Everyone knows that USC was the best team in college football in 2002. They would have crushed Ohio State had they played straight up. Ohio State was a mythical National Champion just as all college football champions throughout history have been mythical National Champions. A true championship is determined by allowing the champions of each major conference to compete on the field. Obviously, that has never happened in college football so no team can ever claim to have been a true National Champion. Teams can only claim to be the best team in college football, which USC was in 2002.

USC is also (so far) the best college football team in 2003. It looks like the "National Championship" game will not include the best college football team this year just as it didn't include the best college football team last year. Last year the situation was a bit unfortuate because Iowa was clearly a level below Miami and Oklahoma so USC didn't get a chance to beat the second best team in college football. This year the situation is better because Michigan is probably the second best team in college football.

People have complained about the BCS, and to those complainers, this year will be the ultimate comeuppance for the BCS. There will be a National Championship game played, but it will not be in New Orleans on January 4th. It will be in Pasadena on January 1st. It will be in the greatest setting in college football: an open air, grass field stadium nestled between the Santa Anita mountains and the 210 freeway ;) in sunny Southern California.

So bring it on Michigan. Bring your best game and make this a mythical National Championship game to remember. I just hope my New Year's Day plans aren't spoiled by the BCS throwing USC into the Sugar Bowl.

Oklahoma (12-1) and LSU (12-1) will be No.1 and No. 2, respectively, when the final BCS Standings are released today (5:30 ET, ABC). This means the Sooners and Tigers will square off for the national title in the Nokia Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4 in New Orleans.

Edwards' BCS bowl projections
Nokia Sugar Bowl:
LSU vs. Oklahoma

Rose Bowl presented by Citi:
USC vs. Michigan

FedEx Orange Bowl:
Miami vs. Ohio State

Tostitos Fiesta Bowl:
Kansas State vs. Florida State

USC (11-1), which entered the final week of the season as the BCS' No. 2 team and enjoyed a 24-point win over Oregon State on Saturday, will finish third and meet No. 4 Michigan in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. The Trojans are the top-ranked team in both the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll and The Associated Press media poll and could still win AP's national title with a Rose Bowl victory. The coaches' poll is obligated to crown the BCS championship game winner as its national champion.

In the end, USC's schedule strength and computer rankings were not strong enough to hold off the Sooners and Tigers within the BCS formula. USC non-conference opponents Auburn, BYU, Hawaii and Notre Dame, along with conference foes Arizona State and Washington, all failed to live up to preseason expectations, which weakened the Trojans in every element except the minds of the human voters

Dr you are right here we go

Last year is simple

Miami 0 losses headed to their bowl game

Ohio State 0 losses headed to their bowl game

USC 2 losses headed to their bowl game

The two 0 loss teams play & Ohio State wins.

In the end

Ohio State #1 (still say they stole it but whatever :p)

Miami #2 only 1 loss

You get it? USC was not the best team last year, end of story! Last year two teams entered the game undefeated, & the championship was settled on the field. Now if USC was really the best team like some claim most felt then why weren't they given the title by the AP which can give their title to anyone.

I know: Because USC wasn't the best team last year. I could understand the case they were playing the best football at the end of the year but as a whole they weren't the best so stop with that ridiculous claim.

Its just too bad that that OK still gets a shot at the NC. I REALLY wanted to see LSU play USC! Well, USC better get prepared for Michigan, 'cause it aint gonna be a cakewalk! :nono:

LSU will have their hands full as well. Just hope that D can keep holding strong!

So Scott4USC, what happened? I thought you said we could "stick a fork in LSU"? Looks like that weak ooc schedule didn't matter too much, huh? It's a shame that SEC teams have such "weak schedules". How could they possibly have weak scheduled their way right into the national championship game?

Are the two "best teams" playing for the NC? I don't know, probably not. Everybody knows the BCS is screwed up. But we also know how the BCS works and we know what a team needs to do to get to the NC game, and USC didn't play their cards right this year, nor last. Stop crying about it and just play your cards right next time!

On the subject of USC being # 1 in the polls right now - Where would USC be ranked in the human polls if that Cal loss had happened within these last three weeks? I think the polesters have forgotten all about it, but the BCS computers haven't. Computers don't make mistakes, my friend. I hate the BCS, so don't get me wrong. But OK and LSU did exactly what it took to get themselves into the NC game. End of story.

Please give us a playoff, so all this controversy can be put to rest. Its the same old shit every year, only different teams get shafted.

The BCS is a fawcking joke period!! decide it on the field, not in some freaking computer:mad: In years past when a team lost early, they had a chance to come back as long as there wasn't 2 unbeaten teams, now OK loses their conference championship gm and they still get to play for the NC, it's bullshit( and they got waxed to boot).

The system sucks:shrug: :moon: :nono:

Yeah, those gosh darn, lucky, overrated Buckeyes were a fraud last year. No way they deserved the NC last year. Jeez, they only were the first team to ever go 14-0, including beating an 'unbeatable' Miami team on a 30 game win streak who many were comparing to one of the all-time great teams. Their strength of schedule was only #7 or #8 after all was said and done. Lucky bastards.

Hey Nick, it looks like you got your wish, USC gets to stay home. What a shame that is. Maybe if USC gets lucky and beats Michigan, they'll get to split an 'imaginary' title with somebody else. But i'm sure if they lose, we'll get to hear about how they are still the best team in the nation.

Why do the same few retards pollute all of my threads? I'll answer a couple of the sane people who posted here:

kosar, I am starting to get the feeling you are the only sensible native Ohioan (sp?) on this site. Trust me, pal, I won't be saying USC is the best team if they get beaten by Michigan. That would be stupid. Then Michigan would be the best team ;).

Mr Hockey, if all college football teams played the same schedule, then I could accept determining the best team based solely on record. They don't. National Championships have always been given away based mostly on end of season performance. All you have to do is look at USC's last split National Championship in 1978. USC beat Alabama, they finished with the same record, but Alabama was voted into half of the National Championship because writers felt that they were playing better at the end of the year. There is precedence to my claim that USC was the best team last season. As for why they didn't get voted number 1 by the AP, you'd have to ask the voters who mistook record for quality of team.

Nick:

Why Jack puts faith in you to post your ignorant views on sports is beyond me. I do feel bad for you and other USC fans....you got screwed. They should be in that game. Sorry about that. If Ohio State had beaten Michigan we would be in the boat with you.

However....your comment on how USC was the best team in the nation last year is beyond ignorant. How can you back that up? Your team lost not, once but twice! Yea they breezed through a chitty PAC10 schedule. So what? Try going 14-0 and winning a National Championship then maybe you can lay claim to the best team in the nation.

I can tell that by your writing skills that you cannot be as ignorant as your views make you out to be. So please think before you go pecking that keyboard.

The USC football program finally paid the price for the fraud it has perpetrated on the people of this country all year long. USC had no right to play in that championship game given the weak quality of their opponents this season. LSU and Oklahoma busted their butts and played quality teams. Any rational person has to agree that the BCS got it right and proved that the AP writers and head coaches are all imbeciles.

The facts don't lie. USC went 11-1 and played only one team that finished the season in the Top 25 (#14 Washington State). USC's only loss came at the hands of UNRANKED Cal.

LSU and Oklahoma, on the other hand, went 12-1, each playing one additional game than USC. Further, both LSU and Oklahoma lost to RANKED teams, unlike USC. Last, LSU played four games against ranked teams (#11 twice, #17 and #18). Oklahoma played three ranked teams, two of which finished the year in the top 10 (#5, #10).

Given this hard data, I honestly don't know what all the fuss is about.

The facts are the facts. USC only played a single top 25 team all year. LSU played 5 that finished there. Given those circumstances, which team was more likely to lose a single game?
What if I'd added that one team played in the 6th best BCS conference, while the other one played in the best?

This is a no brainer. The BCS did its job this year. The computers did what they were supposed to do, they took the human factor out of the equation and looked at who the more deserving team was.

Bender on the mark, as usual.

The Pac-10 was a HORRID conference this year. Abysmal, terrible, there aren't enough adjectives to describe how weak it was. All USC had to do was beat a mediocre Cal team and they couldn't do that. They are undeniably a very talented team, but playing all the patsies in the Pac-10 week after week made them look better than they are. No chance LSU or Oklahoma loses to Cal. Okie's loss to K-St is a much 'better' loss than USC losing to Cal. LSU losing to Florida is a 'better' loss than USC losing to Cal.

If Alabama played in the Pac-10 this year, good chance they finish second or third. LSU played in, from top to bottom, the toughest conference in the country, and came away with only one loss. They definitely deserve their spot in the BCS title game, along with Oklahoma.
