ncsu update: North Carolina State wide receiver Richard Washington has been suspended indefinitelyfor violating unspecified team rules, coach Chuck Amato said Tuesday....from statefans

from gopack:
Tar Heels visit Carter-Finley Stadium for 2 p.m. contest on Saturday.

NORTH CAROLINA (0-3) at NC STATE (2-2)

DATE: Saturday, September 27, 2003

TIME: Kickoff: 2:00 p.m. (EDT) Carter-Finley Stadium, Raleigh, NC (53,800)

RADIO: Wolfpack Radio Network AIRTIME: 1:00 p.m.. (EDT)

TELEVISION: Time Warner Cable Pay Per View (Portions of North Carolina only).

OPPONENT---- Wisconsin, a proponent of smash-mouth football, was without its best tailback on Saturday, but it didn't hinder the Badgers much. Brooker Stanley, subbing for an injured Anthony Davis, ran for 119 yards and three touchdowns as Wisconsin defeated the Tar Heels 38-27.

The game was not quite as close as the final score indicated as UNC backup quarterback, C. J. Stephens, threw a 26-yard desperation touchdown pass to Jesse Holley on the game's final play despite seven defenders in the end zone.

Wisconsin rolled up 402 yards of total offense, but the Badgers had to drive only a combined total of 92 yards to score 24 of their 38 points. A first-quarter fumble by freshman Ronnie McGill at the Carolina three and two short fields after poor punts allowed Wisconsin touchdown drives of three, 46 and 35 yards.

Stanley carried the ball 28 times and scored on runs of five, one and two yards as the Badgers (3-1) rebounded from last week's 23-5 loss to Nevada-Las Vegas. Swayne Smith added 75 yards rushing on 15 attempts for UW. Jacque Lewis was Carolina's leading rusher, notching 82 yards on six carries, including a 56-yarder.

Badgers quarterback, Jim Sorgi, completed 12-of-20 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns but tossed two interceptions, including one in the end zone.

Special teams helped UNC stay in the game as the Tar Heels racked up 246 return yards. Carolina stunned Wisconsin when Michael Waddell returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. He was also setting sail in the third quarter to notch a potential major punt return before falling untouched to the ground with a sprained ankle. After Waddell left the game, freshman Mike Mason nearly added another touchdown-scoring return for the Tar Heels with 2:23 remaining. An illegal block, however, called the play back.

The Badgers took the lead for good, 21-14, on Sorgi's 44-yard TD pass to Lee Evans with 12 minutes left in the first half. Dan Orner's 25-yard field goal pulled the Tar Heels within 21-17 at the intermission, but UW answered on Stanley's five-yard TD run with 8:48 left in the third.

Wisconsin's final scores in the fourth quarter came on Sorgi's 17-yard TD pass to Darrin Charles and Mike Allen's 20-yard field goal with 1:30 remaining. Defensive back Jim Leonhard's 54-yard interception return set up the field goal.

UNC quarterback Darian Durant provided one of UW's toughest challenges to date. Durant was ranked 18th nationally in total offense before Saturday, but struggled to reach his normal numbers under the Badgers' pressure. Against Syracuse, Durant led his team with 68 yards rushing, but the Badgers allowed him only seven. His 300-plus passing performance against the Orangemen dwindled to 139 yards (12 of 24) against UW.

Carolina is averaging nearly 25 points and 370 yards a game, but has turned the ball over 8 times and is converting only 26 percent of its third down opportunities. Durant accounts for a great deal of UNC's offense. He has completed 62 percent of his passes for 600 yards and 4 touchdowns and is also the team's leading rusher with 97 yards on 29 attempts and 2 TDs.

Durant's top passing targets are Jarwarski Pollock (5-8, 170, Jr.) with 23 catches for 233 yards and a touchdown; Lewis (5-10, 197, Jr.) with 10 receptions for 74 yards and Brandon Russell (5-11, 190, Sr.) who has 8 catches for 142 yards and a TD. The offensive line, which has allowed only 4 sacks, is junior and senior dominated with right guard, Jeb Terry (6-6, 308, Sr.), and Jason Brown (6-3, 318) best of the bunch. Brown's brother, Lunsford Brown Jr., 27, was killed in Iraq last week on military duty. However, the junior center rejoined the UNC team on Tuesday and is expected to play against NC State.

Defensively, Carolina is a work in progress. The Tar Heels showed some improvement against Wisconsin, but are allowing 41 points and close to 500 yards a game. UNC has had a tough time stopping the run, surrendering a whopping 225 rushing yards a game and 10 rushing TDs. With those kind of numbers, it's no surprise that Tar Heel safeties, Dexter Reid (6-0, 200, Sr.) and Mahlon Carey (6-0, 211, So) are the team's leading tacklers, combining for more than one-fourth of UNC's total stops. Carey leads the team with two interceptions.

The linebackers are young with the exception of Clay Roberson (6-1, 231, Sr.). In fact, freshman linebackers Larry Edwards and Fred Sparkman played at least one series each against Wisconsin as coach John Bunting and staff continue to give selected members of a highly regarded freshman class on-the-job training.

With the injury to Waddell, Lionell Green (6-1, 180, Jr.) is listed as the Heels starter at cornerback along with Cedrick Holt (5-11, 176, So.). Green was one of the nation's top junior college players in 2002.

While the Tar Heels have a dangerous return game, they are allowing opponents an average of 23 yards per kickoff return. Their punt coverage has been solid (7.5 ypr.), but UNC's John Lafferty is punting for an average of only 36 yards. Don't be surprised if redshirt freshman David Wooldridge, who has punted once for 61 yards, sees more action against NC State. Senior kicker Dan Orner (5-8, 170) has a very strong leg and great range. He has made 4-7 field goals this season with a long of 51 yards. Orner is 2-4 from beyond 40 yards.

INJURIES--NC State: WR Andy Bertrand-Probable, groin; OT Chris Colmer-Doubtful, brachial plexus; WR Sterling Hicks-Out, knee; TB T.A. McLendon-Questionable; hamstring. North Carolina:CB Michael Waddell-No Report, right ankle sprain; TB Jacque Lewis-No report, sprained left foot; OT Brian Chacos-No report, sprained left ankle; LB Victor Worsley-No report, concussion; TE Bobby Blizzard-No report, viral infection.

Best of luck this week, TOY!

Hope you do well with that totals play. I see Ole Miss winning something like 42-21, which would put it a bit under. Of course, it could be 42-28, which covers. Maybe the latter is more likely. Hmm, maybe I should take it myself:)

Anyway, hope you have a great weekend!

Come to think of it, TT won last year's game 42-28. Yes, it would be fitting if Ole Miss won by the same score, and then the over would definitely cover. Better get me a piece of that action!

Couple quick questions about your WolfPack. I took them before the season started on a prop play. I played the over for team wins at 8 1/2. I am pretty sure they will win 9 games, any thoughts on that.

Also do you know Elliot Avent, the nc st baseball coach. I played 1 year of baseball for him at new mexico st. He used to party like a rock star.

anyway just figured i ask, good luck saturday and bang em.
