Vanished into vortex
My brother-in-law who just got a new Buick Rondesvouz that came with a year of On-Star free drove up here to visit us from Florida and got a bit lost once he got close to here, we weren't home so he pulled off the highway exit and stopped in a Wal-Mart parking lot and pushed the On-Star button to see if they could help. He gave them my address and told them he was still on rt 60 to make it easy, the On-Star guy says "actually we don't show you on rt60, we show you in a parking lot at 2501 west state street" Believe me when I tell you he was less than 300 yards from the highway and they could tell the difference! I don't know where the On-Star people are, but unless they were in the back seat that is pretty friggin amazing if you ask me. They gave him directions and he got here before we got back from the video store.

If you don't think big brother is watching, you better think again!

its not that new. Its the global positioning system done by satelite. Its been around almost 2 years.

They just have a grid map in front of them and they can hone right in on you. A light comes on to show them where the vehicle is.

Its still fairly expensive. If car is stolen the thief has no chance but jail time.

many of the new cellphones equipped with Emergency 911 chips will have the same GPS technology...

and within 7-10 years everything you buy will have a microchip on it instead of a barcode- in theory they could be tracked all the way home with you- privacy groups are already in a tizzy over this

I knew it wasn't really that new, but to be able to track you within a few hundred yards is pretty incredible, that's some technology.

S-Love, I can see where it would be useful to have a chip like that in your cell-phone, just hope the wife never gets hold of this technology.

Just an FYI: Prior to May 2000, there were two GPS signals from space. One for military use (which was accurate to within 6 meters) and one for civilian use (accurate to within 100 meters I think). Around May 2000, Clinton mandated that the Dept of Defense stop degrading the civilian signal and now all GPS receivers are supposed to be accurate to within about 6-10 meters.

Imagine if parents had the capability to implant tiny microchips with GPS technology into their kid's shoes. How many missing children would be found? If the govt did it, it would sound like a sci-fi movie.

Mama,

Can't watch the Bears game (that's not true, it's as interesting as a trainwreck), but wanted to say congrats on your Infinity contest record.

Do you have the money spent, yet?

So Cal
On Star is an amazing feature. In addition to the directions, if you get the concierge service they will make reservations for you at restaurants and the like.
