Game: Michigan St. at Nebraska Dec 29 2003 9:00PM
Prediction: Nebraska
Reason: Nebraska is making its 35 straight post-season appearance, which is an NCAA record. And the Cornhuskers will be coached by Bo Pelini, who is in his 1st season as defensive co-ordinator, after 9 years in the NFL. This game will be Pelini's audition for the head coaching job and, if he doesn't get that position, I wouldn't be surprised if he is hired by Oklahoma to take over for their departing defensive co-ordinator Mike Stoops, who will be Arizona's head coach next season. This Bowl game is a clash of offensive styles. Michigan State loves to pass the ball with QB Jeff Smoker, while Nebraska wants to run, run, run. The Cornhuskers are 9th in the nation in rushing, but only Air Force and Rice threw for less yards. Nebraska also has a very good pass defense, as they allowed just 206 passing yards per game, and 5.4 yards per pass attempt. The Spartans are just 4-12 ATS vs. good passing defenses that allow 5.75 yards or less per pass attempt, and Michigan State is 0-4 straight-up vs. Nebraska, including a 55-14 blowout loss in 1996.
