I dont want to post the link because I am not sure if I am allowed, but in a match between Kafelnikov and Vicente someone plopped about 6 figures on Vicente and hit it apparantly someone knew about Kafelnikov being injured. ATP is investigating it as they think that a pro tennis player made the bet through some other people. Anyone hear anything?

Tennis has been open to manipulation for many years. Most books have a maximum wager per client per match. It is impossible to get six figures down on any one match by one person unless the sportsbook allow this person and a few others to mark their card so they can lay the bet off and have more on for themselves.

It is a known fact that players wager on games, but not on ones they are competing in. I am not saying any foul play was happening here is this game.

In the dressing room, often players will say they feel unwell, they're tired, they're going home tomorrow and the flights booked. Players, managers and members of the ATP are all privy to this information. Players have been known to jack in games, but no more so than in any other sport.

Look at it like this. We have the main tour with the top 32 or 64 players taking part plus qualifiers and guest players, these are usually players from the country that are staging the event. Now explain to me and anyone else, how does a pro earn a living when they are ranked 250 in the world. They're sponsorship is small because they get very little exposure, they compete on the challenger tour or even on a lesser status tour. The prise money is poor on these events so these are the guys who are betting in games so they can earn a living. Perhaps they win an invite to a main tour event and happen to meet a qualifier in the premilary rounds. The match is between two equal standard players, How do you know that one guy doesn't get his family, friends, agents, manager to place numerous bets on him to lose (or perhaps to win). Easier to bet in set betting as odds are higher to lose in two straight than to bet to lose the game.

When money is involved, skullduggery will always be present. How do we know that Kafelnikov didn't tell someone that is close to him that he was carring an injury that will prevent him from winning whilst out on the practice court. That friend tells his manager who tells someone else and within 15 minutes we have a snowball effect and most players and officials at the tournament know. Now keep multiplying that and you can see the effect. This is not cheating, the guy goes out to do his best but will not try to run down every shot or perhaps have all his weapons because of this injury and further aggrivation may result in permant injury which forces them to miss a month or so and that means loss of prise money and appearence money as well as losing ranking points.

Most players on the tour are playing with numerous injuries but are controllable by the many excellant physio's that the tour brings with them. Once the season winds down in November / December and restarts early following year, this is the time used to heal and treat those nagging aches, pains and what ever else.
