most casual fans will pull for florida because they are everything the yankees arent. many will cry that the yanks buy their titles.

those people that are pulling for the marlins will be supporting a team that made the most BLATANT purchase of a world series in baseball history.

lets revisit 1997 again.

marlins flat out bought the title.

so although its nice to see the marlins do it under the radar this year and with tough, fiesty young players- its not like the marlins are immune to the "buying a championship" criticism, nor are they a franchise that exemplifies "everything thats right and pure about baseball"

this is gonna be an excellent series. realistically, yanks probably gonna be too powerful for them but will go down fighting (a la padres vs yanks in world series half decade ago)

lets enjoy it

The franchise as a whole isn't, but this team is. This team has nothing in common with their 1997 counterparts except for a stadium and logo. This World Series is Good vs. Evil.

Forgot to mention.... you are dead right about the '97 Marlins. I was 100 percent for the Indians in that series for the same reason I hope and pray the Yankees fall.

for the first few years after that series, i was still seething that the tribe lost to the freakin florida marlins. that that was our/cleveland's best shot to finally get a title. but looking back on it now, that team florida bought/assembled/put together (or instert other adjective of choice), that team was unreal. all-stars all over the place. not surprising florida pulled that one out. but still stings, seeing how cleveland led going into the 9th and couldnt close it out.

enjoy the world series bud. should be an excellent one. personally, im not pulling for anyone but your points are very valid. florida definitely a different team than 97

It's been argued a million times but as a Yankee fan I'll say it again. You see the core of guys that carry the team on their back...they are all home grown products or great scouting pick ups. Rivera, Posada, Jeter, Bernie, Pettite. These guys have been the nucleus when this run started in 96. Sure, the Yanks spend more money than anyone, and pick up guys like Mussina, Clemens, Matsui etc. But without that core of guys they brought up and didn't buy from elsewhere, they wouldn't be anything.

The second key is that the people the Yanks pick up to make the run usually pay off, and that is a testament to Brian Cashman and the people upstairs. Every team in post-season contention picks up guys to make the playoff run. I'd like you to name 1 team who is as good at sifting through the crap to find the guys to come thru as well as the Yankees do. And one last thing: Torre. The final piece of the puzzle, yanks didn't have to buy him to come over.

Hey Boston fans, choke choke

very cogent post.
people hate to admit it, but the yanks spend money WISELY. the yanks spend money on guys like mussina, where mets spend it on a guy like glavine. yanks spend on giambi, mets spend it on burnitz and mo vaughn. yanks simply spend wisely

Exactly gman.

No Yankee fan can defend the amount of money we spend. Yes, it gives them an unfair advantage, without a doubt. But there are other teams that try to spend big bucks and it backfires, so the Yankees have to get some credit for the winning.
