My wife is going to get me the DVR for christmas, my question to anyone that has it is, do I really need to run another cable from the satellite to the receiver? I want to know if I can do it, or if I have to call someone to do it.

I believe that all types of recorders intended to record from cable or satellite must be first in line after the descrambler box from the outside cable, then the TV is connected afterwards to the out of the recorder. You do not need additional cables from outside your home. A recorder will record from either cable or satellite without even having a TV. You only need the TV to originally program the recorder channels and to view the incoming or recorded signal. I hope this helps answer your question. There are many here at Mad Jacks that have a ton of technical expertise but I'll try to help until they can.

Keep it Positive, Topdog

P.S. Hopefully it will come with instructions!! LOL!!

It's best to get it professionally installed, a standard cable splitter won't do the job, they have a special one they install. When I bought mine the installation was included in the deal, and I think it usually is. I hope your getting the DVR with dual tuners, it makes a world of difference.

If you have any other questions feel free to leave a post and I'll respond if I see it.

So Cal
KMA is right on. When I got mine, installation was part of the deal and 2 tuners are a must.

its not that tough to install yourself. get rg6 cable. tighten it onto your dish. since you have existing cable just try to run it alongside your existing one until it gets to your new receiver. then tighten it to the appropriate input.
you have to have a second line for your dvr receiver to work properly.

it is awesome. recording season passes and the such.

iam a total novice and was able to do it. gl and if you have other questions post again.

Well I got it and a multiswitch, but I might have to reposition my dish b/c it's not getting a consistent signal, it always says searching for signal on Sat 1.

I dont' really have an answer about doing the install, that's why it's best to have it doen by the experts, but if you're getting a feed on sat. 2 signal and not sat. 1 signal, it might not be where the dish is but the multiswitch itself. Make sure you have the feeds right, and cap the ends of the unused ends of the multiswitch too. Good Luck!!!

I think it may be the multiswitch, but I still can't get it to read when I try and do a dual line. I have the line from my dual lnb coming in from the outside going into the top of the multiswitch, then I have two cables from the bottom of the multiswitch going to the Sat 1 and Sat 2 inputs in the back of the receiver. I have tried different cables so I don't think it's the cables. I reset my receiver, and it could not detect the multiswitch, so I don't know if I have it hooked up wrong or if it's the multiswitch. I don't know any other way to hook it up, I have tried all the outputs on the multiswitch.

you must have both lines from the sat going into the multiswitch. it wont loop and you cant split it. run both lines into the multi switch giving you four outputs then try it

Hope this helps

Thanks, toast, yeah I just found that out by emailing the company tech support, now I am going to go down to the Circuit city where I bought it from and punch the fawker who sold me this thing that told me 1) I needed to have the two lines in for it to work, which I don't and 2) for telling me I only needed one input in the multiswitch and wouldn't have to install more cable.

I arued with this guy for 15 minutes telling him I would still need to get this professionally installed even with the multiswitch, he told me I didn't. That's what I get for trusting some temp help at Circuit City :thefinger  :thefinger
