 10 percent of her mainly Latino clientele qualify for home loans using a TIN instead of a Social Security number.

That's just the tip of the illegal alien homeowners' iceberg. The Post failed to note that Federal Housing Administration-approved loans through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development do not require lenders to obtain proof of citizenship or legal permanent residence. These FHA/HUD programs, primarily targeting minorities and first-time homebuyers, are federally insured and require minimal down payments.

A 25-year veteran of the mortgage industry in California confided to me recently: "It boggles the mind to think how many illegal aliens are homeowners in this country thanks to these programs, all fully insured by our government. Because of fear of lawsuits for discrimination I can also tell you that a lender may have a borrower who speaks little or no English who claims to be either a citizen or resident alien and it will not be questioned nor any proof required. Since FHA does not require any such documentation, a lender cannot cite their regulations as a basis for the request as they can on conventional loans."

Another easy avenue to home ownership is through the use of bogus Social Security cards. Moneylenders have no access to a verification system to check Social Security numbers before approving loans. A Department of Homeland Security investigator informs me that an ongoing federal probe of FHA/HUD-backed loans found that "a staggering number were approved to persons with false Social Security numbers." The Denver metro area alone accounted for 20,000 to 40,000 of the FHA-approved loans for suspected illegal aliens. "Even if a small percentage of the loans were foreclosed, HUD could be bankrupted," the homeland security official said.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. General Accounting Office told me this week that the agency's office of special investigations plans to report on the results of the probe later this fall. But "considering the size of Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston, and other large cities throughout the United States known to be inundated with illegal aliens," says my source, "I don't think the federal government is willing to expose this problem for financial reasons as well as for fear of political repercussions."

America: Still the world's home sweet illegal alien home.

Hard to imagine anything more yellow than trying to make the connection between illegal aliens looking for a better life and September 11th. Absolutely revolting and whatever tabloid published this writing should be ashamed of themselves.

Who would do the job if they didn't come? To be honest these people get screwed over to an amazing degree. Many of these companies that knowingly hire illegals go ahead and claim witholdings on fake social security which in the end helps prop up our social security funds. Oh the freaking irony! On a whole it is a very frustrating issue but please don't act like all these illegals are common criminals. If you want to be pissed at anyone why don't you ask your senator/congressman to look into the corrupt Border Patrol Agency. Nah, people wouldn't be getting paid off by the smugglers would they???

I don't think they are making a connection to the bombings and these people. They are exposing the fact that the government is pouring millions of dollars into our Homeland Security Department, along with all the restrictions and "Patriot Act" about foreigners within our borders and moving around unnoticed and unmonitored and how desparately we need to be able to keep tabs on people with expired visas and things...

and those same people are able to walk down the street and buy a house without question.

Agree Marine. And I take the wife for fingerprinting in two weeks as she is going thru the process for citizenship. I had to jump thru flaming hoops 14 years ago to bring her to the states and I did not mind as I believe Immigration should be by the rules.

What about the Illegals selling flowers on the corner? They are not hurting anyone- right? Except for the 13 year old girl raped by the teenager here Illegally. Guess he'll get free medical and dental in prison, not to mention that what 25-40% of the CA prison population are Illegal. This is not sterotyping, but bringing to light facts that have occurred. Plenty of ppl to speak for him, but who speaks for his victim?

Who would do the job or what about exploiting them? Well I'm not abusing them. Maybe we should take steps to ensure they are not put into those situations, like controlling our borders. Same old lame excuse. I moved here in '86 and everyone-everyone, except yours truly, had paid $40/ month or more for gardeners and/or ppl to mow their lawn. I couldn't believe how lazy ppl were. How many americans take the easy way out or refuse to work? I do blame ourselves and post this for information, but I'm not in that category. I bring this up for different view points, but JT the Border guards are hampered by the Politicians and Bureaucrats.

And just today Gray Davis was on the radio expressing his intentions to sign into law the DL for Illegal Aliens. His reasoning- they are here anyway so at least this way they can be motivated to get insurance and not run away from accidents- besides the DMV will have their address on file. UHH,UHHH,UHHH Water-Water--- F*CK!!! DON"T EVEN GO THERE! OMFG- Davis is that bad!

And we'll not even touch the subject of how Mexico treats their Illegal Aliens. All posts/views welcome, (at least most are), BUT I still am not swayed. The author by the way is the daughter of Legal Immigrants.

As I said "Change the Law" Chan-not my real name-man

Sheez I love the left. Whine at whatever fits the situation.
If it involves economic conditions, hollar about nobady can find a job and employment. If it illegal immigrants "who will work all these avalable jobs. WHICH IS IT?

"Many of these companies that knowingly hire illegals go ahead and claim witholdings on fake social security which in the end helps prop up our social security funds"

From what source do you get above data from. I'd like to read it.
Pleae post link.

"Oh the freaking irony! On a whole it is a very frustrating issue but please don't act like all these illegals are common criminals."

Its a crime to be in U.S. illegally whether the people are common or uncommon. Of course there are some places that would like to punish crimes by awarding drivers licenses.

Why do you think they have these laws?
I wouldn't care if your policies were confined to your state, but as you can see, other states that do not share your views have to share the conseqeunces of them.
Some folks still like to speak english and be able to watch programs on tv without an interpretor.

since when do you need people that break the law

since when do you need people that break the law

to mow your lawn and clean your house.....because it saves some rich, lazy pr-cks a couple dollars?....

anybody that doesn`t see the burgeoning problem of illegal`s,the total disregard of our immigration laws, and the many potential problems the situation represents, just doesn`t want to see them...

change the laws...it`s gonna happen anyway....the hispanic vote is becoming very powerful....and that`s great....that`s the american way....

until then, everything humanly possible should be done to protect the integrity of our borders.....

a slap in the face to many that wait years to come here legally....

change the laws....

One would think that someone who had to endure the arduous task of becoming a legal immigrant would be in favor of breaking down the borders to prevent others from having to endure what they had to endure rather than selfishly wanting to force others to endure as much hardship as possible. But then again, people are selfish by nature when it comes to certain things.

Of everything said in this thread, the fact remains that it is insulting and disgraceful to use the memory of 9/11 to try to forward the agenda of keeping illegal immigrants from buying homes. That is what this lowlife author did and by reprinting it you are implicitly endorsing this type of yellow journalism.

Marine, I have to disagree with you because the article implies that 9/11 was somehow linked to lax immigration enforcement. That is simply an untrue statement. There were many factors that aligned to cause 9/11 but lax immigration enforcement was a miniscule contributor if it was even a contributor at all.

I think the bottom line in the vast majority of arguments about Illegal Immigration is that people will want whatever is convenient to them. I'd wager that very few, if any, of you actually do research before you buy a domestic product or service to make sure the business that produces it does not have illegals working somewhere along the line. Given the choice, most people will go with the cheaper option and simply bury their heads in the sand rather than find out that what they are buying would cost a heck of a lot more if the business selling it were forced to eschew the work of illegals. Personally, I don't find those anything wrong with those actions until those people start sounding off about border enforcement.

people entering this country are committing a crime. they should not be able to get any benefits this country has to offer. the people who are doing the finagling(sp?) should be either fined or thrown in jail. i can't imagine any bank offering a loan to an illegal if they knew the story about how the applicants entered our country.

my wife took the necessary steps to become a citizen, others should do the same.

imo, an illegal alien should be thrown out of this country & let them try to do it the correct way.

all due respect...that`s your assumption.....not fact....and not my opinion...

Because the IDs used by the hijackers were phony, we cannot know who they really were or who they really worked for. But what is apparent is that those who planned the hijackings and the 9/11 attacks went out of their way to leave plenty of clues pointing to citizens of middle eastern Arab nations......

nick,we may never know for sure whether the failure of our immigration service shoulders part of the blame for 9-11.....

You are really wrong about me being selfish Nick- Plus I'm not the one attacking those who differ w/my views. It was difficult for me because I had to ensure the wife would not become a ward of the state. Too bad you couldn't see what we went thru@ Fresno getting her green card. We got there@ 0500 and waited til the office opened@ 0700. By 1400 hrs we were still waiting and SAW Mexicans trading off the wait -in-line numbers, i.e., a person who got there in the early am would wait 3-4 hours and give the card to a friend who just arrived and leave-although we were there before the original person even got a number. Ppl are taking advantage on BOTH SIDES.
As it stands- It is against the law to be here Illegally whether you like it or not. That is the law, but don't worry cause after the driver's licenses are issued the Illegals will begin voting and we know how tolerant they will be of others not to their liking. And by the by Nick as far as reduced tuition for Illegal Aliens- 60 some% who use this are Asian, not Hispanic. Interesting to say the least.
Then again maybe I am selfish- keep posting your free picks-thanx

Chanman I can relate to your experience.

Been working on K1 visa for over a year and finally got it approved in July but as you know thereare two more step that may take up to a year.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Receipt Number: src030835XXXX

Application Type: I129F, PETITION FOR FIANCE(E)

Current Status:

This case has been approved. On July 15, 2003, an approval notice was mailed. If 14 days have passed and you have not received this notice, you may wish to verify or update your address. To update your address, please speak to an Immigration Information Officer during business hours
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Now I could be angry that it now takes much longer since 911 because of all backround checks but I am elated they have finally taken these steps to screen undisireables.
Now there are correct ways to do things and necessary screening processes or you can let them flock in illegally as some would like.
-and on your heading to Thailand when the balance swings I will be on a plane right behind you.--and do not think we will be alone.
