MC - One game they set at a key number is the USC/Arizona game. I have it at 28.5. I would like to know if Scott4USC thinks USC gets caught looking ahead to UCLA? Do they come out and take Arizona lightly after their bye week? Thoughts??

I like Cal and LSU at first glance. Clemson could be in for a letdown and Duke is playing inspired football the last 2 weeks.

The only game that you have that looks good is LSU, don't be fooled by Bama's blowout of Miss State, LSU is healthy and will crush them.

Phil Steele's news and notes, Part I
November 9, 2003
Phil Steele
VegasInsider.com
Bowling Green was ranked #15 & Miami (OH) was just out of the polls but MU got the win at home on Tuesday night. BG's first two drives ended on a fumble at the MU 15 & after a 1st & goal at the 7 they missed a 22 yd FG. It was still just 10-7 at the half & 24-10 mid-4Q when BG would get a 20 yd FG. BG fumbled & MU added a 24 yd drive for a TD with 3:45 left & won by 23 despite the FD's being even at 20...

S Carolina's inability to punch it in from inside the 20 hurt them as they settled for 42 & 35 yd FG's & fumbled at the Arkansas 15 & 3 yd lines scoring six points on 4 trips. The key play happened early in the 3Q with Arkansas leading 14-3. On 3rd & 11 QB Jones threw a pass that looked like an apparent int but it bounced off the SC DB's hands & was caught by WR Smith who turned into a 37 yd TD & the Hogs won 28-6 despite having just a 21-17 FD edge...

Louisville K Nate Smith hit 13 of his first 14 FG's on the season but vs TCU on Wednesday night, missed a 21 yd FG. TCU took a 31-21 lead but UL lined up for a 26 yd FG & faked it for a TD with 6:39 left. After TCU was SOD, Smith missed a 47 yd FG with 2:37 left but UL got the ball back which set up Smith for the game tying 44 yd FG on the last play which he missed, his third straight...

N Illinois' Michael "The Burner" Turner rushed for 100 yds in the 1Q vs Buffalo including a 60 yd run on the first play & finished the game with 163 yds. The game was actually tight at 17-9 with 1:54 left in the half when NI took over after an int & drove 44 yds for a TD & after a punt with :26 left drove 38 yds for another TD to make it 31-9. They added two more 2H scores for the cover...

Cal led Oregon 17-7 in the 4Q but the Ducks would get two TD drives in the final 5:00 scoring their final TD with :47 left to pull out a 21-17 win...

Idaho scored a TD with 4:27 left against Arkansas St but opted to go for the 2 pt conversion & the win & were stopped. They were forced to punt on their final 2 poss & ended up losing to Arkansas St by 1...

San Jose St QB Scott Rislov threw for 461 yds & 6 TD's by halftime & finished the game with 543 yds. SJS did roll up 664 yds offense against UTEP with the Miners having 630 but the score was 62-20 after 3Q's with UTEP scoring three 4Q TD's...

Tulsa trailed Rice but got a TD to not only win the game but get an ATS push with :54 left...

Washington had a 24-11 FD edge vs Arizona & 452-401 yd edge but UA won its first conference home game since October of 2000 snapping a string of 13 straight home losses in Pac 10 play.

STRANGE LINES - Two games in MAC play were very odd as Las Vegas & the offshore sportsbooks did not post a number until late Saturday morning. Ohio U has used 3 QB's this year in Freddie Ray, Ryan Hawk & true frosh Austin Everson & all have started this year. It was listed that starting QB Ray was questionable but that would be no big deal with Hawk & Everson still available. For some reason, the game was off the board until 10:15 am on Saturday, after we released our Small College Plays. As it turned out, Hawk did a fine job hitting 10 of 12 for 168 yds & OU had leads of 20-3 & 27-10 but lost it late 37-33 to Kent St. Why that game was taken off the board is very puzzling...

UCF suspended their star QB, Ryan Schneider, who is one of the best QB's in the MAC & during the year they have had very poor play from the backups. They also suspended 4 other starters during the week but that game not only remained on the board but did not even move spread-wise as UCF was a 7 pt favorite all week. As you would think, without Schneider, UCF lost 19-13 generating just 181 total yds offense behind first time starter Steven Moffett who hit 7 of 18 for 46 yds. If either game was to be taken off the board, it should have been UCF game.

MISLEADING FINALS & STATS - A look at the boxscore in the Purdue/Iowa game would show each team each finishing with 16 FD's & PU having just a 321-301 yd edge but that does not speak of the domination of PU in this game The Boilers not only led 13-0 at the half it was 27-0 mid-3Q before allowing Iowa 63, 67 & 49 yd drives on their final 3 poss, two for TD's. The most impressive drive of the game did not end up in points as PU went 61 yds in 13 plays after Iowa's 2nd TD to run off 7:51 of the clock...

Rutgers had a 24-14 FD edge vs UConn & 455-321 yd edge but could not overcome 5 crucial turnovers. RU led 17-7 at the half & 24-21 after 3Q's. An int set up a UConn 24 yd FG & a key play happened when on 3rd & 19 with 4:25 left UConn QB Orlovsky, under pressure, lofted a pass down the sideline which was taken 72 yds for a TD. It was tied 31-31 when RU fumbled a punt with 1:29 left on their own 6 leading to a UConn 2 yd TD run on 3rd down then the Huskies got a TD for the ATS push with :26 left...

W Virginia was without starting QB Rasheed Marshall & backup Charles Hales hit 11 of 16 for 167. BC QB Quinton Porter was injured early & Paul Peterson saw the bulk of the action hitting 22 of 41 for 231 yds. BC had 30-15 FD & 475-311 yd edges & led 14-0 early but WV got a 49 yd int return for a TD & later an 87 yd KR for a TD to lead 35-21. BC pulled within 7 with 3:15 left & drove to a 1st & goal at the 7 in the final minute but four passes into the EZ fell incomplete...

Washington St QB Matt Kegel was far from 100% heading into the game & after suffering a hard hit late in the 1Q was replaced by Josh Swogger. Swogger hit just 5 of 16 passes for 82 yds. WSU only had 14 FD's on the day. The key to the game came in the final 2:00 of the 1H in a sloppily played game that saw each team turn the ball over 7 times. The score was just 14-3 when UCLA recovered a fumbled punt with 3:48 left in the half & got a 33 yd FG to pull within 14-6. UCLA then fumbled a punt & it was returned 71 yds to the Bruin 12. WSU got a TD on the next play with 1:56 left in the half. UCLA went 3 & out & the punter was tackled at the 9 & on the next play WSU got another TD scoring two TD's in the final 2:00 of the half to make it 28-6. They were able to hold on for a 31-13 win..

It was a tough loss in OT for E Carolina. EC had 22-11 FD & 362-243 yd edges. USF blocked a punt to set up a 12 yd TD & they returned a fumble 50 yds for a TD & a 14-0 lead. During the game EC missed 54 & 43 yd FG's & it went to OT where USF won on a blocked xp in the second OT.

TURNABOUT IS FAIR PLAY - All season long Wake Forest has been outgained & outplayed by their opponents but have somehow ended up with wins. Against N Carolina the tide was turned. In their first 3 drives WF went 59 yds in 13 plays, 55 yds in 13 plays & 81 yds in 12 plays but despite racking up 13 FD's & controlling the ball they had just 7 points as two FG's were blk'd. N Carolina, in their first 3 poss, only had 2 FD's but ultimately turnovers would doom Wake. They fumbled a punt setting up an NC TD, had an xp blocked & returned for 2 pts, fumbled a KO early 3Q & were int'd & NC rolled to a 35-13 lead & held on for the win.

BIG PLAYS - Injuries hampered Ole Miss as they lost two starting OL & after scoring two TD's early on went conservative on offense after Manning took a few sacks. The game was 10-7 with 3:36 left in the 1Q but just 14-10 at the half. A couple more key plays happened which determined the outcome of the game. Auburn missed a 32 yd FG with 7:20 left & Ole Miss got the go-ahead TD with 2:33 left. Auburn had a FD at the 11 but on 3rd & 2 Campbell hit a wide open Obomanu in the endzone for the TD but he dropped it. The 4th down pass bounced off the receiver's hands in a much tougher catch & Auburn's SEC Title hopes ended.

RIVALRY DOMINATION - Two teams came in with huge rivalry domination streaks & while both prevailed, neither did it easily. Nebraska had beaten Kansas every year since 1969 winning 34 straight games. They did lead 10-3 at the half but KU was int'd at the Nebraska 5 early 3Q. NU drove 87 yds & was headed for the endzone but fumbled into it for a touchback. NU got a TD with 1:06 left in the 3Q & then drove 81 yds in 12 plays for a TD with 8:49 left to get ahead of the spread for the first time, 24-3. KU got to the NU 9 & got an 8 yd run but fumbled at the end at the 1 with 4:00 left & the Huskers ran out the clock & got the cover...

Kansas St has now won 10 straight against Iowa St including the last 4 by a combined 201-20 margin The 1H was actually close with K-State only having a 169-100 yd edge & leading only 14-0 but they thoroughly dominated the 2H with a 334-40 yd edge shutting out Iowa St for the second consecutive game for the first time since 1958 & RB Sproles rushed for 201 yds...

The Irish improved the NCAA record of consecutive wins vs one team to 40 but it was not easy. ND did have commanding 24-14 FD & 417-284 yd edges but missed 43 & 50 yd FG's in the 1H & punting deep in its territory, consistently gave Navy a short field to work with. Navy had scoring drives of 24, 40 & 39 yds & led 24-21 with 9:53 left. The Irish got a 30 yd FG with 5:10 left & then Navy opted to punt on 4th & 5 from the ND 47 with 1:54 left & the Irish's final 40 yd FG was partially blocked but fluttered through the uprights..

MC...i do not like Clemson, Iowa St. or N.C. State. and Houston

Possible Top play for me:
Baylor..and don't laugh ..no way Stoops put starters in beyond the middle of 2nd quarter. will run it up early and leave the door open.

like these:
Miami-20..may god have mercy on syracuse..2nd best play this week..they win by 30+

Bowling Green-20

Indiana+19..when did Penn st earn the right to be almost 3 td favorite..don't think DiNardo's defense let a blowout occur.both teams are horrible

Duke+14..this team has many starters back on both sides of the ball and extremely good on the defensive side+ Clemson letdown..they contained Tennessee up to the late 3 rd quarter..

LSU....Sabine is lo0king for the shot at Oklahoma..when uSC loses one more game and Ohio state gets beat this week or next.

Tulane+17'...QB Losman back in form..S.Miss has problems stopping the pass..i see them swapping T.D. s all nite

Brigham Young comes up as a play..like to see at least 10 points.

Troy state comes as a play...but hell they just can't score..maybe a repeat of last week with MTSU. one plus is that Utah state does not have the defense MTSU has.

Uconn.... comes up as a play at +9

L.A Monroe should win S/U..same scenario with Idaho..0-4 on the road etc etc..monroe is improving

Memphis...stays within the number with defense and offense is improving weekly

Mississippi st.+23'...i'd wait for a higher number..Fulmer has no bone to pick with Sherrill..and i think he won't embarrass them with a blowout..also remember Duke..Marshall...Fresno...Fulmer struggled thru these games...and letdown

Virginia and the points..could see the same thing as last year the way Maryland is playing..but they are at home and may get a big pair of balls. i'm staying away on week games.

I'll be out of pocket for a few days ..be back Thursday nite to finalize 3 other plays i'm working on. gl

West Virginia: Senior defensive end Fred Blueford will miss the rest of the season with a torn knee ligament, coach Rich Rodriguez said Monday.

An MRI exam revealed the injury, which occurred in Saturday's 35-28 win over Boston College.

Junior Jason Hardee will probably start in Blueford's place.

UCLA: Last week, coach Karl Dorrell hedged on his choice at starting quarterback. This week, he left no doubt.

"Matt Moore will be our quarterback next week," Dorrell told the Los Angeles Times. "There is no controversy."

Moore's job came under scrutiny after a loss to Stanford in which he was sacked eight times and was knocked out in the fourth quarter. Moore will keep his job despite last week's 31-13 loss to Washington State, in which he was held to just 11 completions on 29 attempts for 138 yards and was intercepted twice.

Fellow sophomore Drew Olson backs up Moore. Olson won four straight starts earlier this year when Moore was recovering from a knee injury suffered in the Bruins' season opener.

Maryland: Running back Bruce Perry missed another Maryland practice Sunday and his status for Thursday's game against Virginia remains questionable because of his left ankle sprain, the Washington Post reported Monday. Terrapins Coach Ralph Friedgen told the paper that Perry would need to practice today in order to play. Perry already has missed two games this season because of the nagging injury.

According to the report, if Perry is out or less than full strength, sophomore Josh Allen will fill in. Allen leads the Terps with 461 yards rushing.

"No matter what the situation is," Allen told the paper, "you have to make sure you're ready to come in and play your role."

Minnesota: Quarterback Asad Abdul-Khaliq is questionable for Saturday's regular-season finale at Iowa after a medical exam revealed less damage than expected to his banged-up left shoulder, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

According to the report, Abdul-Khaliq landed on his non-throwing shoulder late in the first half of the 37-34 victory over Wisconsin and spent the rest of the game on the sideline, his arm immobilized in a sling in the second half.

The Gophers went through a similar situation last season when Abdul-Khaliq was suffering from an ankle injury and was unable to practice.

"We're used to it," coach Glen Mason told the paper.

Louisville: Leading rusher Eric Shelton sprained his neck taking a hit in the first half against TCU. Shelton, who topped 100 yards rushing in Louisville's previous two games, did not practice Sunday and was having tests done on Monday -- leaving his status for Saturday's game uncertain.

"That decision will be made by our medical staff, not by me," coach Bobby Petrino said. "We just go by what they say and whenever they feel like that decision can be made, it will be made.

"If it was up to Eric, he'd play. He wanted to come out and practice Sunday night. But there are some things they have to do. They're running some more tests and just making sure everything's fine."

Joe,

For example Miami of Ohio is listed as a 13 point favorite according to Sagarin they shouldwin by 20.

Example of a dog:Rutgers is getting 7.5 points, Sagarin has BC winning by 2

nc
with fsu's loss to clemson, nc state's game in tallahassee now could determine the acc championship and the conference's bcs bowl bid. it's unusual to say that, at 7-3, the season has been a bit of a disappointment for the pack, but that is definitely the case. nc state has beaten the 'noles the last two meetings, and i expect amato will have his team sky high for this one. rivers should be able to at least keep the pack within the generous number.

i'm pretty impressed with what interim coach roof has done to turn artound the mindset of his duke team. the pressure on tommy bowden and the tigers to win the bowden bowl this year was intense; hard to imagine there won't be some kind of letdown with the blue devils coming to town. dukes should be able to keep enough of a ground game going to stay within the spread.

think va stays close to md and could be a good moneyline play.

I like the Wisconsin game just can't see Michigan State coming off their biggest rival in Michigan. Then going against Ohio State. Teams coming off the defending champs haven't done that well the following week.

Toledo those good Mac teams catching points at home you have to take them. Especially the few games they have shown on TV it seems the officiating is so biased to the home teams.

I tend to lean on most of your sides this week and the games above I am definately taking.

Virginia at MARYLAND (Thursday night)...Maryland in serious payback mode
following 48-13 loss at Virginia LY (Terps worst setback of year). Maryland
led 7-0 in 2nd Q but was subsequently hurt by TOs (3) and dropped passes.
Terps haven't forgotten how Cavs added salt to wound by scoring on 5-yd. run
with just 3 mins. remaining and holding 41-13 lead.

Houston at ARMY...UH is one of few teams Army has had spread success against
lately, as Cadets (17 are native Texans) have covered 4 of past 5 in series.

Utep at BOISE STATE...BSU high-percentage on disconcerting (for foes) blue
carpet of Bronco Stadium, where host is now 17-6 as chalk since '98.

North Carolina State at FLORIDA STATE...FSU in rare double-revenge mode vs.
NCS, which is led by HC Chuck Amato, who served as Bobby Bowden assistant
for 18 years before taking over in Raleigh in '00. In 17-7 upset LY, 'Noles
only TD came on 84-yd fumble return in 2nd Q.

Auburn at GEORGIA...Auburn is 4-1 as road dog last 1+Ys. And Tigers looking
to settle a score after UGA pulled out narrow 24-21 win on 19-yd. TD pass on
4th down with just 1:25 left. Remember, Tigers were missing star RB
"Cadillac Williams" due to injury last year.

Colorado at IOWA STATE...CU has covered 4 of past 5 in series, and spiraling
ISU is an icy 1-12 vs. spread last 13 on board. Buffs stampeded (331 YR in
51 carries) during 41-27 victory in Boulder LY.

Memphis at LOUISVILLE...Tightly-contested series lately; 5 of last 6 decided
by total of just 13 points (underdog has covered 5 of those).

Purdue at OHIO STATE...Purdue fired-up for rematch in "The Shoe."
Boilermakers, who outgained OSU 341-267, gave up winning score on 37-yd TD
pass LY from heavily-pressured QB Krenzel, who audibilized on 4th-and-one
with 1:37 to play in 10-6 win that kept Buckeyes' national title hopes
alive.

Kansas at OKLAHOMA STATE...OSU has covered 5 straight in series (DNP in '96,
'97, '00 &'01). Cowboy QB Fields had field day in 55-20 bashing LY,
completing 17 of 27 for 354 yds. and then school-record 6 TDP.

Indiana at PENN STATE...Indiana just 2-10-1 vs. spread last 13 in Big Ten
play. Penn State has covered 5 of last 6 in series, including decisive
58-25 romp LY.

Boston College at RUTGERS...Rutgers vastly improved (8-0-1 vs. spread) but
keep in mind, BC has covered 7 of past 8 in series.

Virginia Tech at TEMPLE...Visitor has covered 5 straight in series, with VT
smashing Temple by combined 97-7 margin in last 2 trips to Philly. Owls a
hootless 5-14 as home dog last 5+Ys.

Cincinnati at TCU...Good role for Cincy, which is a nifty 7-1 as road dog
last 2+ seasons (only loss in OT at South Fla.).

Louisiana Tech at TULSA...Resuscitated Tulsa eager to go 4-0-1 vs. spread in
payback games TY. La. Tech humiliated Golden Hurricane 53-9 early LY (worst
loss since joining loop in '96).

Oregon at UCLA...U of O has covered 5 of last 6 vs. UCLA. Bruins have
failed on last-minute potential game-winning FGs in pair of 1-point losses
L2Ys.

Wyoming at UTAH...Wyo is quiet 9-2-1 vs. spread last 12 vs. MWC foes.
Cowboys prolific QB Bramlett had terrific outing in 23-18 home loss LY,
completing 25 of 48 for 361 yds. & 2 TDs.

Kentucky at VANDERBILT...Vandy has dropped 22 straight in SEC, but doubt UK
will be complacent following misleading 41-21 victory LY. Wildcats-who led
just 28-21 in final period-scored 2 TDs in last 16 ticks, with 2nd one
coming on recovered fumbled snap in Vandy end zone on final play of game.

Michigan State at WISCONSIN...In LY's 42-24 setback, MSU was forced to go
with green backup QB Dowdell after starting QB Smoker was suspended for rule
violations prior to game. Rejuvenated MSU defense eager to redeem itself
after permitting Wisconsin RBs to rumble for 313 yds. in 56 tries.

Army at AIR FORCE...AF has controlled series with this fellow service academy,
garnering last 6 (5-1 vs. number). Falcons surprised Army "D" by using a
variety of sets (including I-Formation) in 49-30 romp LY at West Point. AF
rolled up 380 yds. in 65 totes.

Kent State at OHIO...Kent State has circled this one in red following
horrific 50-0 blowout vs. instate rival Ohio LY (Golden Flashes worst MAC
defeat since 56-0 loss vs. Miami-Ohio in '98). Kent State QB Cribbs eager
to make amends after completing just 5 of 14 with 3 "picks."

Virginia Tech at PITTSBURGH...Pitt has been nemesis for VT lately, as
Panthers have covered 6 of past 7, including big upsets last 2Ys (Pitt
posted 19 & 11-point dogs). Panther QB Rutherford (accounted for 264 yds.)
hooked up with star WR Fitzgerald for 3 TDP in 28-21 shocker in Blacksburg
LY.

Smu at LOUISIANA TECH...La. Tech (13-point chalk) chomping at bit for
rematch following stunning 37-34 upset vs. SMU LY. Mustangs are a frigid
4-14 vs. spread last 18 contests.

Loophole,

Good stuff on the two games, I wonder why the Duke line is going up hit 14 now?

Greed,
Wisky has now lost three in a row due to their inability t oestablih a running game, they are not going to beat too many teams relying on Sorgi to win with his arm. Agree with you on MSU possibly being down, they just went through the Mich and OSU sandwich but I want to see if Davis is going to play for Wisky. In regards to Toledo, I am going to see where the line goes in this game, a case can be made for both sides in this tilt.

JoeDe,

Baylor- Stoops may ease up a little but even when he eases up his backup's would be starters at Baylor. No matter how much a coach wants to keep the score respectable he cannot tell guys that have seen limited action to not go full tilt because 1) he is putting that player at risk to a injury, 2) these guys have busted their balls al lyear in practice and if you dont give them a opportunity you may lose their faith.

Miami-Fla-Looks like a blowout, I just have to ? what is the mindset of the Cane's players at this point? They very well may be looking at a lower rung bowl even if they win out.

BGSU-Much better overall team then Kent, they should handle them but Kent has been putting some points up lately.

Ind-Granted the hoosiers are terrible but what has PSU done all year to justify laying this wood?

LSU-They should be rested and in my opinion better than a Bama team that still is suffering from a few years of probation and lack of recruits.

Duke-Seems like a trendy play this week

BYU-Wow this game has two teams that have terrible offenses, I keep waiting for ND to open up a little but they must not have the athletes to open the offense up. Crowton is feeling the heat in Mormon land, he needs this one.

Tulane-Alot of points for a good offense to be getting, the only thing that scares me is that S Miss has seemed to have turned up the heat of their defense in the past month.

Troy State-With my early numbers this is a play, but could change

Ul-Mon-Right now passing, I always get burnt on bad teams in this league.

Memphis-Looking at them as a play

Miss State-I can tell you know this team has quit and packed it in for the season, there will be no emotional win one for Jackie with this group. The only question is can the Vol's muster enough offense to cover this nut?

UCONN-Still looking they seem to stay in games with ACC opponets, but Wake is a funky team they seem to have one bad week followed by a good week.

UVA-Waiting for a total.

Week 0-0
Season 103-72-2 +39.7 units

Got bailed out last week with my bigger plays all cashing except for Auburn over the total, who would of thought that I would cash a 4 unit play on Eastern Mich, thats scary. Finished with a disappointing record of 10-12 for the week but up 7.2 units. Treading lightly tonight the weather is going to be a factor as it is going to possibly be raining with high winds in the 25-30 MPH range, missed out on the total as it has adjusted itself down before I could play it, but going to hit the Thundering Herd for a 1 unit play at +12.

Good Luck Cappers!!!!!!!

Maryland will steamroll Virginia, if you think otherwise then you have no concepts of home field and defense.

Bad call last night on Marshall, Miami of Ohio has kicked my a$$ everytime I have went against them 4 times this year, no more going against the Hawks for me. Going to follow ajoytoy on his UVA play, small play for me because of the uncertain weather conditions, UVA +6.5 for 1 unit.

Good Luck Cappers!!!!!
