In simple, simple terms, please explain to me what this is. I know it means denial of service, but I also see attack always mentioned. Thanks.

It's not so much about crashing the server as it is about keeping it over occupied. Hacker uses back-door and trojan programs to access other computers. Those computers continuously connect to a site's server until other legitimate users cannot access the site. If anyone remembers trying to get access to CNN.com or MSN.com during 9/11, then you have a feeling for what happens.

A Denial of Service (DoS) attack is a flood of packets that consumes network resources and causes gridlock. This gridlock prevents or denies users access to online resources, which is the origin of the term, "Denial of Service" attack. An attack may originate from a single source (DoS), or remotely from numerous machines (Distributed DoS or DDoS) that have been infiltrated. These pawn-like computers that forward DoS attacks are called "zombies", and are usually distributed geographically.
