ORLANDO ? The UCF football team practiced for two hours Tuesday in full pads. The Golden Knights worked on all three phases of the game in preparation for Saturday?s road game at Akron.

Senior quarterback Ryan Schneider was in full pads and threw the football very well during the individual periods. Schneider threw several passes and looked sharp in throwing to the running backs and wide receivers. It was the most he has thrown since injuring his right shoulder at Kent State Sept. 27.

?Ryan is further along in his rehabilitation of the injury than what I expected,? commented UCF head athletic trainer Darryl Conway. ?He is questionable for the Akron game and will be a game-time decision.?

The Golden Knights will have two more practices this week in Orlando before traveling to Akron Friday.

I am about 50 miles south of Akron and the temp here right now is 38 degrees, the high will probably reach 50. Even if Schneider plays it's going to be tough to get his shoulder loose and the Rubber Bowl has one of the worst artifical surfaces in the country, so the first time he gets sacked his shoulder will feel like he is being driven into concrete since thats what the surface feels like at Akron. Although if he plays he will be facing a soft defense that gambles all day, but he will have to match Frye point for point today.

Fast start key as Knights seek to salvage season

By Alan Schmadtke | Sentinel Staff Writer
Posted October 18, 2003

AKRON, Ohio -- There are many mysteries to UCF's 2003 season, but few draw attention like the chalkboard-screeching sound the Golden Knights make in the first quarter.

Is it possible to cover your ears and eyes at the same time? Opponents have outscored UCF 65-9 in the first quarter this year, a statistic that more than explains the Knights' seemingly constant state of desperation.

"We don't give ourselves a chance to win," UCF Coach Mike Kruczek said.

The next chance to reverse the trend comes against Akron (4-3 overall, 2-2 in the MAC) tonight at 6 at the Rubber Bowl.

Kruczek won't pick his quarterback until just before the game, but starter Ryan Schneider (shoulder sprain) was cleared to play this week and could regain his job after missing two games.

Here is a snippit from that lost article:

Schneider is eager to get back on the field. "I feel much better now. I think I'll play," he said. But it will be a game-time decision. Meanwhile, should Schneider still be unable to play, UCF has not ruled out putting freshman Steven Moffett into the starter's role, though such a move seems unlikely.
