80-90 hours/week doing a bunch of mindless scutwork then standing there while attending doctor goes over patients we have gone over 5 times already....then we get asked all kinds of questions we have no idea what they are and get yelled at for not knowing them....whoever invented this crap to train a doctor ought to be put in a mental hospital because he is a sociopath.....dr freeze is forced to stay up on a 30 hour shifts every fourth day (which makes it like every 3rd day) then sneaks off during morning rounds to call his newlywed, beautiful precious wife to say hello and good morning and i miss you for 2 minutes and gets bitched at for doing that....telling me i dont have my priorties in the right place

Dr. Freeze has had it up to his neck with bitchy nurses too who work for the government and therefore cannot be fired and have no accountability.

also have had it up with patients who come in there and think the hospital is a hotel and present with al kinds of ridiculous symptoms...this is what free health care gets you....cradle to the grave, womb to the tomb society....and sadly enough the people who are on free health care and dont pay a cent for it are the ones who dont comply so its like banging your head into a brick wall

dr. freeze has decided to take on a route of pathology...no internship with 100 hours/week for this cat......i will take the 9-5 job anyday.....yeah maybe it gets monotonous but i will take monotony, 200 bills/year, time to enjoy my lovely wife and future family and 18holes of golf along with time to go sit and enjoy a tailgate rather than work my ass off dealing with paperwork, insurance companies, lawyers, and noncompliant patients all day.....

one more week in the county hospital wards doing junior medicine hopefully (hopefully i pass that is which according to my mid month interview is in jeopardy due to my tendency to call my wife during post call rounds)....then i only have 4 more months of call my whole life hopefully when i am away from my bed for the night and have to suffer 30 hour shifts with no sleep, no sunlight, no fresh air, hospital stench etc. etc......AND PAYING TO DO SO!!!!

for those of you earning 40 grand/week working 9-5 in monotony.....count your blessings

Take care of kid when sick without calling in...

Would say more or but I am tired now...

Not too mention I can't speak in the 3rd person. I am not a pro athlete!

Huh?? Sign me up for that gig, please!

PS Doctors that aren't too lovable around here and act like pricks get the 3 AM pages. "This is Doctor Dinglenutt, I was paged!" "Yes, Dr. Dinglenutt, I have a patient who is constipated, and he doesn't have any orders for any bowel care." "YOU MEAN TO TELL ME YOU ARE PAGING ME AT 3 AM FOR SOMEBODY THAT CAN'T SHIT!!!!" "Yes, I sure am, you are the doctor, right, and you are in medicine for the patients, correct?" This routine usually stops them from being jerks and throwing around charts. The docs that are cool, we write verbal orders, and they sign them later.

Sorry your routine is so tough. Maybe after you have been a practicing physician for 10 years or so you can start trying to change the system through whatever ways are available. You'll just have to grin and bear it now, but maybe in the future, you could make a difference.

Eddie, Eddie your like a trained attack dog. But I did LMAS. Doc forget calling the wife. She may start to think all your doing is checking up on her. Ok you put in many hours. But how many off do you get after your a real Doc. I see more Doc's on golf course around here then at the clinic or hospital. Smack that Doc given you all that chit in the ear.

That's why I went to Dental School;) Can get the satisfaction of treating people, health oriented, manual dexterity, 4.5 day weeks and enough time to take care of my future wife and kids:D

Doc, I have a good friend of mine who is a pathologist and w/o going into a lot of details, is doing extremely well for himself and his family. He also seems to have a lot of time for extra-curricular activivties too. Good Luck

what the hell did you think you were going to do......read the cliffnotes?

What is truly sad about this thread Dr. Freeze is that you are in the caregiving business and you couldn't give a care. Fatdaddycool is in the representation business because fatdaddycool enjoys his position. Dr Freeze ought to buy a sno cone trailer and call it good

what is truly sad is you have no idea what you are talking about yet you have the arrogance to judge someone's character

probably 99% of my classmates share the same sentiment...this is a joke how they train us plain and simple

6-5 the county hospitals generally get all the over achieving nurses.... ...next month i get to go to a nice hospital and there they will actually not treat med students like a bedpan or anyone for that matter because if they do, their ass is fired....

as far as dental school....when i picked medicine i thought i would be "making a bigger difference" because it is a life that may be saved....however, the more i learn, the less i see in that because most often you just treat symptoms and will see them in a couple months when the symptoms are even worse....dentistry you pretty much help someone 100% of the time...which seems more satisfactory at this point

oh well...gotta catch some sleep tonight cuz tomorrow night there wont be any:(

maybe you should just quit being a doctor and become a nurse ?then you get to wear a nice white skirt instead of scrubs.

Got into medicine to save lives. Nice thought Dr Freeze but welcome to the real world where idealism fades away into REALISM. Have a nice day...

I know here at UNC's med school they have banned the 30 hour shifts, I think they max they can do is 18 hours every few days. From what I hear, that was a pretty big deal and has helped some of the med students here.

And you guys giving him shit for complaining...imagine your loved one getting in a car accident and being in the ER and having a sleep deprived resident who has been on the job 30 hours and can't see straight working on your wife or son. Maybe that will change your perspective. That is no way to encourage learning and training of tomorrow's doctors, it is more like hazing that older MDs insist today's students go through because "they had to" and they are too stubborn to do the right thing and changed a flawed system.

I think the only reason they treat med students like carpet lint is because they themselves endured it at one time....

Dr, have fun hazing those young med students when your time comes.

nah if anyhting i will try to change the system...its a joke right now.....dont really believe in getting back at the next generation.....if anything, i hate THAT attitude....we aren't living in the 19th century so there is no reason to prolong it in medicine

luckily today has been easy so far....probably just means tonight will suck though.....

and for you doubters, "idealism" doesn't necessarily always HAVE to conflict with "realism".......if people would pay for their health care and you could hit them a little more in the pocketbook directly instead of just automatically taking it out of their checks no matter what (or giving it for free) you would have MUCH more compliance and a MUCH healthier society.......people will comply when they have to work for things

THAT is why conservatism truly DOES have heart and why liberalism does NOT have heart.....a bleeding heart does not fatten up its citizens into such utter laziness that they do not even desire to take care of themselves anymore

Dr. Freeze:

I am a medical student too (4th year). I had many of your similar experiences. I have decided to do Radiology (and my fiancee chose Path) and lifestyle was definitely a big factor. If you do go into path, I guarantee you that finding a residency at a location of your choice will be no problem. Granted, my fiance is an AOA at one of the top schools on the planet, but she has received interviews and cock suck calls from every path program she applied to in our couples match hell. Just pick something that makes you happy and comfortable, and don't sweat the small stuff like bitchy nurses. When they are bitchy to me, I just smile and try to find somebody else who will help. Getting bitchy back gets you no where in the morass that is the hospital. It sounds like they are being exceptionally hard on you where you are, however.
