Under the new deal, Bertuzzi's base salary will increase to $4.3 million US. He also will receive a $2.5-million US signing bonus. Next year Bertuzzi's salary jumps to $6.6 million US and he receives a $500,000 US signing bonus. In the last two years of the deal Bertuzzi will be paid $6.9 million US.

Bertuzzi, 28, was in the final year of a deal that paid him a base salary of $3.7 million US and performance bonuses that would have increased that to around $5.5 million.

"I know how hard it was and it was nice to get it done," said Bertuzzi in a post-game press conference.

The right winger said he wanted a new deal in place before the season started, and wouldn't negotiate again until next summer. He extended that deadline and it was finally resolved on Sunday.

"This is my home, this is where my kids were born, and this is where I became the player I am today," Bertuzzi said.

Bertuzzi, known as Bert by his teammates and the rabid Canucks fans, had a breakout season last year. The six-foot-three, 245-pound Sudbury, Ont., native had a career high 46 goals and 97 points while playing all 82 games.

Until recently, Bertuzzi's agent Pat Morris said talks with the Canucks were amicable.

Bertuzzi, a father of two, was the New York Islanders' first pick, 23rd overall, in the 1993 draft. He was dealt to Vancouver with Bryan McCabe and a third-round draft pick for Trevor Linden on Feb. 6, 1998.
