Mr Hockey- It didn't take much research to see that LSU played the mighty UL Monroe team that sent shivers down the spine of all their opponents. Then they played the Pac 10 doormat Arizona. We also find long-time powerhouse Western Illinois on the LSU schedule. Let's not forget that game against perennial Top 25 team Louisiana Tech. Most of the assumptions about the difficulty of their schedule revolve around the fact that their conference is considered so powerful. In addition, when USC scheduled Auburn and Notre Dame, I believe these two teams in a normal year would be considered just a tad tougher than UL Monroe, Western Illinois and LaTech. And I suppose you agree with the computer that had Miami, Ohio ahead of USC?
The bias against the West Coast teams continues to rear its ugly head. Take the Heisman. No one from the West had won the Heisman since 1982 when Palmer won it last year.Only 3 West Coast players - Elway, Peete, and Faulk were the only ones that came as close as second. There is not one player west of the Rockies nominated this year - funny, when the #1 team in the media and coach's poll plays in LA. As one columnist mentioned, at least Pete Carroll won an award this week. And that must have been an accomplishment going 11-1 when it was Pitt, Michigan, and Oklahoma had all the best players.
Of course, we can end all the arguments by admitting one simple fact. The BCS system is all about making money through the bowl games - it has very little to do with crowning a legitimate national champion. Both Oklahoma and LSU may well be good enough to topple USC - and had USC beaten out either of the above teams for the BSC championship they too would have a good case. I don't see a whole lot of separation between the 3 of them, and perhaps Michigan, too. Bashing USC is fun, but suggesting they are imposters is assinine.
