Big Al Mcmordie
Game: Michigan St. at Nebraska Dec 29 2003 9:00PM
Prediction: Nebraska
Reason: Nebraska is making its 35 straight post-season appearance, which is an NCAA record. And the Cornhuskers will be coached by Bo Pelini, who is in his 1st season as defensive co-ordinator, after 9 years in the NFL. This game will be Pelini's audition for the head coaching job and, if he doesn't get that position, I wouldn't be surprised if he is hired by Oklahoma to take over for their departing defensive co-ordinator Mike Stoops, who will be Arizona's head coach next season. This Bowl game is a clash of offensive styles. Michigan State loves to pass the ball with QB Jeff Smoker, while Nebraska wants to run, run, run. The Cornhuskers are 9th in the nation in rushing, but only Air Force and Rice threw for less yards. Nebraska also has a very good pass defense, as they allowed just 206 passing yards per game, and 5.4 yards per pass attempt. The Spartans are just 4-12 ATS vs. good passing defenses that allow 5.75 yards or less per pass attempt, and Michigan State is 0-4 straight-up vs. Nebraska, including a 55-14 blowout loss in 1996.

Virginia Tech likes to run the football, while California likes to air it out. Cal (7-6) has a terrific coach in second-year man Jeff Tedford. This offense is wide-open, averaging 31 points and 254 yards passing pg. QB Aaron Rodgers and Reggie Robertson have combined for 26 TDs and only 8 INTs. RB Adimchinobe Echemandu (1,161 yards, 5.2 yards per carry) is the best running back in the country whose name you can?t pronounce, while WR Geoff McArthur caught 85 passes for 1,504 yards. This is the farthest east that Cal will have traveled this season, but they went 3-4 SU on the road outscoring opponents by a 28-25 average. And remember: Cal is the only team to beat No.1 USC this season (34-31 in OT). Virginia Tech (8-4) likes to run the ball behind QB Bryan Randall and RB Kevin Jones. The Hokies average 34 points and 214 yards rushing per game. One has to wonder if they are even interested in playing in a bowl. V-Tech has lost 3 of 4 games, which all happened after their thrilling 31-7 rout of Miami. They lost to Boston College and Virginia and beat Temple 24-23 as a 25-point favorite! After missing out on the postseason a year ago, California takes advantage of an overrated Hokie squad.
THE DOG WINS
While Urban Meyer left for Utah, Gegg Brandon took over at BG and led the Falcons to a 10-3 season! The Falcons lost only to Miami-Ohio (twice) and in Columbus to Ohio St 24-17 (as 12.5-point dogs). Over the last three seasons, BG has been the ENVY of every mid-major school, as the Falcons are 6-1 SU and 7-0 ATS vs BCS schools! Northwestern finished just 6-6 with FIVE of its losses coming by 20 points or more. While BG features Josh Harris at QB (4th in the nation in total offense while throwing for 3427 yards with 24 TDs & 10 INTs and 762 yards rushing and 12 TDs!), NW has Brett Basanez (54% / 1858 passing yards / 4 TDs-12 INTs). NW has been 'crushed' in its three bowl appearances since 1995 (combined score of 155-77) while BG makes jits first bowl appearance since 1992. The Falcons were 'worried' that they would lose out to Northern Illinois for this bowl bid after their poor performance in the MAC Title game vs Miami and won't miss an opportunity to win again vs a BCS opponent! BG's ofensive balance (204.6 ypg rush / 293.8 ypg pass) is too much for NW (27 of the team's 31 offensive TDs came via the run!) and with the pointspread 'dropping', win and cover rather EASILY! 10* Bowling Green.

Virginia Tech backed into this Bowl game after ending their season on a 2-4 SU run, including a 21-35 loss to Virginia in the final game. That road loss capped a season where Virginia Tech was 0-5 ATS on the road and moved them to 1-5 ATS as favorites following a SU loss. They find both key angles coming into play once again on Friday in the Insight Bowl. California ended the season with a very strong 4-1 SU mark to end their season and we find them at 12-3 ATS as dogs with rest. While Virginia Tech has been known for their defense speed in the past, this California squad actually has a speed advantage, which they showed as they defeated such speed-orientated Pac 10 squads such as USC and managed 28 points against the tough Kansas State defense which help # 1 ranked Oklahoma to just a Touchdown! Take the points with these hungry Bears!
