WASHINGTON CAPITALS (1-2-1-0) AT DALLAS STARS (2-2-0-0), 8:30 p.m. ------------------------------------------------------------------
(Sports Network) - The Dallas Stars try to halt a two-game losing streak tonight when they welcome the Washington Capitals to AmericanAirlines Center.
Since opening the season with victories over Anaheim and Nashville, Dallas has been defeated by both Buffalo and Boston. On Wednesday, the Stars dropped a 2-0 match to the Bruins in the opener of a four-game homestand.
Marty Turco made just 11 saves for Dallas, which outshot the Bruins, 27-13. The Stars hit the post four times -- twice by center Jason Arnott -- and failed to capitalize on six power plays.
The Stars also continued a telling trend of the young season, as they lost when scored upon first. Dallas is 2-0 when tallying the opening goal and 0-2 when the opposite occurs.
Dave Tippett's club played without right wing, and 2003 Selke winner, Jere Lehtinen, who was scratched with back spasms. Lehtinen is questionable for this evening.
The Stars will resume their current set Sunday against Minnesota.
Washington, meanwhile, is 0-2-1 since an impressive 6-1 pounding of the NY Islanders on opening night. Tuesday the Caps dropped a 5-1 contest in Montreal.
Robert Lang scored in defeat, while backup goaltender Sebastien Charpentier made 25 saves. Washington scored six goals in its season-opening pounding of the Isles, but has totaled the same amount combined in the three games since.
Jaromir Jagr has been held off the scoresheet in consecutive contests after posting two goals and two assists in the first pair of games.
The Capitals will play the third portion of a six-game road trip tonight. They'll pick things up Saturday in St. Louis.
Dallas went 2-0 against Washington last season and is 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings. The Caps have lost in six of their last seven trips to Big D.
OTTAWA SENATORS (1-1-0-1) AT MIGHTY DUCKS OF ANAHEIM (0-3-0-0), 10:30 p.m. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Sports Network) - The Western Conference-champion Mighty Ducks of Anaheim continue the search for their first victory tonight when they invite the Ottawa Senators to the Pond.
Anaheim is 0-3 for only the second time ever -- 1998-99 being the other -- and the club has never fallen in its first four games of the season.
The Ducks have dropped contests to Dallas, Nashville and Phoenix thus far, getting outscored by a 9-2 margin. On Sunday their home opener was spoiled with a 2-0 loss to the Coyotes.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 26 shots for the Mighty Ducks, who raised their conference championship banner before the contest. Free agent signee Sergei Fedorov managed a game-high six shots versus Phoenix but still remains in search of his first goal in a Ducks sweater.
Fedorov and winger Vaclav Prospal, the team's significant additions during a free agent period that saw the Ducks lost captain Paul Kariya, have combined for a mere one assist (Fedorov) in three games and are a minus-5 between them.
The Ducks play the second installment of a three-game Pond set tonight and will host Boston on Sunday.
Ottawa, meanwhile, has lost its last two after starting the campaign with a victory over Montreal. The Sens have fallen to Detroit and Los Angeles, including a 4-3 tilt with the host Kings on Wednesday.
Daniel Alfredsson scored a pair of power-play goals for the Senators, who capitalized on three of their seven chances with the man advantage in the first two periods before surrendering a one-goal lead in the final frame. Zdeno Chara also found the net, while backup goaltender Martin Prusek made 23 saves.
Ottawa opened a three-game road trip Wednesday and will wrap things up Saturday in San Jose.
The Sens and Ducks split two games last season, with each club winning in its own rink. Anaheim snapped a seven-game series winless streak (0-5-2) with a 3-2 home win on January 29.
