Responding to Muckler's ultimatum, Walsh released the following statement from Havlat on Thursday morning:

"On Tuesday at my request, my agents arranged a face-to-face meeting with the Ottawa Senators management in the hope of completing a contract so that I might join my teammates for the start of the season," the statement read. "It was made clear to me by the Senators' management during this meeting, based on their offer and other comments, they are not prepared to pay me anywhere near what other players with similar statistics are being paid around the league.

"I made a significant move to get a contract completed before opening night. In fact, the offer I submitted to the Senators would make me the fifth-highest paid forward and the ninth-highest paid player on the team. I was given an ultimatum to sign a contract far below the league's average salary which I cannot accept. I am not trying to establish a new market.

"I simply want to receive what I believe I am worth within the current market place as established by Philadelphia's Simon Gagne and Tampa Bay's Brad Richards. I am terribly disappointed by the position of the Senators and their negotiating tactics. I am returning to the Czech Republic."

he's absolutely worth the coin he's asking for. it is a very strange story if you ask me. you would think they would want to keep the 22 yr old developing players happy.

oh well, he would look good in a Bruins sweater :)

I heard from Canadian TV, TSN, that he was offered 1.35 million but was asking 1.975 million....that kid is a great player...I'm sure Horns can add more to this with his Ottawa contacts.

An ultimatum, plus a slap in the face. Sometimes you just gotta stick up for yourself. I don't blame him.

The talk here is they win the cup with or without him.I don't agree.don't know what the Senators are trying to prove. They got a surprise when he told them to stick their take it or leave it deal. They had no problem paying Redden the moon and now play hardball with Havlat.Hope he doesn't give in

Guys,

I actually talked to Marty two days ago. He seemed very optimistic at the time. Now with this I see him eventually coming back like Rachunek last year once Rachunek has no choice as the team was loaded on D. If the Sens get off to a great start Marty will come back at a much lower price. If the Sens get off to an average start then the Sens give in to his demands. He wants to play so badly but he will stick to his guns. The guy is a gamebreaker and he is only entering his 4th season. He is only going to get better. He makes their right side the best in the league with Hossa and Alfreddson. Those three are tough to defend as no team can roll out 3 pairs of D to neutralize. One guy will always have a big night.

As for comparing Havlat to Redden in terms of giving Redden what he wanted, they are two totally different cases. Redden is a horse on defense and is leader on the ice and possibly is the best defenseman at making that first pass out of the zone. He logs important minutes on both the PP and PK. Havlat is a 3rd liner believe it or not on this team and if he was a 1st liner or their best defenseman this would not be occurring. You take Redden out of the line-up and it hurts the flow of the team big time. You take Havlat out of the line-up and they don't miss a beat.

I really don't believe he left for Europe. He will be back by the end of October.

Hope this helps.

I'm kind of new to the board. I got the impression right away that you obviously have great contacts inside the organization. For someone new like myself do u mind mentioning how you are so close to the team? Are you in the media? If this is out of line i apologize.

Robbo - I know alot of the players quite well. I go back to '93 when the Sens drafted Alex Daigle. I am still very close friends with him. When the Wild come to town I will hang out with him just like I did last year in Ott when Pitt came to town. I got to know Reds(Wade) very well when he came to town as well 6-7 years ago. Anyways, I am not about to brag or anything. They are all great guys. Get my e-mail from Jack and I can fill you in on the media thing. Many on the forum know what I do. I just don't want to say too much on the media thing. Thanks,
