ATLANTA THRASHERS (3-0-2-0) AT TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING (3-0-0-0), 7 p.m. --------------------------------------------------------------------

(Sports Network) - Two of the league's three remaining unbeaten clubs clash tonight when the Tampa Bay Lightning welcome the Atlanta Thrashers to the St. Pete Times Forum.

Tampa Bay is off to its second consecutive 3-0 start, and a win would mark its first-ever 4-0 clip. The Lightning have defeated Boston, Phoenix and New Jersey by a combined score of 13-4.

Martin St. Louis scored the winning goal late in the third period on Saturday, lifting the Bolts to a 3-2 victory over the Devils at the Meadowlands. Nikolai Khabibulin made 29 saves for the Lightning, and Martin Cibak and Vincent Lecavalier tallied as well.

St. Louis is tied with Cory Stillman for the club lead at two goals in the early going.

Tampa Bay opens a key stretch tonight, as it will play seven of the next eight at home. The Lightning will visit Columbus on Thursday before starting a six- game stand.

Atlanta, meanwhile, has opened the campaign with a franchise-record five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2). On Saturday the Thrashers posted a 7-2 pounding of the Chicago Blackhawks at Philips Arena. Ilya Kovalchuk recorded his second career hat trick and Vyacheslav Kozlov added a goal and three assists, while Pasi Nurminen made 24 saves.

Marc Savard added a goal and two assists for Atlanta, which tallied a club- record four power-play markers in 15 chances with the man advantage.

Kovalchuk's three goals continued the stellar start to his third NHL season. The Russian sniper, who is being counted on while Dany Heatley recovers from injuries suffered in last month's tragic auto accident, is tied for the league lead with five goals and sits tied for second with seven points. Kovalchuk was named NHL Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

The Thrashers play four of their next six on the road starting tonight.

Atlanta and Tampa Bay went 2-2-1 against each other last season, and the home team is 6-1-3 in the last 10 meetings. The Thrashers have lost in four of their last five trips to Tampa.

CALGARY FLAMES (2-2-0-0) AT MINNESOTA WILD (1-4-1-0), 8 p.m. ------------------------------------------------------------

(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Wild try to break out of their current funk tonight when they welcome the Calgary Flames to Xcel Energy Center.

Minnesota is 0-3-1 since a comeback victory over the New York Rangers on opening night, and the normally defensive-minded club has allowed the fourth- most amount of goals in the NHL (17).

On Sunday the Wild suffered a 3-1 defeat in Dallas, as the Stars scored three times in a 4:47 span of the second period. Christoph Brandner scored the lone goal for Minnesota, while Manny Fernandez finished with 27 saves.

The Wild, who advanced to the Western Conference finals a season ago, continue to play without their two leading scorers from a season ago, Marian Gaborik and Pascal Dupuis, both of whom are unsigned Group II/restricted free agents. Gaborik, however, is in Minnesota trying to hammer out a deal.

Minnesota will play six of its next eight on the road after tonight, starting Friday in Florida.

Calgary, meanwhile, had a two-game winning streak snapped via a 2-0 loss to Buffalo Saturday and enters this evening as one of the league's most inept clubs. The Flames are tied with Anaheim at the bottom of the NHL rankings with a mere five goals.

Illustrating the club's woes is the fact that Jarome Iginla, Craig Conroy and Dean McAmmond, who make up the club's top line, have yet to produce a point between them.

On the injury front, starting goaltender Roman Turek suffered a knee injury Saturday night and will be out of the lineup. Jamie McLennan, who has both of the team's wins thus far, will start in his place.

The Flames play four of their next five on the road starting tonight. They'll host St. Louis on Friday.

Calgary and Minnesota went 2-2-1 against each other last season and the home team is 7-2-3 in the last 12 meetings.

BOSTON BRUINS (3-1-2-0) AT COLORADO AVALANCHE (2-2-0-0), 9 p.m. ---------------------------------------------------------------

(Sports Network) - The Boston Bruins put a three-game winning streak on the line tonight when they visit the Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center.

Since starting the season 0-1-2, the Bruins have posted victories over Dallas, Los Angeles and Anaheim, including Sunday's 4-3 overtime triumph versus the Ducks. Sergei Samsonov scored with 52 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Bruins, who played the fifth portion of a six-game road trip.

Boston forced overtime when Mike Knuble tallied his second goal of the game with 4:25 left in regulation to cap a three-score rally. Brian Rolston found the net as well, and Andrew Raycroft finished with 26 saves.

Raycroft, 2-0-1 with a 1.44 goals-against average thus far, is making a serious pitch for playing time against veteran Felix Potvin, who was signed as a free agent shortly before the season.

The Bruins head home after tonight and will host Carolina on Thursday.

Colorado, meanwhile, has rotated wins and losses to this point, including Saturday's 6-3 setback in Edmonton. Rob Blake had a goal and an assist, and Paul Kariya and Alex Tanguay also scored for the Avs, who yielded a pair of shorthanded tallies.

Goaltender Philippe Suave allowed five goals on 24 shots in a forgettable NHL debut. David Aebischer, who has surrendered just four goals on 80 shots this season, is expected to be back between the pipes tonight.

Kariya's goal was his third of the season, which ties him with 2003 Maurice Richard Trophy winner Milan Hejduk for the club lead. His five points knot him with Blake and captain Joe Sakic for second on the team behind Forsberg (7).

The Avalanche, perhaps still trying to develop chemistry within their star- studded dressing room, will host Edmonton on Thursday.

Boston and Colorado split two games last season and the Avs are 6-1-1 in the last eight meetings.

ST. LOUIS BLUES (2-1-0-1) AT EDMONTON OILERS (3-2-0-0), 9 p.m. --------------------------------------------------------------

(Sports Network) - The Edmonton Oilers target their third straight win tonight when they conclude a three-game homestand against the St. Louis Blues at Skyreach Centre.

The Oilers remained unbeaten at home (3-0) on Saturday, as Steve Staios scored two goals and assisted on another to lead a 6-3 win over Colorado.

Ryan Smyth tallied a goal and two assists, while Cory Cross and Marty Reasoner each had a goal and an assist in the win. Mike York also lit the lamp for the Oilers, who have outscored opponents 15-8 on their ice. Away from home, though, it has been a different story as Edmonton has been shut out in both of its road contests.

Staios, who picked up his second consecutive three-point game, recorded the first multi-goal contest of his career.

Tommy Salo made 31 saves in the win.

Edmonton, which was 2-for-8 on the power play, will head to Colorado following tonight's game before returning home for another three-game homestand.

St. Louis, meanwhile, also enters tonight's contest on a high-note following a victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday. Keith Tkachuk and Pavol Demitra each had a goal and an assist and Doug Weight added three helpers to lead the Blues to a 4-1 victory.

Chris Osgood stopped 9-of-10 shots in two periods before leaving the game with a sore hip flexor. Brent Johnson took over in goal and made four saves, and he will get the nod tonight.

This will be only the fourth start for Johnson in the 25 games (including the playoffs) since Osgood made his debut with the Blues on March 15.

Petr Cajanek and Chris Pronger also scored in the victory for the Blues, who scored three times with man-advantage. They had entered the game just 3-for-37 on the power play.

Blues defenseman Al MacInnis remains out indefinitely and could be lost for the season after the discovery of a torn retina in his left eye. MacInnis underwent surgery on Friday to re-attach the retina and also had a laser procedure performed on the right eye to repair a slightly torn retina.

St. Louis was 2-1-1 last season versus the Oilers and is 4-1-2 against them in the last seven and 6-3-2 against them in the last 11 meetings. Edmonton, though, has won four of its last six at home against the Blues (4-1-1).

MIGHTY DUCKS OF ANAHEIM (0-4-0-1) AT SAN JOSE SHARKS (1-3-1-0), 10:30 p.m. --------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Sports Network) - The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim again try for their first win of the season tonight when they head to San Jose to face off with the Sharks at HP Pavilion.

The Mighty Ducks have opened defense of their Western Conference championship with five consecutive losses, including Sunday's 4-3 overtime setback at the hands of the visiting Boston Bruins.

Steve Rucchin tallied a pair of goals and Vaclav Prospal chipped in a goal and an assist for the Mighty Ducks, who picked up their first point of the season (0-4-0-1). Last campaign the team endured a five-game losing streak from December 26-to-January 3, but then posted a 25-12-3-3 mark after that on their way to the Stanley Cup Finals

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 26 saves for Anaheim, which is off to its worst start in franchise history. The Ducks worst five-game start prior to this season came when they went 1-4 in 1995-96.

Anaheim had led the game 3-1 and held a 3-2 edge late in the game, before Mike Knuble evened the game with 4:44 to play. Sergei Samsonov then scored with 52 seconds left in overtime to seal the Ducks' fate.

The Mighty Ducks have been outscored 16-5 in their five games this season.

San Jose, meanwhile, remained winless in its last two games following Saturday's 4-1 home-setback to the Ottawa Senators. Marco Sturm scored the lone goal for the Sharks, who have lost three of five to begin the season (1-3-1).

Sturm's goal ended San Jose's scoreless skid at just over 154 minutes.

Evgeni Nabokov made 19 saves in the loss.

Sturm spoiled Patrick Lalime's bid for a shutout with his first goal of the season with the Sharks on a power play midway through the final stanza.

Anaheim, which has won three straight from the Sharks, could have the advantage tonight, as the road team in this series has won eight of the last 11 matchups.

San Jose, though, has won nine of 13 and 10 of the last 15 meetings. The Ducks have also dropped five of eight and six of their last 10 at the Shark Tank.

PHILADELPHIA FLYERS (2-0-2-0) AT LOS ANGELES KINGS (3-2-0-0), 10:30 p.m. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Sports Network) - Roman Cechmanek faces Philadelphia for the first time since being dealt by the team when the Flyers skate into Los Angeles to meet the Kings at Staples Center.

Cechmanek recorded a 92-43-22 record over the last three years with Philadelphia, and his career goals-against average of 1.96 coming into this season was the lowest among goaltenders with at least 150 regular season games since 1943-44.

However, he had wore out his welcome in the City of Brotherly Love with fans, as well as teammates, thanks to his inconsistent play in the playoffs. Cechmanek was dealt to the Kings in May for a second round draft pick.

Cechmanek has had a rough go of it in LA thus far, going 2-2 with a 3.01 GAA. On Saturday the 31-year-old Czech netminder allowed a season-high four goals in his team's 4-3 setback to the Boston Bruins.

Luc Robitaille scored twice and Ziggy Palffy posted three assists for the Kings, who blew a three-goal first period lead. Lubomir Visnovsky added a goal and an assist in defeat.

Cechmanek finished with 23 saves in the loss, as the Kings saw their three- game winning streak come to an end.

Philadelphia, meanwhile, has not missed a beat since trading Cechmanek. The team is unbeaten through their first four games (2-0-2) and the goaltender who was brought in as a replacement, Jeff Hackett, has posted shutouts in two of his three games.

On Saturday, Hackett stopped 19 shots and Mark Recchi scored two goals and assisted on another to lead Philadelphia to a 5-4 victory over Phoenix. Jeremy Roenick added a goal and two assists for the Flyers, who are 1-0-1 on their current four-game Western Conference road swing.

Recchi is now two assists shy of 700 for his career.

Joni Pitkanen scored his first career goal and contributed an assist, while Tony Amonte notched a pair of helpers in the win. Keith Primeau also tallied for Philadelphia, which will conclude its trek on Wednesday against Anaheim.

Simon Gagne, though, left the game with a shoulder injury and will be a game- time decision. However, head coach Ken Hitchcock was less than optimistic about his 23-year-old winger's chances of playing tonight.

Also on the injury front Flyers' forward John LeClair, who had hoped to return at some point on this current road trip, will not return until this weekend at the earliest. LeClair has been sidelined all season with a broken foot.

Philly has won four straight over the Kings, all of those victories, though, came with Cechmanek in net. Philadelphia, which has outscored the Kings 15-2 in the last four games, has also won its last three in LA.

Scott Niedermayer, New Jersey Devils - After staying off the ice since last weekend due to a sore back, Niedermayer participated in a full practice Monday and declared himself fit and ready for the Devils' next game on Wednesday against the Panthers. You'll obviously want to keep him activated.

Eric Lindros, New York Rangers - Lindros left Monday's game against the Panthers with an undisclosed left shoulder injury. He underwent tests following the game, however, results were not made available as of this writing. We expect to learn more in the coming few days about how serious the injury is but Lindros does have four days until the Rangers play again so perhaps he will not miss any time. However, it's possible that he might have a mild separation, which will mean that he will miss at least a handful of games.

Mariusz Czerkawski, New York Islanders - Czerkawski scored two more goals Monday against the Maple Leafs, bringing his season total to five in five games. He has recaptured both his chemistry with Alexei Yashin and his former goal scoring prowess and could challenge 30 goals if he remains motivated. You could do a lot worse than picking him up off your fantasy league's free agent list, if he is still available.

Dave Scatchard, New York Islanders - Scatchard will miss at least four to six weeks with a right shoulder dislocation, reports the New York Newsday.

Adrian Aucoin, New York Islanders - Aucoin left Monday's game against the Maple Leafs in the third period with a groin strain. The severity of the injury was not immediately known, however, groin injuries seem to have become an ongoing problem for Aucoin.

John LeClair, Philadelphia Flyers - LeClair suffered a setback in his recovery from a fractured foot. He skated over the weekend and felt pain and thus will not return to the lineup during the current road trip. It is possible that he could return Saturday against the Hurricanes, but more likely than not, he will return some time next week. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, LeClair would like to get two consecutive problem-free practices before returning.

Simon Gagne, Philadelphia Flyers - Gagne is doubtful for Tuesday's game against the Kings due to a bruised right shoulder, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. He practiced on Monday but did left early and looked disappointed, later saying that his shoulder felt "tired". Gagne is a fabulous player when healthy, but he is turning into a big injury risk every year. It's best to still stick with him though because this latest injury is not deemed too serious.

Jaromir Jagr, Washington Capitals - After a fast start, Jagr has cooled off considerably by not registering a point in any of the Capitals' last four games, which ended up all being losses. Apart from clashing with coach Bruce Cassidy, Jagr is having some personal problems as well as he recently broke up with his long-time girlfriend. Friends of Jagr's say that he has not acted like his usual self for a long time and ultimately, it appears to have carried over on the ice. Jagr is still a very good offensive player, capable of being the league's very best, however with all his on- and off-ice problems, he must be downgraded from the elite. An 80-point season may be his top end this year.

Eric Daze, Chicago Blackhawks - Daze had his back re-examined on Monday but the Hawks declined to reveal the diagnosis, instead telling the media that they are in the process of getting a second opinion. This already doesn't sound good but to make matters worse, Daze will not accompany the Hawks on their upcoming road trip, which means he will almost surely miss at least another four games. Finally, taking into account that he's already had back surgery it could be a while before he's ready to play again.

Marek Svatos, Colorado Avalanche - Svatos will undergo surgery in the next few days to repair a partial dislocation in his shoulder and will be out indefinitely, reports the Denver Post. This will be Svatos' second major surgery on his shoulders in the past nine months.

Jere Lehtinen, Dallas Stars - After meeting with a spine specialist, Lehtinen will be sidelined for another couple of weeks with back spasms, reports the Dallas Morning News. The winger received an anti-inflammatory injection and was told to take it "week by week" and not rush back into the lineup.

Brad Stuart, San Jose Sharks - Stuart will make his season debut Tuesday against the Mighty Ducks, reports the San Jose Mercury News. The defenseman had been sidelined with a slightly separated shoulder but has been practicing for at least a week now with no reported discomfort. Stuart can be a decent fantasy defenseman, so if you need him, feel free to activate him for tonight's game.

Scott Mellanby, St. Louis Blues - Mellanby will accompany the Blues on their upcoming road trip and has a slight chance to play in Tuesday's game against the Oilers. However, the better bet is that he will wait until at least Wednesday's game against the Canucks, or perhaps even later. Mellanby is recovering from cracked ribs.

Al MacInnis, St. Louis Blues - According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, MacInnis saw his eye doctor on Monday morning and there was no change in his condition, which is considered a good sign.

goalie info

Pasi Nurminen, Atlanta Thrashers - Nurminen is the probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Lightning, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Felix Potvin, Boston Bruins - Potvin is the probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Avalanche, reports the Denver Post.

Jamie McLennan, Calgary Flames - McLennan is the probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Wild, reports the Calgary Sun.

David Aebischer, Colorado Avalanche - Aebischer is the probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Bruins, reports the Denver Post.

Roman Cechmanek, Los Angeles Kings - Cechmanek is the probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Flyers, reports the LA Times.

Jeff Hackett, Philadelphia Flyers - Hackett is the probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Kings, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. Robert Esche is slated to start Wednesday against the Mighty Ducks.

Brent Johnson, St. Louis Blues - Johnson is the probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Oilers, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Chris Osgood will start Wednesday against the Canucks.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Anaheim Mighty Ducks - Giguere is the probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Sharks.

Tommy Salo, Edmonton Oilers - Salo is the probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Oilers.

Dwayne Roloson, Minnesota Wild - Roloson is the probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Flames.

Evgeni Nabokov, San Jose Sharks - Nabokov is the probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Mighty Ducks.

John Grahame, Tampa Bay Lightning - Grahame is the probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Thrashers. At least this is what the Tampa newspapers seem to be speculating, but the Lightning could stick with Nikolai Khabibulin seeing as how they are undefeated. If we can update this situation before gametime, we'll do it so check back.

Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins - We'll almost definitely get confirmation on this tomorrow, but Fleury is currently favored to be the starter for Wednesday's game against the Hurricanes. The Penguins don't play again until the weekend, where they will have back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday. For those interested in looking ahead, we'd venture to guess that if Fleury wins tomorrow, he'll start Friday and Caron will start Saturday. If he loses, it will probably be the other way around.

Ron Tugnutt, Dallas Stars - Tugnutt, who has seen action in only one period so far this season, is likely to get the start Saturday against the Blue Jackets, reports the Dallas Morning News. The Stars play conference rival Red Wings on Friday and Marty Turco is sure to start that game and get a break the day after.

Curtis Joseph, Detroit Red Wings - Joseph has accepted an assignment to the AHL's Grand Rapid Griffiths and will likely make his first start of the season on Friday as he works his way back from ankle surgery. The Wings are saying that this is only a conditioning stint but the fact remains that Joseph could remain there for the whole year if the Wings chose to do that way (since he has already cleared waivers). However, the more likely scenario is that he will be called up either next week or the week after and will play in some games for the Red Wings as they try to showcase him for a trade.

Manny Legace, Detroit Red Wings - Legace still has not started a game for the Red Wings, but coach Dave Lewis told the Detroit Free Press that sometime next week, Legace will be in net. We'll go out on a limb and say that Legace will probably start some time this week - most likely Saturday against the Rangers - since the goaltending picture in Detroit is about to get crowded with Curtis Joseph getting healthy. If the Wings don't give Legace a start soon, they will have a real mess on their hands in no time.

Jamie Storr, Carolina Hurricanes - Storr left yesterday's practice to fly back home to Los Angeles so he could be with his wife, who is expecting their second child. However, he will rejoin the team on Wednesday and should start a game this week, most likely Thursday against the Bruins. Kevin Weekes is still firmly the #1 goalie, however, the Canes play three games in four nights during that stretch, so it's a perfect time to get Storr, who hasn't played yet this year, a start.
