IOWA CITY - A University of Northern Iowa wrestler has been convicted in a sexual assault that happened during a booze-fueled party here last year.
District Court Judge Denver Dillard found Jordan Robert Holm, 21, guilty of third-degree sexual assault after Holm waived his right to a jury trial.
The written verdict was handed down Aug. 28 after the July trial. Sentencing is set for Sept. 12.
Holm, a two-time high school state champion from Northfield, Minn., wrestled for the Panthers as recently as March ? seven months after he was arrested in Iowa City.
UNI media relations officials said today that Holm's status with the university will be determined after the judicial process is completed.
The university has no official comment on the matter.
According to court records, a woman told police she awoke to find Holm performing a sex act on her after she fell asleep during a party at an East Market Street apartment following the Iowa vs. Iowa State football game in September 14, 2002.
Holm pleaded innocent and took the stand in his own defense during the trial.
The woman, who didn't know Holm, told the court she and her boyfriend were at the party and wandered off to an upstairs bedroom for sex as the reveling began to wind down.
After sex, they fell asleep, and she later woke up to what she thought was her boyfriend performing oral sex on her. She realized it wasn't him when she touched his head and noticed it was someone else.
She then noticed her boyfriend was still sleeping next to her.
The attacker fled the room when she started screaming, the woman said.
Other witnesses said they saw Holm run downstairs pulling down his pants and heard the screams.
Holm was detained by partygoers and told them nothing happened, witnesses said.
Prosecutor Victoria Dominguez introduced evidence that authorities found DNA that was "consistent" with Holm on the woman's body.
On the stand, Holm denied any sexual contact with the woman.
He said he went upstairs to find a place to sleep and found only one bedroom door unlocked. Two people were in the bed, so he laid down on the floor but fled the room when the woman woke up masturbating and began kicking him.
He told the court he believed the victim was embarrassed he caught her.
The defense also introduced an expert to counter the state's DNA evidence.
Holy Sh*t! F*cked up, perform Oral Sex on a strange girl sleeping beside her boyfriend after a wild party and having your pants around your ankles to boot. Man Iowa hasn't changed one bit.
P.S.- Remember to Lock Your Doors @ the SB Party. Literally and figuratively tasteless I know, I know.
