From RedRaiders.com -- Not all bad news for Tech backers....personally, I don't think it matters -- There is no way Tech's "D" holds em under 50...
It remains to be seen whether Texas Tech quarterback B.J. Symons can break the NCAA single-season passing yardage record Saturday or even finish the game against the Texas Longhorns in Austin.
There appears to be a good chance that Symons will start, however, when the Red Raiders take on the Longhorns in a nationally televised 6 p.m. game Saturday at Royal-Memorial Stadium.
He worked out Thursday and showed decent mobility ? a sharp contrast to how he looked on his final two series last Saturday at Baylor after he aggravated a left knee injury.
Tech practices are closed except for the first 20 minutes. During that period Thursday, Symons warmed up by running at two-thirds to three-quarter speed and also looked comfortable dropping back and flipping a few passes.
Tech players are off-limits to the media after Tuesday, but earlier this week flanker Carlos Francis said the Raiders knew better than to question Symons' toughness.
"People are starting to understand how B.J. plays," Francis said. "He's a gunslinger. He goes out there and he doesn't care. Injury or no injury, he knows it's Texas, and he knows we need him, but he knows how to be smart as well.
"If he's healthy, he's going. If he's not, he's probably going anyway. But we're going to be there to support him."
Symons' backup is junior Sonny Cumbie, who's not been tested in a close game. Cumbie has appeared in five games this season, completing 35 of 56 passes for 340 yards and one touchdown. He had the best numbers of his career last week ? 146 yards and one TD on 11-of-16 passing in a 62-14 rout of Baylor.
Being a first-year starter as a fifth-year senior, Symons said this week that he doesn't want to miss his only chance to play in big games against No. 6 Texas and No. 1 Oklahoma.
"I've never played against the University of Texas in my career at Tech," Symons said, "so it'd be real disappointing not to be able to go out there and play. It's going to be my only shot against them. I expect to play and play well and have a good game."
Symons is the nation's passing leader with 4,741 yards and 44 touchdowns through the air. He's chasing the single-season records of 5,188 passing yards that Ty Detmer set playing in 12 games for Brigham Young and of 54 touchdown passes that David Klingler set in 11 games for Houston.
Both marks were established in 1990.
Symons is closer to the school records of 5,017 yards passing and 45 touchdowns that Kliff Kingsbury set last year.
Symons said his first wish is to do something else Kingsbury did last year ? upset Texas. Kingsbury passed for 473 yards and six touchdowns in a 42-38 victory at Jones SBC Stadium.
"Kliff mentioned beating Texas at home, his last game at home, was one of the best feelings he had and a big win for him," Symons said. "The University of Texas as a program, everybody knows what they're about ? the tradition and things like that. It's definitely a big game for us and myself. I'm just looking forward to going out there and being able to perform against them. I'm looking forward to the challenge."
