Somehow my Home page now defaults to "Searchdot.net" and I can't get rid of it. I've gone to internet tool and typed what I wanted and applied it...to no avail. It changes back to searchdot the minute I restart the computer (if left on it stays with my selection). I've changed the settings in explorer and that doesn't work either. Our computer rep suggested running adaware which didn't reveal anything...but there's obviously something running in the background because my computer will at times start running extremely slow. Typing in cntrl-alt-del does not reveal anything. However on a reboot...I kept hitting C-A-D to see what programs were launching and I did catch it at one time starting something as "unknown"...any suggestions?? Thanks

Redfish, make sure that when you run Adaware, that you open up IE and minimize it before you start Adaware. I wasn't doing that in the past, but someone here suggested it and it took care of several of my computer issues. Good Luck

One thing to try is click on [tools] - then [internet options] - then [advanced] and then disable the "Enable third part browser extensions"
After you do that, then, change the homepage thing and it might stay.

It sounds like a virus, try to run a full scan on your computer.
Most times the default was a porn site, and the site itself will have a 'patch' to undo it.

This page has a patch on the bottom to remove it.....but when you click it...the screen just say "PLEASE WAIT...." and nothing ever happens.

I agree with KMA...sounds like a virus. Especially since it comes back up on restarts, makes me think it's in your registry now.

Boilermaker, I had something called "Hotbar" several months ago that my lovely daughter decided to download on my computer while I was gone one day. There was one program associated with it that took up 45MB. I think this is how I got rid of it.

My Computer->C->Program Files->then look for a folder with something.Bar(the one I had was called "Hotbar")->open it up and delete everything in there but make sure it is what you are looking for. Might also be a good time to get rid of some other unused crap floating around that you don't use. After that, go to

Start->Run->type in "misconfig"->OK->Click the "Start Up" tab and then scroll down until you find a file that has the same name as the one you just deleted out of the "Program Files", and uncheck the box next to it. Once you have done this, empty your "Recycle Bin". Then reboot your computer.

I am far from being a computer genious, but that is what someone on this site suggested and it worked for me. Good Luck

Redfish, you might look here (Program Files) to see if what is giving you your issues is in there.

Thanks for all the suggestions....but nothing worked. Did a search and came up with this site which had several recommendations for removing SEARCHDOT.NET and it worked.
